Stuart Grehan has been crowned the 2025 Bridgestone Men’s Order of Merit champion after the County Louth golfer produced a history making season on his return to the Irish amateur circuit.
Having stepped away from the professional ranks last year, Grehan made his mark from the outset with a semi-final run at the West of Ireland Amateur Open Championship in April. That performance earned him 170 points and an early place inside the top three on the rankings.
Grehan climbed to the summit in May after a seventh-place finish at the Munster Men’s Stroke Play was followed by victory at the Flogas Irish Men’s Amateur Open.
Those results saw him open a 355 point gap at the top of the leaderboard and despite pressure from likes of East of Ireland champion David Howard (Fota Island), North of Ireland champion Caolan Rafferty (Dundalk), West of Ireland champion Dylan Holmes (Greystones) and a strong performing Keith Egan (Carton House), Grehan extended his advantage as the summer progressed.
His Order of Merit success was effectively sealed in August when he became only the third player since Pádraig Harrington in 1995 and Peter O’Keeffe in 2021 to complete a famous Open–Close double. Victory at the AIG Irish Amateur Close in Westport earned him another 300 points, pushing his tally past the 1,000 mark.
Grehan finished the season on 1,125 points, 495 clear of Rafferty, who made history of his own by completing the regional Grand Slam when he claimed victory at the North of Ireland in Portstewart last week. Egan, Howard and Holmes completed the top five.
His outstanding campaign also secured selection for the Irish Men’s Home Internationals and European Team Championships, before a call-up to the GB&I Walker Cup side in August capped an impressive return to the amateur game.
Both the Men’s and Women’s Bridgestone Order of Merit titles are now decided as Aideen Walsh (Lahinch) secured her win as a third-place finish at the Dun Laoghaire Scratch Cup in July followed by a run to the last 16 of the AIG Irish Women’s Amateur Close Championship in August saw her claim the crown by 95 points from Tramore’s Anna Dawson.
