After a tough Sunday at the BMW, Robert MacIntyre returns with renewed focus at East Lake. He credits his driver and putter for his solid start and opens up about the emotional toll of last week. Honest and fiery as ever, MacIntyre shares what he’s learning from high-pressure moments and how it’s fueling his long-term growth, especially looking ahead to Bethpage.
Good. Are you tired of the heat, Bob? I’m getting there. Give me three more days. Um, yeah, it’s difficult, but um, look, I wear as much sun cream as I possibly can. Uh, I look like Casper the ghost out there to be honest. I hear a lot of shouts about my sun cream. So, no, it’s it is difficult, but it’s the same for everyone. Yeah, it is. What worked best for you today? Driving and patting again. drove the ball beautifully. Um, which you’ve got to do around here to have to be able to put a score together. So, yeah, drove it nicely and put worked again. So, um, while that’s working, we just keep the foot down. Is there is there something that’s kind of maybe like changed a little bit with the with with those two things for you? I mean, we talked about the putting last week a ton. Yeah. Um, my driving’s been good all year. Uh, there’s obviously off weeks where we’re human. Um, but driving’s been really good this year. I changed a couple of things with the driver. Changed a couple of things and the tea heights, different shots. Um, yeah, it’s just piecing together the puzzle. How long did it take you to get over Sunday? Um, probably till today until I started warming up today. Um, yeah, it was disappointing. I’ve not really done a full I’ve not done a full debrief on on what happened. Um, But yeah, it’s going to hurt no matter who you are. I’m just the honest guy that comes out and says it. Did you have to get a new set of clubs or were you nice to yours at the end of the day? Caddy took them away before I got a hold of them. Um, no, they were safe. Look, it was just it was one of them days. Um, there’s a lot that I’m going to learn from that day. Um, from the way I handled myself as in interacting with the crowd. Um but yeah, as I say, I’ve not done a debrief enough. I had a talk with the guys that are here in my team, four of us. Uh well, three, Mike, Maddi, Mike Kansky, pton coach, study, my manager. Um done it with a little half an hour, 40 minute chat in the house, um on Monday. I didn’t do anything Monday, so we done a little chat, but I’ll do a full debrief of of what happened on Sunday. I’m trying to think that was probably your first um I don’t want to call it big stage but first big stage in in America probably was it or first time you had it was first time at the lead. I mean the US Open this year was obviously um massive. It just didn’t didn’t fall my way but um that was a big scramble kind of for everybody it seemed like. Yeah, exactly. It was it was just a roll the dice and see who’s who’s whose number comes up. Um, yeah. I just there’s a couple of things that I know that I’m going to change, but do you know what it’s really going to help me for? Beth Paige. There’s things that I’m going to learn that from that week or from that them two days, Saturday, Sunday especially that are going to help me in Baltimore for Beth Page. You mean 100%. Yeah. It’s going to be the way I handle myself. Not so much my attitude out there because I’m fiery. I’m always going to be fiery. I’m always going to be Yeah. elsewhere. Yeah, I’ll get angry, but just the way I interacted with the crowd, I was trying to keep them out out the way, but instead of doing what I done on Saturday and bring them into Yeah. Does it to see Tommy come back every week of close calls? He’s back on the leaderboard again. What’s that tell you about his resilience? Yeah, look, Tommy’s a great player and it’s a matter of time. I don’t think he’s I don’t think he’s worried about if it’s going to happen. It’s just a matter of of when it’s going to happen. I mean, I’m lucky enough that I’ve got two wins last year. Um I’m yet to win on American soil, but it’s been um yeah, it’s it’s I’m building. I’m I’m doing the right things. Everything that I do in the game of golf just now is or in my life almost is to get better at the game of golf. And I feel like statistically across the board I’m getting better. and the way I’m handling myself, the things I do outside the golf course, I’m doing it to improve the game of golf. Robert, you said you haven’t done a full debrief yet, but is what happened last week at the BFW in some way is that fuel to your fire this week or do you forget about it? No, that’s I mean, yeah, it’s there. It’s in the back of the mind. Um, but it’s not so much I’ve always got fuel in the fire. I’m every time I peg it up. If I’m if I’m teeing up off the first team here on Thursday, I’m I’m all in. I’m all guns blazing. Um there has been a lot of kind of disappointment over the last few days. Um I’ll be honest with you, it’s just been not wanting to peg it up here to be honest with you. Um, but the minute today I’ve woken up today and I’m getting ready to play golf, it’s like put that behind us for the week and let’s go to town on this place and um, give it our best shot. For those of us who haven’t been to Shinty, what’s an away crowd like there? It just depends. It depends what you’re playing in. Um, yeah, it can be different, but at least then you’ve got 11 other guys to back you up. last last week. It felt like it was me and Mike against the the whole of the area. Um, but yeah, it’s part of it and it’s going to be a great learning learning curve for me. I mean, I’m 29 year old now and I feel like I’m going to hopefully play play out here for a good length of time, playing big major championship, playing big tournaments, and I’m going to experience that again. Yeah. So, I just go out. What’s What’s the buzz like not only in in at home or across the UK? I mean, it’s it’s an away writer Cup. We know what that means. But does does the word Beth Page add anything to to what you’re hearing? I mean, not to me. I’m just going to play golf. Um, yeah, there’s no I’ve never played it, so just another golf course to be honest with you. It’s It’ll be It depends how they set it up. They’re not going to set it up like they did in Rome. So, um, yeah, we’ll go there and prepare the best we can when it the time comes and give our best. And lastly, is BMW the only thing you’ve got between now and and the RDER Cup or are you going to or do you do Irish as well or what’s your plan? No, no. So, it’ll be Wentworth. Wentworth’s only Yeah, BMW is the only thing that I’ll play. I need some time off. I’ve played I think this might be 23 or 24 in the season. It’s only August. Um and that’s including well that’s excluding two in Europe on the European tour. So um 26 events till August is quite you still have a few toward the end. Dubai and yeah I’ll play so I’ll play obviously RDER Cup Dunh Hill. Um it’s in Scotland can’t not. Um and then I’ll play the two in the Middle East to finish it off. Then we’ll see about the Bahamas. It’s hot there too. Okay. Thanks.
