11 minutes of added time at the end of the game, the Newcastle players must be
absolutely spent. What a game now, what a game.
It’s left, Engamara to finish it! He’s won it! Rio Engamara the teenager
and he himself has written his name into of folklore with a dramatic winner. What a moment for the young man
and what a moment for this Liverpool team.
Wow! When the ball came to him and the way he scored, such a firm finish he could have even taken
the first touch maybe if he would have missed it i would have told him that um
but but this finish he has uh and uh special for him special for And Slot’s lot looked shot,
so they brought on a 16-year-old. His name is Rio and he scored the winning goal. Yes, fantastic finish and even better dummy for the finish. Beautiful, that should be the assist ball,
shouldn’t it? Yeah, I think
that seems to be what everybody’s been saying today. Great finish, really cool finish. But it was, I mean it was just a ding dong do,
just such an exciting game, here to reflect on that and more, and look ahead to the weekend
with a little matter of Liverpool Arsenal, is John Barnes. Hi John.
Hi John. Hi guys, how are we doing?
Yeah, good thank you. Yeah, we’re good. Before we get on to last night,
you’ve got an event coming up around the Arsenal game on Sunday.
Tell us a little bit more about that. Yeah, well it’s a Premier League player
event created by Pico VR, you know the headsets where you can have lots of fun. It’s the first official VR game
and there are free tickets, free drinks so it’s going to be a great occasion. The Premier League trophy is also going
to be there with red so for the Liverpool fans come down to Camp
and Furnace in Liverpool so it’s going to be lots of fun
and of course there’s a game going on as well and a big game. Yeah, doesn’t get bigger than that
probably do two favourites. So yeah, it’s going to be a great
occasion I hope people can make it. It’s interesting off the back
of last night and giving away those two goals as Liverpool did
and some of the things we’ve seen before last night. There’s a few Arsenal fans in this building,
John, really fancying their chances. They’re saying well
if Liverpool don’t get another defender I think we’re going to have enough this season. What are you making of Liverpool so far,
especially defensively? Well of course you know the balance is
always important and as much as we’re talking about getting an ease stack
and looking how well Ekotike’s playing and we’ve scored three goals in both matches,
we’ve conceded two and we could have conceded more even
against Bournemouth so of course we have to get the balance right but the good thing
about this team is that as much as we haven’t played particularly well um
in first two games we’ve won two matches you know i remember when we won the league
on the jürgen i think when jürgen first came i think we we had to play well to win matches but if you can win matches
without playing well that’s the sign of champions as man united did in the um in the in the 90s
and early 2000s so you know we will get better in terms of our performances but as long
as you can keep picking up victories even when you’re not playing 100 % at your best is a good sign. Yeah, big game last night, big game at the weekend with the Arsenal quite early on in the season. Is that a good thing, John,
when you’re a player? Do you want to get those big games away early well the thing about it is
that obviously all games are are huge in the premier league because of course you know once
upon a time you look at your rivals and playing against your rivals and then say oh
if we beat them then that’s okay however as you saw against bournemouth you know anybody can beat anybody
in the premier league so you have to play them when it comes along so as much as i think
for the the teams who come up i think you’d much rather not play the big teams early on uh
so you can get some confidence but for teams like Like Liverpool, you know, Arsenal,
whenever the game comes up, they have to be ready. A little bit salty on a slot after the game,
despite getting the victory, saying he wasn’t sure
whether he saw a football match. He said it was set piece after set piece, long throws didn’t have a lot to do
with tactics it says but I mean look Newcastle were down to 10 men when they had to do what they had to do
and they showed an incredible amount of spirit and as a new troth that was incredibly cruel on them sure the Liverpool fans won’t care but for the effort they put in that they they deserve something from the game John it was a great effort from Newcastle and I suppose that you know on a slot on the big boys Man City have found out themselves last year and even this year that teams are and I’m going to come up
with different solutions to play against them. You know,
we went through a period a few years ago whereby everybody wanted to play
the beautiful game. We wanted to play like Man City. We wanted to play like Arsenal and Pep Guardiola trying to play good football. And those teams who weren’t good enough
to do that or weren’t as good as the big boys in doing that they got relegated
because southampton for example last year who was talking about playing out
from the back so now they’re coming up with different solutions to say can we upset them in different ways
and being more physical and be more direct and the big boys have to get used to that so as much as you know you can see
from that and in fact if you look at the way newcastle beat us in the carabao cup they were more physical
than us so suppose teams may look at that and think rather than trying to play beautiful football
against liverpool maybe we have to do different things and against Man City so I think
that you know the big boys are going to have to get used to that um straight after the goal went
in uh Stan Collymore put that picture up of the game against Newcastle uh Barnes Rush Collymore uh did Did that bring back those memories for you when you saw that one going at the end? Well, no. I’ll tell you what memory came back to me after Rio Ungamore scored that goal is because I know his house family,
should we say, because he moved up from London and he lives with a friend of mine funnily enough
in liverpool his house father and his house father who i met um a couple
of years ago actually showed me a picture of me and rio when rio was about seven years old in london
on the underground station i was in london on the underground
and he said oh here is rio who’s now and this was about a year ago before he was even in the first team
and he said oh you know here’s the young boy who’s living with us now here’s a picture of you of him
in london so i really should have signed him up as his agent often boys at that age, John get sent out
on loan just to get a bit of game experience and toughen up. But obviously Arna Slott feels
that he’s absolutely ready to play for Liverpool in the Premier League. He looks strong, isn’t he? And like Max Downman at the weekend,
they look ready, John. Yeah, well, you know, similar to,
I suppose, similar to Raheem Serling when they first came. He’s not come here to go out on loan. He’s come here as a 15-year-old wherever he can,
to really not to go out on loan. He’s come here,
not necessarily to go into the first team at 16, which we didn’t expect but to be nurtured to be
a you know players have been at liverpool from their 8 9 10 11 12 they’re now 16 they go out
on loan he’s come to liverpool at his age as a young teenager as in rahim to there really just go straight
into the first team fold without necessarily being thrust
into the action. And I’m sure
that he would rather not have brought him on under those circumstances, but he handled it with aplomb.
Yeah. Do you expect Liverpool to get the exact
deal done, John, before the window closes? Well, modern football is so strange, isn’t it? Because of course you can never tell
what’s going to happen. You can never tell. And of course,
you’re looking at the situation whereby we’ve scored six goals
in two matches. We’re not looking particularly solid
in terms of the transitions when we lose the ball
from a defensive midfield perspective, protecting our back four. So I’m thinking more defenders
and defensive midfield players more than Ezek is more necessary. But you have to take the chance to get
players when you can. Now as to whether you are going to dig their heels in,
we don’t know what the situation is. So I don’t expect anything in football.
But nothing surprises me. So it wouldn’t surprise me if it got done. It wouldn’t surprise me if it doesn’t get done. Yeah. In some ways,
I wonder if we’ll get the answers we’re expecting on Sunday in the Liverpool-Arsenal game
because they’re going to come pretty patched up. We know Saka’s not playing. Going to have Maduweke,
he’s not had a lot of game time on the right. Probably has in his first game on the left,
potentially. So, I mean, Liverpool may not be as tested at the back as they would have been
if Arsenal were full strength in those positions. Well, I mean,
Arsenal’s still a good attacking team, as we’ve seen. So, they’re still a fantastic team. The test will be there because they play
in a very attractive attacking way. But, you know, the solution to the problems isn’t always just signing players. You know,
if players aren’t injured or they’re not fit or you need, you know,
you only got three strikers where you need four, then you put Daumann and you put N’Gamoa. You have to work with what you have. You know,
I’m not going back to the old days when, you know, Liverpool won the league the year, a couple of years before I came
with using 13 pairs for the whole season. However, the whole idea
that we need a stronger squad when you’ve got 20 international players,
but then you’re a little bit light. You work with what you have
and you’ve got to put a young boy in and somebody else in as we’ve done in the pass on the Jurgen,
then that’s what you have to do. Yeah. Do you keep an eye on Celtic as well, John? None of your clubs you were involved in,
they’re in action this evening. Well, I don’t really have to
because they’re winning comfortably but they haven’t come in there. From a domestic point of view, um and of course rangers are going
through their problems now anyway so i don’t think that that’s going to be much of an issue
but you always keep an eye on them from a european perspective and it’s making it’s more difficult
for them in europe to really do what they did in the good old maybe henry glassen days and stuff
like that so yeah but it’s it’s a very comfortable situation
for Brendan Rodgers at this moment in time up
in Scotland no no he probably can’t believe his luck so there we are so
people can meet John Barnes yeah the weekend a live Q
&A see the Premier League trophy try VR football I hope it’s not thinking of Liverpool the Arsenal you were
in that Liverpool the Arsenal game weren’t you John when it’s all up
for grabs now you know when the league went on the last day
of the season don’t know what you’re talking about should have run it
in the corner John should have just run it in the corner you know what I always say who passed me the ball
because if he didn’t pass me the ball I would have had to take it in the corner it’s
like when Steven Gerrard slipped remember what did against Chris O’Pattles when
Steven Gerrard slipped and he blamed Steven Gerrard
for slipping well who passed him the He’s turned, he’s such a nice man.
I’ve just made him turn. Sorry, John.
I apologise. I’m part of the box. Yeah, at the Campham Furnace
in Liverpool this Sunday ahead of the game good to talk to you John all the best
John all the best guys thanks there we are

  1. Arsenal has already won the league there is no one on earth to say otherwise. Being the strongest team is the premier league the league Cup and the fa Cup is also already in the bag. Now Arteta and the team should solely focus on winning the champions league. As an Arsenal fan this is the best time ever. We are doing the quad folks.

  2. I’m just glad we don’t have a strange fanbase like a certain club from north London who compare a 15 year old kid to Cryuff and Messi on the back of winning a penalty

  3. No better man to offer advice or judge what Rio can do. John should be on TV much more. Great knowledge and good speaker.

  4. His name is Rio hear us sing it from the stands
Most fearless winger across all of these lands
And with the ball he really shows you all he can
Oh Rio, Rio, he’s a red and he’s our man

  5. Against Arsenal, I think we play 5,3,2. Here me out…

    Bradley, Konate, VVD, Gomez/Leoni, Robbo

    Szobo, Grav, Wirtz

    Salah, Ekitike

Frustrate Arsenal and catch them with pace and better execution on the break. Atm, we defo need to sure it up at the back somehow, and still have options to get the ball forward.

  6. When he said vr , I thought wouldn’t that be brilliant, a camera in amongst the crowds and you can look around with the headset. It would be like you’re there!

  7. NGUM STUCK TO HIS TASK what a move great advantage played by the ref great dummy by SOBZ and Rio makes History 4th youngest Goal scorer a day before Rooney Scored so the scousers develop young Success Folwer Owen Max Rooney Milner Gerrard Scholes Lampard Terry also had A 1st team place before 20 in high profile teams.

  8. BARNES my idol best player in Europe in the late 80s until injuries held him back in the 90s he went from Mo Salah to Graveyboat 96 was his last title.Push 6 years after our last leaugue win which ended up being 30

  9. John Barnes is a stuck up C U Next Tuesday. I saw him on Dale St L1, asked for a quick selfie politely, he was so rude.
    Nob'ed.
A nobody was with him and was saying "cmon lets go".
I regretted even speaking to the tw4t, especially the nobody who was next him, the ugly fker.

  10. Barneys knows his house father lol. No better football club to join tbf. Hope Slot plays Rio more as a sub.

    Liverpool always promoted youth

  11. Less than 41% gametime. Slot was right. Not a footballmatch. Newcastle was more direct and maybe deserved it. Slot didnt do well adjusting tactics, but game was won, so all is fine.

  12. The pass from assist King Salah was properly weighted to take a firm curling shot from Ngumoha.

  13. Ten men give 120%. Remember Liverpool beat the Toons when VVD was shown the red card and a goal down.

  14. New Castle pay 180 000 pounds you will have the last laughter and that will be best for your mourning St James Park❤❤❤❤❤

  15. Injury time all down to Newcastle players falling over and making dangerous challenges/lunges…deserved more red cards tbh.

  16. Thanks Mr Barners, a gem I loved to watch, very good insights and balance. So true that all games in PL are/should be tough, the smallest club out budgets 99% of the clubs in the world and can have their pick from the worlds best players.
Ps can you talk a little bit slower ? 😂

  17. I don't think Liverpool are ready to play Arsenal yet, it would have been better nearer to Xmas when all the new players have settled.

  18. Konate is not a long term solution at CB. He is mid at best and when VVD has a difficult day, they give up 2-4 goals
