South Fayette senior Sam Bishop tied for seventh place in the WPIAL Class 3A Golf Championships and advanced to the state tournament. Bishop tied with his teammate, Brady Newman, who also advanced.

BUTLER – Two South Fayette golfers, Brady Newman and Sam Bishop, qualified for the state tournament by placing among the top-14 finishers in the two-round WPIAL Class 3A Championships on Monday at Butler Country Club.

Newman and Bishop, both seniors, tied for seventh place at 5-over par for the two rounds.

Carson Kittsley of Fox Chapel won the WPIAL championship by shooting 8-under 134 for the two rounds. He defeated runner-up Jack Scariponte of Latrobe by six strokes. They were the only golfers under par over the two rounds.

The WPIAL tournament began last Monday at Willowbrook Country Club in Apollo. Newman shot 74 in the opening round and he was 3-over 73 in the second round. Bishop shot 76 in the opening round and played the Butler course at 1-over 71.

Belle Vernon’s Jack Edwards entered the final round in a tie for fifth place but the second round was not kind to him. The Leopards senior shot 86 and finished in 27th place.

Trinity’s Ryan Walther shot 79 in the second round and finished in a tie for 20th place, only four strokes away from advancing. His teammate, Lucas Daniels, carded a round of 84 and tied for 30th place.

Peters Township’s Camden Reyes and South Fayette’s Jackson Stephens tied for 25th place at 15-over for the tournament.

The Class 2A boys tournament concludes today at Valley Brook Country Club, and the Class 3A and 2A girls championships will be held Wednesday at Sewickley Heights Golf Club.

The PIAA Championships are scheduled for Oct. 20-22 at the Penn State Golf Courses in State College.
