BELLE ASBURY OF TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, a sophomore on the women’s golf team from San Antonio, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning September 22.

Bel, first congratulations. Um, had a great season last year. Pretty much led TLU women’s golf in every tournament. Just kind of speak about that first season and trying to find yourself as a freshman here at TU. Yeah, the difference between high school to collegiate is definitely um a big change. So, it was pretty um important to me that I was able to uh make that transition as smoothly as possible. So, I just think that means uh great things are coming for the rest of my college um career. So, Bill, just speaking you off camera, golf is something that’s kind of been part of your life for pretty much your entire life. Uh the Olympia Hills Golf Camp, just kind of talk about that and your experience as a kid growing up in that. So yeah, every summer my dad would sign me up for um this little kids camp and at the time maybe only 10 kids would show up and of course every time I was the only girl. Um and I was always the littlest one there. I was five, six, seven when I would go and I would just kind of always at that young age then even like beat up on the boys and just have so much fun playing and just getting better and playing with other kids too. Um, and now the camp’s grown to be like huge. Now when I now that I coach it, there’s we’ll get camps with over 25 kids and like half of them are girls and that’s amazing to be kind of um part of that growth. Now as a college athlete, what is your like motivation to keep going back to coaching is just seeing kids who actually like love the game uh get introduced to it that normally wouldn’t be introduced to it. I think that’s such an important thing even if they don’t take it as seriously as me. Like just keeping the game alive and keeping people interested. It’s so important and it’s refreshing to show me that like I take golf so serious all year round. Of course that those kids show me that golf is fun. Like I started golf because it was fun. And at the end of the day, good or bad round, I play golf because it’s fun. All right. Thanks, Bill. And any parting words to anyone just starting golf? Um, oh, just do it. Get out there, have fun. Don’t worry about what other people are thinking about you. Um, I know there’s like um a stereotype that golfers are like so professional and classy, and that’s not the truth at all. Just go out there and have fun.
