Hey everyone, Steph Ferguson here from Experience Golf at Common Ground, home of the Colorado Golf Association and want to chat with you a little bit today about grip positioning and how it can affect your ball flight. So, one of the things we always check when clients come in is where their grip is on the club because your grip is essentially your steering wheel. So, where you position your hands is going to dictate how the ball flies quite a bit. When we talk about grip position, a lot of times you’re going to hear strong and weak grip used. And it’s less about the pressure of the actual grip and more about the position of the hand. So when we talk about a stronger grip, that would be if your target side hand, your lead hand was rotated on top of the grip quite a bit. So you could see a lot of the back of this target side hand. And if that trail hand kind of matched and was sitting underneath, that would be considered a strong grip. So as you swing through, what that grip is actually going to do is it’s going to tend to close the club face. So if you hit a big draw or a hook, this might be a grip that you have. Right now, if you are someone that hits a slice, a lot of times what we’ll see is that target side hand gets underneath the club like this. You can kind of see more of my palm here and then my trail hand would get more on top of the grip. So the opposite would happen is as I swing through my my body is going to neutralize as I swing through. That club face would be more open. So that would tend to create more of a a left to right ball flight for a lot of people um for right-handed golfers I should say. So, if we talked about a more neutral grip, when we look down our target side hand, we want to see about the top two knuckles or there’s a V created by your index finger and your thumb. That should point towards your trail shoulder. And then if your trail hand matches, there’s that same kind of V here. That should also point towards your trail shoulder. So, there’s no perfect answer for what grip is right, but depending on what type of ball flight you want, you can play around with grip a little bit to to help to influence the shape of the shots. So, give that a try if you have a more extreme ball flight or you want to see a different ball flight. Let us know if you have any questions.
