2025 Ryder Cup Super Preview: Course breakdown, Predictions, & Picks to Win

But you can always count on Sundays with the NFL on CBS and Paramount Plus. Ryder Cup week is here, folks. Bethpage black hosting for the first time, but no stranger to hosting major events in its history. The Americans will be looking for revenge after getting dominated by the Europeans in Rome back in 2023. If you need a refresher, we’ve got it for you here on HQ. Ryder Cup basics look like this 28 total matches, eight foursomes, eight fourball, 12 singles. Each match is worth one point, and the first team to 14.5 will win the Ryder Cup. So if we end up with a 1414 tie, the Europeans retain the title. I’m Tommy Tran with Michael Breed and Patrick McDonald getting us ready for the 45th edition of the Ryder Cup taking place in Farmingdale, New York. Patrick, I’m going to give you first word. I just laid it out. Bethpage black, the black course. No stranger to major level events, although what they’re doing now is a little bit different. What differences and similarities can we expect both there and viewing it on TV? I think it will play a little bit easier than what we saw at the 2019 PGA Championship. And of course, those US opens won by Tiger in Lucas Glover. By all accounts the rough is going to be trimmed down. That’s a strategy the Americans tend to use when they host the Ryder Cup. Given that their their ability to go up to the course and kind of set it up how they want to. But a lot of the clubs are going to be the same, right? This is a beast of a golf course. It’s going to be a par 70, going to be long, a lot of mid irons, a lot of long irons as well. And I think the cool part about the Ryder Cup in general taking the Bethpage Black is the added strategy from both of those teams, especially in foursomes. If you are a better iron player and you’re teeing off on those odd holes, you’re going to be privileged with the approach shots into really a lot of those high leverage holes early in the round and late in the round, you’ll be able to hit approach shots into number two, number three and number four, as well as number 16, 17 and 18. So that added layer of strategy in addition to a major championship venue, a big ballpark where big drivers and great ball strikers are going to thrive is what makes the People’s Country Club so intriguing. Leading up to this Ryder Cup. Yeah, I’m going to go in a slightly different direction than Patrick, though. You know, my instinct to say, don’t do this because the guy is smart, as you know what? But here’s what I can tell you. The golf course looks really big on a scorecard. But the beauty of this event is, is that the captain, Captain Keegan Bradley, can do with it whatever he wants. And if you go back and you read Cracking the Code by by Paul Azinger, what he talked about was the ability to take a golf course and do with it whatever he wanted to do. The whole mindset was to try to create opportunities for birdies. When you start making birdies on the US side and you get that US crowd behind the American team, all of a sudden momentum, energy, emotion, it all starts to play in there. And so I don’t think that they’re going to play the golf course as big as the golf course lays out. I think they’re going to nudge the tees forward a little bit. I think what you’re going to see is that these players are going to going to hit tee shots wherever fairway or not, and they’re going to have opportunities to make birdies because they have lofted clubs in their hands. And when that starts to happen, even if the American squad I’m sorry, even if the European squad makes birdies, the Americans can counter. And when the Americans make birdies, whether it’s to win a hole or to tie a hole, the energy level starts to get on the side of the US. And so I think what Keegan is going to do in his his opportunities to to get the take advantage of the home field advantage, I think he’s going to play the golf course a little bit shorter than what it says on the card. So if we pick up on that and continue the conversation, Michael, I’m going to give you first word, Hazeltine in 16. We’re talking about Whistling Straits a few years later. And then now Bethpage Black the New York northeast crowd. What are we anticipating here this week. Well, all I can tell you is this if you go back to PGA Championship at Bethpage and you remember the the the fans there were counting the number of waggles that, that Sergio Garcia had there. I think this is going to be maybe not quite chaos, but as close as you could get to chaos without it being chaos. I think it’s going to be the energy is going to be phenomenal. I was talking to another individual earlier this week. I think that this is going to be a tournament if you want to call it a tournament, an event certainly where the, the, the supporting crowd is going to be a 13th, 14th and 15th member of this Ryder Cup team. And if they can get if the US can get off to the start that they want, where they’re making a lot of birdies and they’re seeing some some red, white and blue on the board, it could get really ugly really early. I’m expecting thousands of Michael breeds out there lining the ropes at Bethpage Black just right in the European ears. I mean, these guys are using virtual reality headsets to mimic what might be said to them in between the ropes, walking from one hole to the next. And I think the thing about the Europeans kind of pseudo to that Sergio Garcia situation at Bethpage Black many moons ago, they tend to have very sensitive ears where they hear a lot of what is said outside. Remember Bobby Mac in Baltimore at the BMW Championship, giving it out to the crowd when he was playing alongside Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Shane Lowry? They’re not remiss from being able to hear everything that goes outside the ropes. But to Michael’s point, I think this crowd is going to be a huge factor for the US if they get off to a fast start, because I know New York fans are restless, I know they are impatient, and if it goes sour early, Europe has an opportunity to really silence that. Maybe some boos, maybe some impatience from outside the ropes. So I think it’s almost a swinging sword and potentially one that’s double edged. Let’s get some team outlooks. I’m going to make each of you guys a captain. So Michael, you’re going to be Luke Donald. You’re going to be Team Europe. So Patrick that means you get to be Keegan Bradley and Team USA Scottie Scheffler is there. The best golfers are certainly there. The chemistry is the big question mark. How does it all play out. How does it fit for you? I will be playing Scottie Scheffler all 12 sessions. If there were 12 sessions right I’m putting that guy out there as early as possible. I have him hitting the first tee shot. I know a lot of people want to see Bryson or JT potentially really ignite this crowd, but I’m putting our leader out there. I’m putting the guy who is by far the number one player in the world out there. I’m pairing him with Russell Henley, Mr. Reliable, and I think that’s a very formidable foursomes grouping, and I’m playing him as much as Scottie Scheffler wants to play. And then I think there are some question marks with who is going to be that second guy. Pairing Bryson DeChambeau is something that could potentially be very difficult for Keegan Bradley, based off equipment, based off personality based on game. But we know the Bethpage Black crowd is going to love cheering for Bryson DeChambeau. And so I’d put him out in foursomes as well. And I know how crucial it is to win that opening session. Michael brought up the crowd and how US really needs to have it behind them, wind in their sails and by winning the opening session, you certainly have that chance. US went six and 2 in 4 sons in 2021. In route to that record setting win, Europe went seven and one in foursomes in route to that win in Rome as well. You got to win the opening foursomes session. So I’m putting my eight best players out there and hoping for the best. Yeah, I’m going to go in a different direction because I’m Luke Donald and I’ve done this before. I know what it looks like and I know exactly how to play the game. So here are the cards. And they look like this. You’re going to have a guy named Jon Rahm. He’s going to play with Tyrrell Hatton. They play really well together. They’ve got great records. So I’m going to put those guys out. I’m also going to have McIlroy and Fleetwood. They’ve had great success, so I’m going to put those guys out. And then of course, you know as a as a sneaky one. Hovland and Oberg, he put them together a couple of years ago and that worked out nicely. And he’s got a couple of players on the bench that he can he can tap on the shoulders. So he has a winning formula and he’s going to stick to that formula. And that could be a great thing for him. At the same time, it could be very good for Keegan Bradley because he all of a sudden knows what the cards are that that Donald is going to play. And so what does he want to do? How does he want to combat that? What are the things that he thinks will be the assets to him? But I think you’re going to see those three pairs together as they go out in that opening foursomes session. They’ve got the continuity, they’ve got the confidence to try to do what no European team has done since 2012. The Miracle at Medinah. So the question then becomes does that happen this time around, or does team USA win yet again on home soil? Michael, you get to go first. USA, USA, 15.5, 12.5. I think what’s going to end up happening is this you’re going to get a lot of experience from the players on the US side that have done this before. I think there’s going to be some great conversation between Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas and others. Bryson DeChambeau is going to be an important part of this team as well. And then also too, let’s not forget about the rookies. Russell Henley is third best player in the Official World Golf Rankings. He’s going to be somebody that’s going to be a reliable player. JJ Spaun I love the way he is playing coming into this and also to his temperament. I think he’s going to be an important player. And then, of course, Cam Young, who has won here on this this Bethpage State Park black golf course before when he was younger as an amateur. And so I think you’re going to be able to lean on some rookies to have some, some really good performance. And when it’s all said and done, the USA gets it done. 15.5, 12.5. I think everything says Europe, especially at that plus 170 price tag, the continuity, the experience, the form. But I’m with Michael against my better judgment at that. At that rate to where I’m going with team USA. I really liked what he had to say about the rookies outside of Scottie Scheffler. Keegan Bradley’s best four player statistically right now. These last three months are his four rookies. I think they’re going to have to really rely on them. And I do have faith in someone like Ben Griffin, someone like JJ Spaun, who have performed really well down the stretch, Cameron Young with those ties to the area. And I think you’re going to need someone ala Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele to really elevate their games, which they have shown capable of doing. And I think the one wild card for team USA, obviously it’s Scottie Scheffler. He’s going to play his best. I have faith that he’s going to play his best. But let’s not forget about Pat in the hat. Patrick Cantlay. This is a guy who has thrived in these situations. Remember in Rome. Remember the Presidents Cup as the sun was setting in Royal Montreal? He seems to elevate his game in this team setting. And I think Cantlay is capable of alongside Scheffler and Schauffele and the rest of the gang, keeping the US Ryder Cup at home. Only a few more sleeps, as some would say. Michael Breed and Patrick McDonnell guys certainly appreciated. Action gets underway starting Friday again. 1. Sergio Garcia waggles on his grip, I counted 6 at the Ryder cup from the singles match against Phil Mickelson. 😂😂😂

  2. This thing about the money, what does anyone expect from Americans. Just as greedy as all the rest in the country. Everyone of both teams could give $500,000 to charity & not notice the loss in their accounts, so be paid is 100% against the reason for the Ryder Cup competition. Samual Ryder would not condone this at all, the USPGA could have donated the money to Charities without this nonsense.

  3. Yea, but Brian Harman takes the proverbial CAKE with his minimum 12 waggles/per shot out side of putting!

  4. It is a shame that you guys look forward to the crowd violating everything that golf is about – fairness, respect for the game, not disturbing other players concentration, and most probably even some cheating when a ball lands in the crowd. But Europe will be prepared.

  5. My worry is the combination of sniper rifles, AR15's and a New York Trans-Furry murdering one or more of the European team.

  6. In my 8th decade and have played golf for 70 years. Sam Ryder would not approve of what this competion has become. Golf has moved on from a gentle gane of gentlemen. The Ryder Cup today is like a Roman gladiator circus. Replete with crowds of savages baying for blood. This is not golf. It is anger. This old Scottish game, played over natural terrain has been transformed into a sort of demonic inversion of its original ethos. I shall not be watching this travesty.

  7. Ryder Cup, a course superintendent's dream, getting to set up your course with the Captain and be a wicked devil. It's a little known fact outside the trade.

  8. Walk on any public golf course today in America where you find the "common" man and ask them who they're favorite golfers are and you'll get two answers… Scottie and Bryson… Bryson has done more to bring the common working man into the game… Golf is no longer carry's the stigma of the sophisticated man's game, but average working men like me who carry a tool belt on his side now loves this game… Brysons the Dale Earnhardt of golf, you either like him or hate him but in the end, he'll be a Legend!
