Good afternoon to you here from from very sunny Beth Paige. Well, one of the big talking points in the buildup to this RDER Cup has been the fact that two years ago this whole RAW erupted over some of the US players feeling they should be paid to participate in the RDER Cup. Whereas the Europeans were adamant they were doing it just for the honor of representing their continent. That has reared its head again and it was a big topic in the press conferences which Keegan Bradley and Luke Donald have just given. And I’m not sure if I was good for far as called a grilling, but Keegan Bradley was certainly asked on a number of occasions about it. That’s what I had to say. Tasked with the job, the PJ America asked me to do and uh you know, this was what we decided and you know, we wanted to bring the RDER Cup into today’s age and we we felt like this was the best way to do it. We we copied a lot about what the President’s Cup does and um you know we we did the best we could and I think a lot of good is going to come from this. I think that the players are going to do a lot of good with this money and um I think it’s great. I mean obviously you you rightly recognize that the players are able to do a lot of good with it but I think the optics of it are questionable given the finances already involved in golf. Do you have any do you have any regret about that aspect at all? Um, I I don’t really get uh that, but I I think, you know, the the goal here was the the charity dollars hadn’t been raised in 25 26 years. And that’s what we started out doing. And uh we again, we we did a lot of what the President’s Cup did. And these players are going to do the right thing and do a lot of really good with this money. I mean, you can uh say that, but I think that the players are really good people and are going to do a lot of good things. So that was Keegan Bradley. Jamie, I gather you got a Luke Donald response. What did he have to say? Yeah, that’s right, Mike. Well, Luke Donald usually plays his card pretty close to his chest. He usually doesn’t give too many controversial opinions, but he was fairly adamant when I spoke to him about this that, you know, a lot of the European guys have said in the buildup to this Ryder Cup, not only do we not feel we should be paid, but actually we would pay out of our own pockets to be part of the European team. That’s how much it means to us. And there has always been this perception that it quote unquote means more to the European players than it does to the US players. And I do think this is something which could be a bit of an albatross around the US neck and something which Luke Donald will try to leverage to show just that that it sort of means more to Europe. This is what he had to say when I asked him about it. Yeah, this came up and I wanted to get ahead of it and um you know talked to the 12 guys in Rome you know when when it looked like that the US were going to do something different with payments and you know every one of them was just like no we we don’t want to play pay get this isn’t a week to get paid um you know we have such um a strong purpose in this team what we play for and you know to be honest we reinvest that some of that money back into the experience of these guys you know and I feel like if you have those experience experiences that you remember for the rest of your life, that’s worth more than a couple hundred,000 in the back of your pocket. So, you know, for me, uh, I was very proud of the guys. You know, I think um the the ideals of, you know, how this Ryder Cup was set up back in the 20s by Samuel Ryder, I think he would have been proud,

  1. Americans are genetically addicted to money – they would not take a breath of air – unless some fool paid them – they are pathetic

  2. There is a true old saying ……… you cannot buy class …….The trash of Americans on full display…..

  3. Surely with the net worths of these Americans on the team. Being part of golf history would superceded the idea of another cheque to be committed to the team. Shame on them. The ryder cup is about competition and etiquette, NOT about money

  4. The European team attitude exemplifies what the Ryder Cup is all about. American attitude is all about greed unfortunately. Play for the honour for goodness sake.

  5. Way to spin it- the US players want the money in charity contributions . Not for themselves. But nice spin.

  6. Whole thing is a bit of a storm in a teecup.

Just make it donation payment so it doesnt go directly to them and straight to nominated charities instead. Job done.

  7. Good to see Cantlay has got a cap that fits……….or is that just because he’s now getting paid? Unbelievable and embarrassing that they want to be paid even if they’re trying to make out the money will go to good causes.

  8. Many sides make tons of money out of the Ryder Cup, the Media, the location where they play, the Tours, the sponsors. The players? They do as well – indirectly. Being a Ryder Cup player means more appearance money for playing, more sponsors and advertisement money, more clicks on Youtube.
So, not really something to complain about, but the players take also some risks of loss of reputation if they loose their matches and are blamed for being bad team players (like Tiger), bad patriots not giving their best (that is for the US guys) or making critical remarks (like Cantlay last time).
It is a good solution that each player receives a certain part of the huge amount of money made with the event to give to a charity or golf supporting programs of their choice.

  9. I hope Team USA get hammered for it by their own golf press. I have a feeling that the wagons will circle at some point though.

  10. How many times does this come up with the US team? It seems to be quite a regular thing. These guys are multi-millionaires, why do they need more money?

  11. While i don't think they should be paid… Skysports and TV networks will be making Billions over this coverage and it will just line their pockets.
I think the Players should say that at least 50% off all revenue goes to Grass roots Golf in Europe and the USA.

  12. Could someone please explain to me where all the money goes to that millions of dollars that are ploughing into the Ryder cup and no one apparently gets paid, is it the most corrupt sporting event in the world or am I missing something?

  13. Some of the Europeans are more popular with New Yorkers than most of the US team. This payment thing was a BIG mistake.

  14. Let's not count other people's money. It's okay to have different opinions. Some players want to get paid while some don't care and that's okay.

  15. The Americans are a disgrace to the sport!!
Nicklaus, jacklin, seve ,didn't need it so why these mediocre pre madonas do is beyond me!!!
Oh and keegan Bradley's a knob on a good day!!!

  16. Most people don't realize that this competition only happens every two years, it's major major pressure and the prep and hard work are all weeks and months in the making….it's not about greed it's about getting paid and getting paid right for the work put in….a total foreign concept to European and British people!!! Hope the Yanks spank Europeans sore into humble admission

  17. I think it's a mistake and I'm rooting for USA. Keegan is in a tough spot here. He has to take the company line. It's his job to say that. It is cool about the charity side but that doesn't wipe away the central issue. Just watched the European Our Time, Our Place video and I'm about to lose it. So well done. There is a fundamental difference between the two teams and everybody knows it, whether they admit it or not. As close as these teams are on the golf side, it could very well make the difference. But I was equally moved by the US team meeting in the morning. All these people are the best. I hope it goes right down to the wire. I also hope the NY fans aren't a-holes. Love both teams but I have to stop cheering for the players I always do (like Fleetwood Mac) especially when they do that damn ole ole ole chant. I hate that. 😉 Play well, all! Exciting stuff!

  18. You can feel how uncomfortable Keegan feels about this. Guaranteed if this was the other way round Bradley would be calling out Europe.

  19. Multi millionaires. Its pure greed. If they are to be paid the money should be paid directly to charities.

  20. Hopefully this fires up the European team, it should NEVER be about money as all these players are multimillionaire's anyway! Perhaps the USA team needs some more incentive to beat Europe?

  21. If we are talking about people getting paid I think we need to look at all areas of this, lets be honest the people competing are the only ones not making an absolute killing, where are the questions around the completely insane sums of money the media like Sky Sports make out of this?

  22. Keegan at 1:20: "The goal here was that the charity dollars hadn't been raised for 25…26 years. And that's what we started out doing"

Oh come on Keegan! Don't re-write the narrative. Yes, the charity amount has been raised but FOR THE FIRST TIME (and this is what the whole furore is about) players are receiving an appearance fee.

Don't make out that this has been done out of the goodness of the player's hearts- it is just so offensive
