I got roasted doing one of these videos but had to do it for Ron! I talk about pitching from firm group and muddy lies in this video. I hope you enjoy!

Hey guys, Mr. Short hitter here. Like a short hitter to me. I’ve kind of shied away from doing these types of videos, but Ron Chapel wanted some ideas on how to hit pitch shots from firm ground. A long time ago, I made a video about a bunker shot and bunker technique that actually works and I just got roasted in the comment section. So like why make videos to get roasted to get the same amount of views? But Ron is a longtime subscriber. So Ron, I am doing this video for you and I hope some of you other guys get something out of it. But this is just the way I play the shot. So feel free to play it however you like. This course is in such good condition, it’s hard to find any spots where it’s even any bare ground. But there is some irrigation work that has just been completed. So due to that, we have some dead ground here where the irrigation was done. One thing I kind of shy away from now is hitting this like a let’s say a standard chip shot to where we get more weight on our left side and we start leaning here. And what that does is kind of promotes coming down more steep into the ball. And I think steepness is the actual enemy of this shot, coming down steep, because now you’re coming down, you got your weight forward, you have a tendency to get your low point out in front of the ball. And if that happens, well, now your low point’s in front of the ball. You’re coming down. You got super hard ground. You can actually hit down and thin this golf ball and it goes way over the green, which I think is what was happening to Ron. or if you kind of flip, you can actually come behind it and bounce into it. So, we don’t want to come steep into this shot. So, what I like to do is keep my weight just maybe slightly on my left side. So, about 60% left. And now, that’s going to stop me from really coming down as steep. and it’s not going to have that low point as far in front of the golf ball. And the ball is placed a little bit forward of center. Now, the third thing, and probably the most important when it’s firm ground like this, and it’s a little different if it’s kind of more muddy to where you have a little bit of leeway under the ball, I play that shot different. But here, if it’s super firm now, I just don’t want to get steep and I don’t want to get deep. We don’t want to be steep. We don’t want to be deep. So now I want to form more of a circular motion through the golf ball. So I’m coming here around my body and I’m just kind of grazing the top of the ground. We don’t want to come hitting down like this. We want to be around our body. So we have our point, low point closer to the golf ball and we’re coming shallow. And we’re around our body really shallow in a round circular motion. One came up popped up high with no spin there, but we definitely didn’t thin it. All right, guys. We’ve got a 360 yard par4. Hey, Mr. Short hitter. What kind of ball are you using? Oh, that’s a Callaway chrome saw. Got it from Golf Ball Planet. Golfball Planet? What’s that? Golf Ball Planet has been the number one supplier of used golf balls since 1997. Are they expensive? Matter of fact, they’re not expensive at all. And you can save 18% by using my code, MSH18. Are you going to hit the ball or what? Okay, Ron, now I have a bonus for you. Now, we see water here. This is not as firm. This is muddy. Now, if I’m facing this shot, I have a little bit of give. Now, this ground is going to give a little bit. It’s not going to bounce as much into this ball. So, we can skid pretty easily off of this mud. So, I’m going to play this shot very, very similar to the other shot. I’ll play a little forward in my stand still. But now, this time, I know I have leeway behind the ball. The one thing that we can do wrong here is hit into the ball. So, we actually have more margin for error. So, I’m going to make sure to utilize the bounce a little bit. I will open the face just a tad. And if anything, I’m just gonna make sure I hit a tad behind this golf ball. So now the bounce is going to help me. I’m not going to get very steep the same just like the other shot, but we can open the face just a tad. Play it up. And now I have more margin for error. Just make sure I hit a little bit behind this golf ball. The only thing I could do wrong is hit this golf ball thin and hit the ball first coming down. So, let’s just give ourselves a little error. Hit behind it just a tad or right on the back of it. And I actually hit half an inch behind that golf ball. You know, not shots that are great, but these are shots from this lie. I’m gonna give myself a chance to get up and down. Well, Ron, I hope these tips help you around the greens when you have either hard pan or muddy lies. And make sure to leave down in the comment section the ideas you guys have for videos. And again, I don’t want to make too many like this because these are the videos that bring on the most hate, but I’m just telling you guys how I play the shot. And it’s up to you on whether you try it or not and whether it works for you or not. So, if you enjoyed the video, like, comment, subscribe. Until next time, Mr. Shore hitter out. Just play 13.

  1. Awesome, awesome! Thank you so much for doing this. Here it seems like so often we get a hard-pan lie near the green and – with my wedge play – I'm so often at a loss of how to hit it. I hope you don't catch ANY heat for doing this. Lately my short game has been getting better largely by having better grass and I've started laying the face open and getting decent at lofting it and stopping it. In fact, with a 17 handicap I scored my lifetime first sub-80 yesterday at 71 years old with a 79 (and a mulligan each side). You're one of the guys that have helped me get better. Again, thanks for posting this – I appreciate it!

  2. I post things on youtube but don't look at the comments because i have learned that no matter what i say someone is going to disagree with it regardless. True story. If i say red, they say blue. Can't fight it. I don't really know the mental state or intelligence level of the other people behind a computer so why assume that their intelligence is equal to mine?
Moreover, you know Mistah that what works for one person might not work for u in golf, at the end the one that wins is the one who scores better right? Do you, and expect people to disagree bro.
By the way, the video about the golf electric push cart was cool. When i get back to the states i'll buy myself one of those electric push carts cause the manual ones get hard to push over time. Peace!

  3. This is great. I actually asked you for the same advise a couple weeks ago. There are lots of tight lies all over the courses I’ve played with the drought like conditions in late summer

  4. These are a booger of a shot for me. Going about two and a half months here in Central kentucky with almost no rain in my area (until the past 3-4 days), we have these bare, hard dirt tight lies everywhere on my home course. Middle of the fairway, 100 yards out from green, all around the green, all over the place. Fairways here usually take drought pretty good (bermuda fairways) but not this year. Anyway, on shots around the green on these hard dirt lies, I waver between a 56 degree with probably 12 degrees of bounce, or a 52 degree with very little bounce. I've still not done very well with either, but I kind of take the opposite approach from what you're showing here, getting steep, trying to make sure I get more on top of the ball so I don't hit it with the leading edge and thin it. I might try your technique here, can't hurt, that's for sure.
