President Donald Trump’s administration took credit for the Ryder Cup being played, with some praise from Bryson DeChambeau.

There truly is no sporting event like the Ryder Cup. With days left before balls fly at Bethpage Black, we’ve already got the president of the United States taking credit for the tournament being played, and world golf superstar praising him in a White House press briefing.

The Ryder Cup doesn’t begin until Sept. 26 on Long Island, but in her press briefing on Sept. 22, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt claimed the Team USA vs. Europe golf event wouldn’t happen without intervention from President Doland Trump.

“This event is one of the greatest sporting events in the world, and it would not be taking place this year without President Trump’s help,” Leavitt said from behind the White House press podium. “President Trump signed an executive order last week that would have crippled the New York City area ahead of the tournament and at the request of the five labor unions who all represent workers of the Long Island Railroad.”

Trump did indeed sign an executive order on Sept. 16. Per ABC 7 in New York, the order established an emergency board designed to “investigate disputes” between the LIRR and its unions.

“That means service will continue on the busiest commuter railroad in North America while this emergency board process is underway. A strike could occur next May, however, if a compromise with the MTA isn’t reached,” the ABC 7 story reads.

Leavitt wasn’t done there. She also read a statement from DeChambeau, “one of the greatest golfers in the world,” in which the LIV Golf star and Team USA member praised the president’s decision.

“When the possibility of a strike threatened to disrupt transportation and attendance, President Trump stepped up and took the action needed to protect this world-class competition,” DeChambeau’s quote read, as relayed by Leavitt. “Thanks to President Trump’s decisive leadership, the Ryder Cup experience will be everything fans and the golf community deserve.”

That DeChambeau was picked to deliver a statement is unsurprising. He’s close with Trump and the administration. Trump appeared on DeChambeau’s “Break 50” YouTube series in 2024, and DeChambeau was even on stage for Trump’s election night celebration after winning back the presidency. Trump also named DeChambeau to The President’s Council on Sports, Nutrition and Fitness earlier this year.

Trump Talk Takes Up Some Ryder Cup Oxygen

Trump, meanwhile, looms over the Ryder Cup. He plans to attend the Friday team matches at Bethpage Black. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in his pre-tournament press conference spoke about the president’s love for golf, revealing Trump sometimes calls him to congratulate him after big wins.

It also sounds as if Trump might be on property ahead of the tournament. He was in New York to address the United Nations general assembly on Sept. 24. Asked about speculation Trump could show up a day later, Team USA captain Keegan Bradley didn’t deny it.

“I’m deeply honored that the president of the United States is going to come support our team at the Ryder Cup. I think anytime you can be around a current president is a pretty phenomenal thing, but when you’re representing your country at a place like Bethpage Black in New York, having the president there to support you is something that is just absolutely incredible. I’m really grateful to him doing that for us.”
