Liang Wenchong believes the National Games this November will deliver a health check on golf in mainland China.
The country is still waiting for its first men’s major champion, after Liang’s Guangdong colleague Li Haotong added a tied-fourth finish in this year’s Open Championship to his 2017 third place in the same tournament.
In contrast, Feng Shanshan and Yin Ruoning, have both won the Women’s PGA Championship, in 2012, and 2023, respectively.
Liang, whose best performance at a major was his tie for eighth at the 2010 PGA Championship, became the first Chinese man to climb into the world’s top 100 in 2008.
Li reached No 32 in 2018, but is now ranked just inside the top 80. The pair will both try to snatch the individual Games crown from 2021 champion Carl Yuan at Hong Kong Golf Club from November 13 to 16.
“The National Games is very special, and it will allow us to see how golf is developing in [mainland] China,” Liang said. “It’s the one time all the players from the different provinces are together and we get to see the standard.”
