Diman takes on Bristol-Plymouth in a Mayflower Large golf match.
The Diman golf team traveled to Bridgewater to take on Bristol-Plymouth. The Bengals won, 9-0.
For Bob Leach and the Diman golf team, the time is now.
The Bengals senior captain got a taste of winning a league championship in the spring for the baseball team. Now he would like to duplicate the feat in the fall.
“I think we have a great team honestly,” Leach said. “We have a lot of depth and a lot of young guys who are very good in golf with a lot of great potential for the future. It’s been my best record in high school.”
On a dreary and wet Wednesday afternoon match at Olde Scotland Links in Bridgewater, Diman came away with a 9-0 victory against a youthful Bristol-Plymouth team to improve to 7-1-2. It’s the Bengals best record since going unbeaten in league play in 2019 when they won the league championship.

Fourth-year head coach Bob Berlo joked around and said that league titles comes around for the high school in increments of six years. Besides winning in 2019, Diman also won the league title in 2013.
“I’m happy, I like this team,” said Berlo, who is an instructor for graphic design and visual communication at Diman. “I’m really lucky to do this. We’ve improved by 30 strokes from a week ago so I’m happy about that. We have a couple of tournaments coming up which is a big part of our season.”
Most of Berlo’s starters have a vast amount of experience when it comes to golf.
Leach has been on courses for nearly 10 years. He first started his journey at Fall River Country Club. Sophomore Gavin Pimental hits the slopes of Allendale Country Club some 8 to 10 years ago. Senior Wyatt Messier first sharpened his skills at the Swansea Club Club. Junior Jacob Cabral started as an eighth grader at the Touisset Country Club.
“We had some ups and downs,” Messier said. “The Cape Cod Tech match, we lost that one which was our downer and had two ties too. But mostly the season has been up. Hopefully, we can keep going up from there and keep winning.”
There is also Matt Fredrick, Ryan Souza, Jordan Viveiros and Van Wilson, who have had great rounds for the Bengals.
Cabral said the team is peaking at the right time.
“I think the team has been good this year,” he said. “The best I’ve played on. A lot of young kids which will be good for next year.”
Pimental added, “The whole team is playing well. It feels like it is all coming together.”
With four freshman back from last season’s team, the future looks bright for the Diman golf team. But first thing is first, avenging their only loss against the Crusaders on Monday.
“We’ll see what happens,” Berlo said. “You never know. I’m hoping everyone on the team goes out and plays really well.”
