EXETER — Ben Boyanoski of Scranton Prep won a playoff with two other golfers to capture the District 2 Class 2A boys title Monday afternoon at Fox Hill Country Club.

Meanwhile, Dallas’ Ryan Roman had the day’s best round with an even-par 71 to claim the Class 3A boys title by four shots, and Holy Redeemer’s Arden Brunn won the girls Class 2A crown.

Boyanoski, teammate Guy Rothery and Holy Redeemer freshman Liam Gill each shot 1-over-par 72s to tie for first and create the playoff. Playing the par-4 No. 1, Boyanoski parred the hole while Rothery and Gill each had double bogeys.

“I saw both my opponents missed the green, so my whole goal was to give myself a putt at it,” Boyanoski said. “I had 105 (yards), which one of my favorite numbers with a wedge. It was tracking at the stick, then kicked right. I was happy just to have a putt at it. Then both of my opponents had putts for bogeys, so I knew two-putt sealed it. I didn’t want to get too aggressive, but I didn’t want to leave myself a tester. I was just happy to two-putt.

“This feels great. I’ve been chasing it for the past four years. To finally get it done feels amazing.”

During regulation, Boyanoski recovered from a 39 on the front nine to shoot 33 on the back.

“I had two bookend bogeys on 1 and 2 and 8 and 9,” Boyanoski said. “I really had no momentum. Made no putts, had a few lipouts, a few mental errors. But I knew the back nine was scoreable with two par-5s. I was able to get two key par saves on 10 and 11 and I hit the stick on my eagle chip on 12 for a birdie off that. I got up-and-down from the right-side bunker on 13, which was huge because I was sitting at 2-over and heard the leader was even or 1-under. I needed to make par to keep momentum. I was able to two-putt birdie on 14 on the par five. Birdied 15, then missed a few looks on 16, 17 and 18, but I knew anything could happen with those closing holes.”

Gill had a 35 on the front and 37 on the back, while Rothery had matching 36s on the front and back nines.

“I played pretty solid all day,” Gill said. “Didn’t make a lot of birdie putts, but made a lot of par putts. A double bogey on 13 hurt me, but I came back and parred out. I made a 30-footer on 17 to make it into the playoff.

“I think nerves got to me (in the playoff) as a freshman. My hand slipped on my drive and I just put myself in a (bad) situation. But I’m happy to be the first boy to make it to states as a freshman from Redeemer.”

Rothery flew the green on his second shot in the playoff, then had two tough chips out of the rough.

“I hit a great drive. Was in the first cut on the left side,” Rothery said. “Had 141 in and hit a 9-iron, but I caught a flyer out and it flew the green. I hit the right number, but it just pulled a little right. The right rough was matted down, so my club just stuck in as soon as I tried to hit it. Didn’t make up-and-down and I doubled.

“At the end of the day, though, (making states) is what matters most.”

Those three qualify for the PIAA Individual Championships at the Penn State University Golf Courses on Oct. 21-22 along with Aiden August from Wyoming Area and Scranton Prep’s Cole Powell and Jack Pavuk. August finished fourth with a 2-over 73. Powell also shot 73, while Pavuk finished with 76.

Roman was four shots better than Brady Gerrity from Wilkes-Barre Area and Ryan Boyd of Abington Heights. Patrick Ruane of Pittston Area was fourth with a 76 and Seamus Kelly of Abington Heights placed fifth with a 77. Those five qualified for the state championships.

“I started off with a couple of dumb bogeys,” said Roman, who started his round on hole No. 1 and shot 34 on the front nine and 37 on the back. “But the biggest turnaround point was on hole 5. Not a good first putt, but made the second one for par from about 15 feet. That was crucial for the next hole. Two good shots on the par-5 and chipped in actually on hole 6 for eagle, so I was back at even. Good shot, good par on hole 7. Hole 8, good birdie. Usually I don’t play good on the front nine, so being at 1-under was a good reassurance.

“The key was just consistency, no big numbers and we got the job done.”

Boyd started his round on No. 15. He finished with a 38 on the front nine and 37 on the back to wind up third in Class 3A.

“A lot of bad iron shots, good wedge shots and making putts. That’s what it was,” Boyd said. “I had to drill an 18-footer on hole 12 to save par. That was a big one.”

Brunn shot 78. Madison Walker from Tunkhannock was second with 86 and Montrose’s Ally Legg third with 96. They qualify for the state championships at Penn State.

“I didn’t start off the best way, but I pushed through,” said Brunn, who shot identical 39s on the front and back nines. “I made birdie on 12 and that really kept me going, kept me motivated.”

Legg stood looking at the scoreboards with tears of joy in her eyes as her third-place effort earned her a trip to states.

“Oh my gosh, this literally means everything to me,” Legg said. “It’s been my dream for years. I’m absolutely so excited. It’s such an honor.

“I definitely struggled a little bit. The greens were really fast. But overall, I hit my irons really well, I hit my tee shots really well. There were a couple of par-4s that I had some really nice pars. Everything just felt right.”

The girls Class 3A was a subregional with District 4. Kylie Schall from Jersey Shore was the subregional champ with an 86. Brianna Moffatt from Abington Heights was second with an 88 and Lyla Jones of North Pocono took third with an 89. Those three qualified for the state tournament.

Moffatt was the District 2 champion and Jones was runner-up. Madison Matteo of Hazleton Area shot 90 to finish third in the district.

“I had two birdies, on hole 2 and hole 13, and those definitely saved me after I had a few rough holes,” said Moffatt, who had 42 on the front nine and 46 on the back. “It definitely was a roller-coaster, I was close to tears for a few (holes). But I was able to pull it together and come back. I’m so happy.”

Jones started on No. 8 and finished with a 44 on the front nine and 45 on the back to earn her third straight trip to states.

“My first tee shot of the day did not hit good, but after that all of my tee shots were very well,” Jones said. “I just couldn’t put a hole together today. When I was done, I was upset because I thought I didn’t make it. But when I found out I made it, I was crying. I’m very happy.”
