While the Irish Open is always a special event, the images that beamed around the globe during the final round of the 2025 edition ensured that it will live long in the memory. Rory McIlroy’s triumph was a sight to behold, immediately becoming one of the biggest Irish sporting events in recent memory.
The Irish Open is not necessarily the most prestigious tournament on the DP World Tour for most players, but it is always supporters brilliantly by our native golfers. The likes of Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, and Padraig Harrington have been fixtures at the tournament over the last couple of decades.
There are not many national opens around the world that can attract players of such a calibre.

Rory McIlroy Made Telling Comment About Irish Open Fans To Shane Lowry
Rory McIlroy received a huge amount of support during the final round of the Irish Open, and speaking to The Guardian, Shane Lowry said that he told the Holywood man hopes that the fans appreciate just how special it is to see a player such as the Down man on an annual basis.
McIlroy would go on to suggest to him that the players were the lucky ones to receive such support.
I said to [McIlroy] the other day, I am starting to get really jealous. I also said to him that I hope Irish people realise how lucky they are to have Rory at that level, coming back to play the Irish Open every year.
He says, ‘Yeah, but how lucky are we to have that support?’
I was very jealous of the Masters, I was very jealous that Irish Open Sunday. I am happy for him, of course I am, but I want to achieve stuff myself.
I want it so badly. I want everything, I want to achieve it all. If I was to pack it all in now, would I be happy with what I have?
I have had a pretty good career. But do I want more? Absolutely. That is the reason to get up in the morning.
While McIlroy has been criticised by some in this country down through the years, his comment about Irish golf fans shows how much he enjoys teeing it up in Ireland whenever he gets the chance.
Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy will be given the rare opportunity to line up as teammates this week, with the pair set to feature on the European team at the Ryder Cup in Bethpage. The two previously played together in the four balls at the 2021 edition and have since gone on to claim the Zurich Classic as a duo in 2024.
It would be fantastic to see the two of them be given the opportunity to play alongside one another again on this occasion.
