BETHPAGE, N.Y. — The U.S. Ryder Cup team, like the country it represents, isn’t known for subtlety.

While European fans are putting pen to paper creating the next clever first-tee fight song, American fans are putting the finishing touches on face paint and mentally rehearsing chants of ‘U-S-A, U-S-A!’

Inside the team room, Europe has a consistency in message, a philosophy of passing the torch from one team to the next. Team USA seems to develop a new identity for one wild week every two years.

It’s too early to say what this year’s identity will be for the stars and stripes, but the front-running guess is that Bryson DeChambeau will be a central part of it.

“If he views himself as a gladiator golfer, this is as good as it gets,” Xander Schauffele said Tuesday of the possibilities of mixing Bryson with New York sports fans and a Ryder Cup. “He’s been awesome in the team room.

“I’m excited to sort of see what he can do and hopefully get a lot of points up on the board because his points might hit harder than maybe my points, for example, just because of how he might celebrate and get these fans into this tournament quickly.”

Schauffele is right in that there is no greater stage for the man who undeniably is the game’s greatest showman.

As golf leans into celebrity culture from YouTube Golf to Creator Classic tournaments, the modern Ryder Cup is the pinnacle of where the world’s best golfers can show off their personality inside golf’s traditional eco-system. So don’t expect Bryson to waste this golden opportunity to grow his brand (whoops, I mean the game).

“I think the only way he gets attention is by mentioning other people,” McIlroy recently said of DeChambeau to the Guardian‘s Ewan Murray. “That is basically what I think of that. To get attention he will mention me or Scottie (Scheffler) or others.”

That comment came after DeChambeau said he plans to be “chirping” in McIlroy’s ear if the two play one another at Bethpage.

McIlroy famously didn’t say a word to Bryson in the final group at the Masters in April, which DeChambeau admitted bothered him.

For every one traditionalist that cringes at Bryson’s self-promotion, there’s about a million viewers who have decided they like what he brings to the sport. Golf appears to be at an intersection and, make no mistake, Bryson is the one directing traffic.

Every other golfer that has left for LIV Golf has seen their image and status in the game shrink, but not DeChambeau.

Back on the main stage this week, you can bet he’ll be ready.

“I think he’s done a huge job of trying to insert himself on this team,” U.S. Open champ J.J. Spaun said. “Given his personality and his brand, he’s great with the fans. I think that’s going to be a huge attribute to the team this week.”

Golf fans slam Donald Trump over ‘absurd’ Ryder Cup boast

Captain Keegan Bradley of Team United States waves while walking the 12th hole prior to the Ryder Cup.

Why Keegan Bradley was right to skip playing in the Ryder Cup

To DeChambeau’s credit, captain Bradley said the LIV Golf star has gone out of his way to attend team events and make sure he is a part of the team atmosphere.

“He’s made every effort possible and been incredible in the team room,” Bradley said.

Scottie Scheffler is easily the best golfer here this week, but even the world No. 1 understands the exponential energy DeChambeau is capable of bringing to a Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.

“He brings a lot of energy, the people love him and I think he loves the opportunity to be able to represent his country. He’s a multiple-time U.S. Open winner and that means a lot to him. Being an American I think means a lot to him as well,” Scheffler said. “I’m excited to kind of unleash him this week.”

Like every bright idea that a U.S. Ryder Cup team brings to the course, it will either be a booming success or a spectacular failure.

But it won’t be subtle.
