EXCLUSIVE: After landing film rights earlier this year to the Kevin Cook book The Tiger Slam, chronicling the rise of golfer Tiger Woods, and onboarding King Richard‘s Reinaldo Marcus Green to direct, Amazon MGM Studios has found a writer for the adaptation in Alex Convery.
No stranger either to Amazon or to remarkable true stories from the world of athletics, Convery comes to the project following his work on Air, the Black List-nominated spec on Nike’s bid to sign a young Michael Jordan, which Ben Affleck directed for the studio to critical acclaim.
Published in December 2024, The Tiger Slam delivers a gripping, inside-the-ropes account of an astonishing streak of victories that left Woods’ rivals scrambling to keep up. The book specifically hones in on a historic run from 2000-2001, when Woods captured four consecutive major championships, beginning with the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. As the book recounts, Woods went on to victory at the Open Championship at St. Andrews before besting Bob May at the 2000 PGA Championship at Valhalla and conquering the 2001 Masters at Augusta National.
In the book, readers hear from many of golf’s biggest names — Tiger’s caddie, his coach, his opponents, his idols, and others, all offering fresh insight into the electrifying highs of his victories and the obstacles on and off the course that threatened his relentless pursuit of perfection.
Winkler Films and Higher Ground are producing the feature take.
A buzzy emerging writer from the Chicago area, Convery solidified a career as a screenwriter with the spec that went on to become Air, a film starring Matt Damon, Affleck, Viola Davis and more that grossed over $90 million in theaters before making its way to Prime Video and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture. Currently, the young scribe is developing a limited series based on the Shohei Ohtani interpreter gambling scandal for Starz and Lionsgate. Also previously adapting the Mitch Albom novel Fab Five as a film for Skydance with Justin Lin attached to direct, he’s represented by Untitled, UTA, and Yorn Levine.
