BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s golf team is competing in the three-round MIAC Championship this weekend at the Edinburgh Golf Course. The Gusties shot +13 as a team to tie Bethel University for second place out of the conference field of nine teams after round one, finishing just one stroke behind Concordia College who leads the field at +12.

“We had an awesome start today, which is exactly what we were looking for,” said Gustavus head coach Scott Moe. “There were a couple holes midway through that front nine that gave us a little bit of trouble where we need to clean up a couple things tomorrow. We didn’t quite score as well on a par five as we were hoping, but it wasn’t too bad. When we face the tricky hole locations, we just need to be making sure we are putting ourselves in a good spot on our approaches. We talked about not trying to win it on day one but put ourselves in a really good position, which we did. It’s nice having two guys sitting at first and second after day one, and I know all of us will be ready for a good day tomorrow.”

Wyatt Carlson and Chris Gutuza lead the field of 45 golfers after round one in first and second place respectively. Carlson was the only golfer to break par on Saturday, shooting -1 to lead not only the Gusties but the entire MIAC field. Gutuza followed at +1, tying him with Ryan Engel of Concordia for the second-best score on the day.

Blake Forrest and Sam LaFrenz had the third and fourth counted scores for Gustavus in round one. Forrest shot +6 to tie for 24th overall and LaFrenze finished +8 to tie for 29th.

Up next for the Gusties is round two of the MIAC Men’s Golf Championship on Sunday, September 28. The first tee time for Gustavus is 11:57 a.m. and the final group starts on the course at 12:33 p.m.
