Saturday morning Foursomes are now complete, with Europe again showing their mastery of the Foursomes format and going 3-1 to bring their lead to 8.5-3.5 over the United States. There’s still another session to go on Saturday, however, with four more crucial points up for grabs.
Here are the Saturday afternoon Four-Ball pairings slated to match up (with estimated tee times):
Match 1 (12:25 p.m. ET)
Justin Thomas & Cameron Young (USA) vs. Rory McIlroy & Shane Lowry (EUR)
Young may be making his Ryder Cup debut but the local hero has turned himself into Keegan Bradley’s go-to guy in just two sessions. He teams up again with Thomas after yesterday’s thumping 6&5 win over Ludvig Åberg and Rasmus Højgaard and brings in momentum after also winning in the morning foursomes. The victory for Thomas on Friday afternoon was his first in four-balls since 2018 and his first without Jordan Spieth. McIlroy and Lowry are another returning team after securing a dramatic half in the fading sunlight against Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay on Friday. Their only previous appearance together in the four-balls ended in defeat and their combined record playing their own ball with a partner is 6-7-4.
Match 2 (12:41 p.m. ET)
Scottie Scheffler & Bryson DeChambeau (USA) vs. Tommy Fleetwood & Justin Rose (EUR)
Bradley has put arguably his two biggest stars out together in match two, a tactic that has tended to bring more famine than feast in Ryder Cup history. But, while both in very different stages of their careers, they won 1½ points together at Whistling Straits, including a victory over Fleetwood. DeChambeau will bring some confidence from his win in the morning foursomes, while Scheffler does not have a full point since Whistling Straits, although yesterday’s four-balls loss was his first in the format. DeChambeau faces Fleetwood and Rose for the second day in a row having gone down by a hole alongside Ben Griffin on Friday and Fleetwood is 3-0-0 this Ryder Cup, 3-2-1 in four-balls and 9-2-1 when playing with a partner. Fleetwood is the fourth player with whom Rose has won a four-ball match in his 6-4-1 record.
Match 3 (12:57 p.m. ET)
Xander Schauffele & JJ Spaun (USA) vs. Jon Rahm & Sepp Straka (EUR)
A new partnership for the hosts in match three as rookie Spaun seeks a first Ryder Cup point alongside Schauffele after yesterday’s defeat with Scheffler. Schauffele has a win and loss this week alongside Patrick Cantlay in the foursomes and the same record across his career in four-balls, with a victory at Whistling Straits and a loss at Marco Simone. He faces Rahm again after this morning’s loss. Rahm and Straka come together again after yesterday’s win and the Spaniard comes in with a 3-0-0 record so far this week. The two-time Major champion’s record now stands at 2-2-2 and he is undefeated in four matches since 2018. Straka’s Friday win was his four-ball debut.
Match 4 (1:13 p.m. ET)
Sam Burns & Patrick Cantlay (USA) vs. Viktor Hovland & Matt Fitzpatrick (EUR)
Burns and Cantlay come together in the four-ball anchor match for the second day in a row after yesterday’s late drama against McIlroy and Lowry. Cantlay is set to play all five sessions and is 1-1-1 so far while Burns has sat out both foursomes sessions. Cantlay has faced both Europeans in four-balls before, sealing a tie against Hovland in 2021 and win against Fitzpatrick two years ago, while Burns took down Hovland in the four-balls at Marco Simone. The bottom match sees Europe’s only new pairing after both players sat out the four-balls on day one. They each have a win and a loss so far this week but a combined four-ball record that leaves something to be desired at 1-3-2.
In the Four-Ball matches, each member of a two-man team plays his own ball, so four balls are in play on every hole. Each team counts the lowest of its two scores on each hole, and the team whose player has the lowest score wins the hole. If the low scores are tied, the hole is halved.
To understand how the captains select their pairings for these formats, we put together a selection primer to help.
