President Trump visited the Ryder Cup at Bethpage. @T-Mobile
The US team had a 13th man at the Ryder Cup on Friday. It was the 45th and 47th president of the United States, Donald Trump. Whatever your politics, it was hard to deny that the president’s presence in a viewing pen behind the 18th green brought a shot of energy to the already charged proceedings. When the president attended the US Open tennis edition about 30 miles from here earlier this month, he was roundly booed. Today though, he heard more roars than jeers. Just before the afternoon wave of matches began, Captain Keegan Bradley spotted the president behind the first tea. He pointed, he fist pumped. The president responded in kind. Soon after, Bryson Dashambo emerged from the first tea tunnel where the president was waiting to greet him. The Shambo and Trump walked to the tea together as if the president was the Shambo’s fourball partner and not Ben Griffin. Shambo wheeled back and nearly drove the green. The president applauded. The crowd roared. Still, whatever morale boost the president provided, it could only go so far. At day’s end, the Americans were in a deep hole. And not even an executive order could fix that. [Applause]
