Collin Morikawa and Harris English have not had the best luck during the Ryder Cup. Their two losses so far do not weigh as heavily as the fact that they were the worst possible combination on Team USA, according to projections.
Well-known golf influencer Paige Spiranac was among those who reacted to Morikawa and English’s defeat on Saturday morning. Spiranac, who has been somewhat distant from X lately, shared her opinion with her more than 1 million followers on that platform.
“I don’t understand how nobody on team USA spoke up and said yeah maybe the Morikawa/English pairing just isn’t it,” she posted.
According to Data Golf, English and Morikawa were the worst pairing Keegan Bradley could have chosen for the foursomes out of 132 possible combinations. Even so, the Team USA captain paired them up not once, but twice.
The result was completely unfavorable. Morikawa and English lost Friday morning’s match against Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood 5&4 in just 14 holes. The Americans were able to win only one hole, while the Europeans won six.
A day later, Morikawa and English faced McIlroy and Fleetwood again with similar results. This time, the Europeans needed only 16 holes to take the point 3&2. Six holes went to the so-called “Fleetwood Mac” duo, compared to only three for the Americans.
Morikawa and English were sidelined for the four-ball sessions, leaving both players winless at 0–2 heading into Sunday. Their only remaining chance to avoid a shutout comes in the singles matches.
It’s fair to say that this hasn’t been the only duo that hasn’t worked for the American team. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler played twice in foursomes, teaming up with Russell Henley, and they lost both times, first against Matt Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Aberg, and then against Robert MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland.
Even worse, Scheffler has lost each of his first three matches in the event, as he was also defeated in four-ball play on Friday afternoon, teaming up with JJ Spaun. For Saturday’s session, he was paired with Bryson DeChambeau, who has won only one point in the first three matches.
