IN SEPTEMBER HISTORY IN BASEBALL. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN NOW? NOW I KNOW YOU HAVE TO COMEBACK AND THE GUARDIANS WHO PLAYED WELL, THEY PITCHED REALLY WELL INCREDIBLE. BUT WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE TIGERS UH, THE PITCHING HAS JUST BEEN ABOMINABLE AND UH, YOU KNOW, IT WAS INTERESTING BECAUSE EARLIER THIS YEAR, DAN, THEY LIKE THEY LOOKED LIKE MAYBE THE BEST TEAM IN BASEBALL AND THEY HAD CONTINUED WHAT THEY’D DONE TO EVERYONE ELSE. LAST SEPTEMBER, THAT’S HAPPENING TO THEM RIGHT NOW. REMEMBER, THEY WERE 55 AND 63 AT 1 POINT. THEY TRADED JACK, FLARITY LAST YEAR AND THEY WOUND UP MAKING A PRETTY SPIRITED, PLAYOFF RUN TO THE DIVISION SERIES WHERE THEY PUSHED CLEVELAND TO GAME 5 BEFORE CLEVELAND WON THAT SERIES AND FACE THE YANKEES IN THE ALCS. BUT UH, WHAT THE TIGERS HAVE DONE TO THIS POINT. IT’S, IT’S EMBARRASSING AND NOBODY THERE, FRANKLY HAS ANY ANSWERS FOR IT. AJ HINCH IS SAYING, YOU KNOW. WE’RE TRYING, WE’RE UH, WE’RE WE’RE DOING OUR BEST BUT THEY JUST THEY LOOK LIFELESS OUT THERE. AND WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE TALENT ON THIS CLEVELAND GUARDIAN TEAM, YOU SAY HOW YEAH, THEY HAVE 2 HITTERS IN JOSE RAMIREZ AND KYLE MANZARDO, WHO HAVE OPIATES PLUSES OVER 100. WHICH MEANS THEY HAVE 2 HITTERS WHO ARE BETTER THAN LEAGUE AVERAGE 2 AND THEY’RE GOING TO WIN. IT LOOKS LIKE AT THIS POINT THE AMERICAN LEAGUE CENTRAL DIVISION AND YOU LOOK AT THEIR PITCHING STAFF AND LET’S NOT FORGET, THEY LOST THEIR ALL WORLDS CLOSER AND A ROTATION PIECE IN A MANUAL CLASS, A AND LUIS ORTIZ TO UH, ALLEGATIONS OF BEING INVOLVED IN GAMBLING. AND SO THE GUARDIANS LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE COOKED, THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT TRADING, STEVEN KWAN AT THE DEADLINE AND HERE THEY ARE EVERY YEAR. UH, STEPHEN VOGT HAS DONE AN INCREDIBLE JOB MANAGING THIS TEAM AND THEY JUST NEVER LOST FAITH. AND YOU GOTTA BELIEVE IN TEAMS, UH, THAT CAN PUSH ON WITH WHAT THEY’VE BEEN THROUGH. I SAID A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, IF CAL RALEIGH HIT 60 AND THEY WON THE DIVISION MVP, BEING A CATCHER AND THEY THEY BETTER THAN AVERAGE CATCHER. YOU WIN THAT DIVISION AND YOU’RE HITTING 60 HOME RUNS. WELL CHECK, CHECK, CHECK, CHECK, MVP? YOU’RE DON’T DON’T YOU HAVE YOU TAKEN A STRAW VOTE HERE? I I DON’T I DON’T ASK OTHER REPORTERS. IT’S LIKE ASKING SOMEBODY WHO YOU VOTED FOR. THERE ARE JUST THINGS THAT YOU’D LIKE YOU DON’T DO IN POLITE SOCIETY. DAMN, AND I I LET’S PUT IT THIS WAY. I’M LIKE, I’M GLAD THAT I’M NOT VOTING FOR MVP THIS YEAR BECAUSE IT IT’S THERE’S SUCH GREAT CASES TO BE MADE FOR BOTH PAL, RALEIGH AND FOR AARON JUDGE. AND, AND LET ME TURN THIS ON YOU SINCE YOU ARE IN THE THE CLEAR PRO RALLY CAMP. AARON JUDGE IS OPS RIGHT NOW 175 POINTS HIGHER THAN CAL RALLIES. ARE YOU TELLING ME THAT BECAUSE CAL RALLY HAS A HOME RUN TOTAL THAT ENDS IN A ROUND NUMBER. AND THAT BECAUSE CAL RALEIGH HAPPENS TO PLAY WITH REALLY GOOD, GUYS SURROUNDING HIM AND A TEAM THAT WENT OUT AND GOT JOSH NAYLOR AND GINO SUAREZ AT THE DEADLINE THAT HELPED PUSH THEM TOWARD THAT DIVISION TITLE ARE YOU TELLING ME ALL THAT MAKES UP ALONG WITH THE DEFENSIVE ELEMENTS FOR THAT 175 POINT GAP, WHICH IS REAL WHICH IS SIGNIFICANT ENORMOUS. OKAY, FAIR ENOUGH. I I THINK IT’S A GREAT HONESTLY. I THINK BOTH OF THEM HAVE HE’S MOVING PAST. MICKEY MANEL AS A SWITCH HITTER, HE’S HITTING 60 HOME RUNS AND HE’S DOING IT AT THE HAPPENS. I MEAN, NO, IT NEVER. IT NEVER HAS AND IT WON’T HAPPEN AGAIN. I MEAN, HE HE’LL HIT 38 NEXT YEAR, BUT SO. SO DO YOU THINK, DO YOU THINK YOU’RE SUFFERING FROM AARON JUDGE? YES, YES. YEAH. WELL, THAT’S THAT’S THE SEA. BUT IT HAPPENS, THOUGH. JEFF IT HAPPENED WITH MICHAEL JORDAN. I VOTED FOR HIM EVERY YEAR, EVEN WHEN BARKLEY AND KARL MALONE WON BECAUSE THEY SAID THERE’S NO MORE VALUABLE PLAYER TO THE LEAGUE THAN MICHAEL, JORDAN. I DON’T CARE WHAT YOUR NUMBERS ARE. I DON’T CARE WHAT YOUR TEAM DID. THAT GUY IS THE MOST VALUABLE AARON JUDGE AND SHOHEI. OHTANI I SAID I THOUGHT KYLE SCHWARBER DESERVED A LOT MORE RESPECT THAN HE’S GETTING HE’S GOING TO BE A DISTANT SECOND TO SHOW. HEY, YUTANI. AND I THINK THAT GIVEN WHAT THE PHIL PHILLIES GOT THE BEST ODDS TO WIN THE WORLD SERIES SCHWER HAS BEEN UNBELIEVABLE. BUT YOU KNOW, WE OTANI HAS THAT ADVANTAGE HIS HIS SECOND HOME RUN. LAST NIGHT WAS SPECTACULAR 468 FEET JUST INTO THE NIGHT IN PHILADELPHIA. HE’S ABSOLUTELY CARRIED THE PHILLIES TO THIS POINT. AND YEAH, I LISTEN, I’M WITH YOU, BUT I, I THINK, I THINK THERE’S A LITTLE INCONSISTENCY GOING ON HERE. IF YOU’RE VOTING FOR MICHAEL, JORDAN, EVERY YEAR WHEN MICHAEL JORDAN WAS PUTTING UP THE BEST NUMBERS HAVE YOU SOFTENED AS AS YOU HAVE, UH, GROWN WISE AND AND GONE MORE FOR THE NARRATIVE VOTE, BECAUSE THE OBJECTIVE VOTE IS UNQUESTIONABLY HE’S GOING TO BE A DISTANT FAIR AND JUDGE. THE NARRATIVE AARON JUDGE WAS NOT MICHAEL JORDAN IN THE POSTSEASON. I WAS VOTING ON THE TOTALITY OF WHAT THAT SEASON WAS GOING TO BE. AND AARON JUDGE IS NOT A GREAT POSTSEASON PERFORMER. YEAH. ALL. OF OUR VOTES ARE DUE, UH, BEFORE THE POSTSEASON BEGINS. OH, I’M NOT SAYING THAT WHAT, YOU KNOW, WHAT MY FORMULA WAS WAS FAIR, BUT I THINK IT KIND OF BORE OUT THAT. HEY, HE DID WIN 6 CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THOSE YEARS, EVEN WHEN HE WASN’T THE MVP I AND AARON JUDGE, YOU KNOW, HAS DONE INCREDIBLE, YOU KNOW HIT IN 50 HOME RUNS AND, UH, HE’S BEEN INCREDIBLE TIME. HE REALLY. YEAH, HE REALLY HAS BEEN INCREDIBLE. I JUST THINK, YOU KNOW, THIS IS A WRITER. WE LOVE A NEW STORY. WHAT ELSE ARE YOU GOING TO SAY ABOUT AARON JUDGE? YOU KNOW, HE NEARLY WENT TO THE GIANTS. UH, BOY, HE WAS A GREAT HIGH SCHOOL TIGHT END. UH, WHAT, UH, HOW ABOUT, OKAY. HOW ABOUT THIS AARON JUDGE IS IN THE MIDST OF 1, OF THE GREAT STRETCHES, IN BASEBALL HISTORY, FOR HITTERS, PUTTING HIM UP THERE WITH BARRY BONDS, BABE RUTH AND I’M NOT SURE WHO ELSE LIKE IT’S 1 OF THOSE TYPES OF STRETCHES WHERE WHEN YOU LOOK AT WHAT AARON JUDGE HAS DONE OVER THE LAST 4 SEASONS, IN PARTICULAR, BUT REALLY FOR THE ENTIRETY OF HIS CAREER, HE HAS MADE HIMSELF WITHIN 10 YEARS, AND INNER CIRCLE. FIRST BALLOT, NO DOUBT HALL OF FAMER. WHO’S GOING TO GO DOWN AMONG THE GREATEST PLAYERS IN THE HISTORY OF THE GREATEST FRANCHISE IN BASEBALL. AND, AND THIS THIS YEAR IN PARTICULAR, WHAT HE’S DOING, HE’S LEADING THE LEAGUE IN BATTING HITTING 3:30 OR AROUND 3:30 WHEN NOBODY HITS FOR AVERAGE ANYMORE. UH IN AN ERA WHERE HOME RUNS UH, ARE NOT DIFFICULT TO COME BY NECESSARILY BUT CERTAINLY NOT EASY, HE’S GOING OUT AND HITTING THEM WITH REGULARITY. HE GETS ON BASE, MORE THAN ANYONE, HE SLUGS, BETTER THAN ANYONE, HE JUST PUTS UP NUMBERS THAT ARE SO MUCH DIFFERENT THAN EVERYBODY ELSE IN THE SPORT. HE IS THE OUTLIER PROBLEM WITH THAT, DAN, AND, AND I, WHEN I WAS HE’S NOT A GREAT POSTSEASON PERFORMER. HAS NOT BEEN. YEAH. OKAY. BUT WE LOOK AT ALL OF THE DO WE FOCUS ON? THAT’S HOW YOU BECOME RATES OF ALL TIME. AARON JUDGE IS A WONDERFUL REGULAR SEASON PLAYER. I HAVE NO, DO YOU DO YOU THINK, DO YOU THINK DAN MARINO WAS GREAT? DO YOU THINK CHARLES BARKLEY WAS GREAT? I MEAN, COME ON. LIKE, THEY WERE GREAT REGULAR SEASON PLAYERS. YEAH, I DON’T I DON’T I DON’T PERSONALLY DIFFERENTIATE THOSE 2, I FEEL LIKE BUT WE DO THAT WITH QUARTERBACKS ALL THE TIME. ELIZA GOING TO THE HALL OF FAME. WHY? BECAUSE HE WON 2, SUPER BOWLS. NOT BECAUSE OF WHAT HE DID DURING THE REGULAR SEASON. SO WE PICK, YOU KNOW, WHY DON’T WE DO THAT IN OTHER WIN ANYTHING. RIGHT. YEAH, WE WE, WE CRUSHED CLAYTON KERSHAW BECAUSE HE CAN’T DO ANYTHING IN THE POSTSEASON. HE’S 1 OF THE GREATEST REGULAR SEASON PITCHERS OF ALL TIME, LIKE WE DO HOLD OTHER PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE IN OTHER SPORTS. WHY CAN’T WE DO THAT? YOU KNOW, ASIDE FROM JUST QUARTERBACKS. OH, 100% YOU CAN IT IS WITHIN YOUR RIGHT? AND IT MAKES FOR A GREAT ARGUMENTS. I JUST, YOU KNOW, I I I LOOK AT IT LIKE, UH, I, I THINK THE REGULAR SEASON MATTERS, AND I I JUST DON’T WANT THAT TO GET SWEPT AWAY AMID, ALL OF THE THE DISCUSSION ABOUT WHAT THE POSTSEASON IS. OKAY? SO THAT’S OTANI IS ALWAYS GOING TO HAVE LIKE A 20-YARD HEAD START AND A 40-YARD DASH. RIGHT? TOTALLY. I MEAN EVERY SEASON HE STARTS AT THE 20 YARD LINE AND EVERYBODY STARTS, YOU KNOW, AT THE STARTING LINE, UM AND HE DIDN’T REALLY PITCH THAT MUCH. IT’S JUST NOW HE DID, YOU KNOW, HIT HOME RUNS BUT HE DIDN’T STEAL BASES. LIKE HE DID HIS AVERAGE, YOU KNOW, DIP CONSIDERABLY, BUT HE’S GOING TO RUN AWAY WITH ANOTHER MVP. YEAH, BECAUSE HE’S PUTTING UP, ALMOST IDENTICAL NUMBERS AND IN SOME CASES, BETTER NUMBERS THAN KYLE SCHWARBER. AND OH, BY THE WAY, HE THREW 58 INNINGS OF SUB. 3 ERA. BASEBALL ON TOP OF THAT. LIKE, IT’S JUST, IT’S, IT’S TOUGH FOR ME TO TO LOOK AT OHTANI AND NOT VOTE FOR HIM. EVERY YEAR HE SAYS HEALTHY JUST BECAUSE HE’S 2 PLAYERS IN 1 DUDE. I LIKE YOU JUST I I CAN’T GET PAST THAT HE HE IS THE FREAK OF ALL FREAKS. AND UH, HONORING HIM WITH THE MVP AWARD, I’M NOT SURE THAT EVEN DOES, UH, DOES HIM THE SERVICE THAT HE’S OWED FELT LIKE A LITTLE TENSE THERE? I’M SORRY. I GET A LITTLE ANIMATED HERE. SO OH NO TENSION AT ALL. I LISTEN I I APPRECIATE, I APPRECIATE ARGUING WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE WRONG. IT’S GREAT. I KNOW ME TOO. UM, CAN WE GET RID OF THIS STUPID TERM ROBO UMP BECAUSE IT’S NOT A ROBO UMP. OKAY, IT IS NOT A ROBO UMP, UM, BUT PEOPLE THINK THEY’RE GONNA BE ROBOTS OUT THERE JEFF AND I TELL THEM I KNOW, BUT CAN I, YEAH, BUT I, I LOVE THAT I WOULD LOVE TO SEE LIKE, JUST JUST, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE WHAT A ROBOT UMPIRE STRIKE CALL WOULD LOOK LIKE LIKE THAT. ENOUGH. THESE DAYS WHERE I FEEL LIKE THE GUY WOULD BE LIKE PRETTY SMOOTH AND CALLING A STRIKE AND I’VE ALWAYS WONDERED LIKE IF I WERE AN UMPIRE, WHAT WOULD MY STRIKE 3 CALL B? I FEEL LIKE WE COULD GET A ROBOT UMPIRE DOING A BACKFLIP INTO THE SPLITS AND THEN JUST LIKE RINGING THE GUY UP RIGHT THERE, BUT NO, THE, THE AUTOMATED BALL STRIKE SYSTEM. IT’S 12 CAMERAS THAT ARE AROUND THE BALLPARK THAT CAN TRACK A PITCH, UH, WITH MARGIN OF ERROR OF 1, SIXTH OF AN INCH. AND THE IDEA IS TO ENSURE THAT THERE ARE NO, REALLY BAD CALLS THAT ARE MADE IN HIGH LEVERAGE, UH, IMPORTANT SITUATIONS AND AND BEYOND THAT, I THINK IT’S ALSO AN OPPORTUNITY OR IT’S GOING TO BECOME AN OPPORTUNITY TO REWARD PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND THE STRIKE ZONE. LIKE IF YOU’RE A CATCHER OR A HITTER WHO HAS A GREAT GRASP OF THE STRIKE ZONE, THIS IS A RULE THAT’S GOING TO ADVANTAGE YOU AND IT’S GOING TO MAKE YOU BECOME A MORE VALUABLE PLAYER. YOU KNOW, WHAT’S GREAT ABOUT THE POSTSEASON? WE DON’T START WITH SOMEBODY ON SECOND BASE IN THE 10TH D. I’M, I’M LISTEN, I LIKE I, I, I LOVE, I LOVE THE PITCHFORK. I THINK ABS IS GOING TO BE REALLY GREAT. I AM TOTALLY WITH YOU ON THE AUTOMATIC RUNNER AND I I THINK IT’S A I I GET THE INTENTION BEHIND IT. UM, I I JUST DON’T LIKE IT. GIVE ME GIVE ME 17 IN A GAME ALL DAY. I’LL TAKE HIM,

Hey Dan, they have an MVP for the post season. This is a regular season award.
"along with defensive considerations" mumbled… People are mumbling that a lot. 😀 This is a great discussion – thanks for acknowledging how interesting it is.
A Catcher have a harder job than an outfielder. MVP for Cal
They take Judge for granted
I think analytics totally screws up the narrative. 1941 and 1947 Joe DiMaggio was the MVP when Ted Williams had superior offensive stats, including a 550 OBP in 41. I know DiMaggio had his famous 56 game hitting streak in 41, but in that basically two month period his batting average was similar to Williams’ for an entire season. I guess I’m trying to say that numbers don’t necessarily tell the whole story( of course there’s also the contentious relationship Williams had with some of the press).
Stat-wise, Judge is the most talented but for the MVP (most valuable player), Raleigh deserves it more.
outfielders just stand there most of the time/.. catcher works all the time
If you took 150 points off Cal Raleigh's OPS, he would be a league average hitter. If you took 150 points off Judge's OPS, he would be Cal Raleigh. Literally the difference between being a league average hitter and Cal is less than the difference between Cal and Judge. If the numbers were close, I would give it to Cal for playing catcher and handling the pitching staff. However, the numbers just aren't close. If the MVP is supposed to go to the best player, it goes to Judge. If the MVP is supposed to go to "who we want to win based on vibes" then sure, give it to Cal.
Dan with a great comeback….”me too.” I love arguing with people who are wrong.
Dan, you're off base, in my opinion.
Is the MVP a batting award? If it is then yes Aaron Judge, but if it is an all round player and what that player contributes to overall team, then it is Cal Raleigh!
Funny how Passan changes his tune when he is on a national broadcast…
Cal Raleigh has been great this year, but Aaron Judge has been much better. My biggest issue with Raleigh is his .248 batting average, although he does walk a lot.
Cal has mean more to his team this year than judge is to the Yankees and is kinda not close. I know the OPS is pretty wide but 60hr to 51 where HR is king, close race but all the momentum is with cal and mariners clinching the ALwest
THERE'S A BATTING AWARD.
Why is this a discussion?!
Judge: stick numbers big
Cal: LITERALLY EVERYTHING ELSE
Where were these arguments when Mike Trout won MVP?
Raleigh is a switch hitter and a catcher….consider that…
i am fine with Cal winning it but brining in the post season of previous years for a reglaur season award is absurd. The 2025 season is the only thing that can matter in this race. And even more so, its not like we know anytbing about Cal as a post season preformer. The argument for Cal has to start and end with he is a catchet and that added defence, framing and game calling lifts him ahead. Beacsue judge is so much further above him offensively
Passan is wrong and it's clear he has no respect for the toughest position in all of baseball.
Sad that these "experts" can't see how important the catcher position is. He is calling pitches to 15+ pitchers, through the year, to get out 9+ hitters a night. Playing a factor on every single pitch that is thrown. Executing a pitching game plan PER HITTER. Raleigh has the biggest impact on over 75% of Seattle's games. Judge is the BEST HITTER in the MLB, no doubt. Look at what the players do in totality, not just with stick in his hand. Judge is playing the OF spot where they play the slowest outfielder generally and isn't as involved as the rest of the team on a pitch per pitch basis. Raleigh is the AL MVP no matter what the voting comes out as and anyone that truly understands baseball/softball knows this
So many people jump on the Cal wagon, but if Otani was the one competing against him, would you guys have the same arguments?😂
Dan is pushing the narrative of post-season numbers for a regular-season award come on
This shouldn't be that hard. It's most valuable PLAYER, not best statistical hitter. Raleigh is (1) an everyday – heck, every PITCH – position player, (2) plays through the incredibly taxing wear and tear of a catcher rather than a part-time right fielder, (3) has broken the HR record for catchers by a margin that is equivalent to someone hitting NINETY-ONE HRs in a season to shatter Bonds' 73 homers in a season, think about that and it should end the discussion, (4) far ahead of Judge by huge margins in two of the three triple crown categories, just as Judge has significantly bested Raleigh in the other triple crown category. WAR has never correctly valued catchers, but baseball people get it. Cal is an easy pick in a year that should've been impossible.
lol so this is just Dan talking about why writers shouldn’t be voting for the award. Because they care most about the story, objective truth be damned.
Everybody knows Cal Raleigh was a beast in his 5 postseason games. Wait what’s that? He has a postseason OPS of 0.701 versus Judge’s 0.768?
Does Dan realize that the MVP is a regular season award and not a postseason award.
The writers will go with the richest teams.
Nonsense. An MVP batting .242 is ridiculous.
They don’t account for defense. They account for total WAR and Judge is 3 points higher. His OPS is 180 points higher. Both deserve it but I think Judge will get it. Oh and a batting title to boot
It's obvious dan paticia doesn't like Judge by bringing Judge's lack of postseason attribution. As a Yankee fan, I'll vote for Raleigh just for the fact that he's a switch hitting catcher putting up these numbers. And his stats are better than Judge's with runners in scoring position. But based on Pasans initial response, it seems like it's "priced in" and they'll give it to Judge.
Judge is an inner circle, but MVP is not a career achievement award. Both are having historic seasons. . As hitting stats go Judge wins… but context should matter… Cal is on a team that has half the payroll of the yankees. Judge has 3 former MVPs on his team. Seattle just clinched a first round bye and is only 1 game back of the yankees record wise. Things can change with 3-4 games left, but Cal is the front runner. I am a yankee fan.
the same should be for Ohtani vs Schwarber… the phillies are 4 games ahead of the dodgers… Real wins… not Theoretical(WAR) Ohtani has been a DH. sure he's ramping it up now, but its 50 innings not 200. Their payrolls are both top 3 in the league, with the dodgers 50M ahead.
I'm not even going to watch the video, and I know what Jeff Passan's going to do. He's going to enjoy listening to himself talk.
Give it Cal..He's well deserving of it. Plus Aaron has already won it. The type of person Aaron is he probably would want Cal to win
A-Rod wasn’t a great postseason player until 2009
Cal Raleigh has an OBP of .360
Aaron Judge's is .457
Judge is on base nearly 1 in 10 more times – and still cracked 50HR despite injury.
He creates opportunities for his team to score.
He leads the league in runs.
Judge is defying his age.
Judge is the MVP.
IBBs Judge 36 Raleigh 17. BB managers say Judge is the MVP.
3:21 "Yes"… 😂 I agree with Jeff BTW
Why is the world series mvp named after Mays!!!!instead of Mantle or Yogi !!!!!! MICK 7 championship s Yogi 10 ? Ridiculous!!!
Cal at the catcher position hitting 60 is a no brainer for MVP. People dont quite understand the positional grind at catcher. Not only that, but he's leading a team to the division title for the first time in 24 years. You can argue the trade dealine pieces, but that only happened because of Cal that the Mariners actually made a move. Judge is great- no doubt, but Cal gets the award.
Geez….. this is a regular season award. Postseason does not matter for it. Cal had a great year, but the average is so low. Currently 98 in the whole league, that is too much of a difference for me. Judge has so many #1 stats and leading by a lot as well.
