European Ryder Cup fans got their own back on their savage American rivals with a brilliant takedown of Patrick Cantlay.

The home galleries at Bethpage Black gave Rory McIlroy some over-the-top abuse before a ball had even been struck on the opening first day morning foursomes.

They chanted “f*** you, Rory” when the Euro talisman appeared on the giant screens at the first tee.

Yanks also screamed “fat boy” at Jon Rahm.

But Team Europe supporters got involved in some sledging of their own – and it was far funnier.

In the context of US player Cantlay being embroiled in controversy over his refusal to wear a cap in Rome two years ago, he got it tight off visiting fans.

They sang, “Cantlay has his hat on, hip, hip, hooray. Cantlay’s got his hat on coz he’s gonna get some pay”.

At the last Ryder Cup, rumours were rife he was not wearing a cap in a silent protest against players not being paid to play.

But he has one on this time after the Americans decided to renumerate their players.
