Donald Trump has claimed responsibility for efforts surrounding the 2025 Ryder Cup in New York — including boasting about his role in securing its hosting rights — but the truth is that crucial decisions about the event were made years before his presidency.

The 45th Ryder Cup will take place from September 26–28, 2025, at Bethpage Black Course in Long Island, New York, though one former Team USA captain believes the venue selection was an error. The PGA of America and State of New York revealed Bethpage Black as the host venue back in 2013, well before Trump first took office.

The tournament, which drove Scottie Scheffler to tears following a disastrous performance in 2023, was initially planned for 2024 but was delayed to 2025 due to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In August, Trump utilized his social media platform to back U.S. captain Keegan Bradley and announce his plans to attend the competition.

“Keegan Bradley should DEFINITELY be on the American Ryder Cup Team – As Captain!!! … At the invite of the PGA Tour, I will be there on Tournament Friday!!!”

Trump also asserted that measures implemented by his administration — particularly an executive order to prevent a strike impacting New York City area public transit workers — were vital to avoiding disruption of the Ryder Cup.

During a White House briefing Monday, press secretary Karoline Leavitt declared, “This event is one of the greatest sporting events in the world and it would not be taking place this year without President Trump’s help.

“President Trump signed an executive order last week preventing a strike that would have crippled the New York City area ahead of the tournament and at the request of the five labor unions who all represent workers on the Long Island Rail Road.”

Team US star Bryson DeChambeau praised Trump for saving the Ryder Cup, saying to the Daily Caller, “The Ryder Cup is a true, almost century-old tradition in the world of golf and sports, and it’s an incredible honor for Long Island to host the 2025 Ryder Cup.

“When the possibility of a strike threatened to disrupt transportation and attendance, President Trump stepped in and took the action needed to protect this world-class competition. Thanks to President Trump’s decisive leadership, the Ryder Cup experience will be everything fans and the golf community deserve.”

DON’T MISS

Nevertheless, the chronology reveals a different story: Bethpage Black’s selection as the host venue and the official preparations for the 2025 Ryder Cup were locked in well before Trump’s administrative action that he references.

The location couldn’t be more deeply rooted in the tournament’s planning timeline.

Host site selections, operational preparations, and facility agreements usually commence more than ten years prior to competition week.
