Rory McIlroy had some strong words for the fans at Bethpage Black during Day 2 of the 2025 Ryder Cup.
On Saturday morning, McIlroy was once again paired up with Tommy Fleetwood for a Ryder Cup foursome session. They picked up a comfortable 3-and-2 win over the American duo of Collin Morikawa and Harris English. However, they were challenged on the back nine.

While getting ready for his second shot on the 16th hole, McIlroy told a fan to “shut the f— up” before setting up Fleetwood for a great look at birdie. It was an intense moment that grabbed everyone’s attention.

There are plenty of fans who called McIlroy classy for his comments on Saturday. Social media influencer Paige Spiranac, however, had a much different take on this fiery exchange.
Spiranac said golfers should be allowed to “show sass” in a hostile environment like Bethpage Black.

“Hot take for golf but I like when the golfers show some sass in competitive settings like this,” Spiranac wrote on X. “The crowd is saying whatever they want to them so the players can banter back if they want.”
McIlroy was asked about this Saturday’s incident following his foursome win.
“I don’t mind them having a go at us. Like, that’s to be expected. I mean, that’s what an away Ryder Cup is,” McIlroy said, via ESPN. “Whenever they are still doing it while you are over the ball and trying to hit your shot, that’s the tough thing.”

On Friday afternoon, McIlroy flipped off a fan at Bethpage Black. Less than 24 hours later, he told someone to shut up.
We can’t wait to see what happens during this Saturday’s four-ball session.
