Fat Perez vs. Dan Rapaport INDOOR LINKS GOLF DUEL
We’ve done one-on-one matches before. They’ve been extremely close. Always close. How you feeling? You feel good here? I feel good. I feel good. How do you feel? I’m kind of an indoor links player. We’ll see what happens. Indoor links golf. Cheers, my friend. Cheers. Low man wins. What’s up, guys? We’re here in Atlanta with Bush Mills. We’re going to play a three-hole match, me verse FP. We’re going to do them all on Irish courses because Bush Mills Irish Whiskey is the oldest distillery in the world and it’s a stone throw away from some of the best golf in the world. So, we’re going to do a very Ireland themed match today. I’m very much looking forward to it. Cheers, my friend. All right, the first hole is brought to you by Bush Mill’s 12-year single malt. This is complex yet approachable. Kind of like the sixth hole at La Hench. It’s a par4, 412 yds. You got to be a little strategic off the tea. I don’t think you’re going to be hitting driver, but once you find that fairway, it’s definitely a birdie opportunity. Let’s do it. Let’s get it going. Short par4 with some stuff kind of in the middle. So, I’m going to lay back. I got five wood. I’m going to go out to the right side. Try to come into the green with a with a fairway shot. That’s what we’re going for. Playing for position here. That’s right. I hopefully hit a fairway. Put a little pressure on. Yeah. M That looked good here. That looked like a good pass. Run through. Wa. Oh, now that came off right. Wow. Caught a little bit of a mound. Okay. Yeah, that came off real. I thought you hit that pretty good. I thought I did, too. I played this course not very long ago and I remember hitting a lot of forearms. So, we’re going to go right back to the well. Hopefully can find the fairway here on this short par four. Iron’s quite the flex. Complex yet approachable. Yeah, I don’t like it. Uh, it seems like See what’s going What’s going on there? It’s trying to draw. It’s trying to draw. Keep going. A kick. Okay, first cut. That’s all right. We’ll take it. Better. Okay, 200 yds to the pin. It’s playing It’s playing down 9 yd. So, that makes it 191. Going to take a little power off, but spin less. I’m going to hit my 190 club cuz I remember at these courses, you just don’t want to go long. Long seems bad. Long is dead at all these old schools, right? It’s supposed to be firm out there. Exactly. Right. Play the golf course like it was intended to be played. That looked like a good swing off right again. Something a little off. Interesting. Good strike. Perfect for distance. Real good strike. Way right though. 192 downhill again. Yeah. Basically the same thing you just talked about. I just take about eight off of it. Right. Pretty similar. Yeah. Pretty simple. You did all the math for me. It’s a beautiful thing for you. All right. This is where I can put a little pressure on. Our go. Balls are coming off right. We’re going to aim down the left side here. Oh, I kind of towed it. Get away with it. Little top spinner. It’s going to need a lot of top spin, Dan. They got a good one, though. Okay, that’s what we’re talking about, though. That’s the That’s the the miss on these Lynx horses. I’d rather be you than me. You’re coming from the fairway. I’m coming from the rough over a bunker. It’s an opportunity to uh to be special here. It’s an opportunity to be special. Listen, we said complex yet approachable. Mhm. We’re dealing with some complexity right now. Certainly complex. All right, we got to hit this a little right of it. 25 yds back into the breeze should help a little bit. It’s not really going to spin. [Music] Go, go, go. Oh. Oh, he sure did. I thought that was going to be short for a second. Nice shot. That worked out. All right, I think we’re on tour pro putting, so we’ll see. We’ll see what the putter see if the putter cooperates right now. We’re hitting a little pitch shot here. Bump and run. Little bump and run. Like old Tom meant. That’s not what we have, though. We have the 58. We’re going up a little bit. Going up. Going to carry it on. Yeah, I think so. [Music] Oh, is that good? Go in. Go in the hole. Hey, that’s classy right there. Love that. That’s classy right there. What’s it going to give me? He’s 4footered, bro. You’re I mean, Scott, I got to have that, right? Got to think that’s make that. I think you’re going to find out right now, though. It’s always the moment of truth. Bogey and you missed a 4-footer. Wow. This thing knows me well. This thing knows me real well. Threw me a bone. threw me a boat. That’s tough. That is tough. Wow. You know the vagaries of match play, as they say. All right, I got a little fortunate on the first hole. FP missed a 4-footer, so we are even going to the second. The second hole is presented by Bush Mills 16-ear single malt. This is as good as it gets. I was sipping a little of this off camera. It tastes like a warm hug to me. FB on that. It’s truly one of the best whisies in the world. And we’re going to play one of the best parfs in the world. The 18th out of Dare Manor. The match is all even. It’s all to play for. Well, cheers. All right, part five. Here you can see the manor. Did you know uh they they told me this when I was there? You know the difference between a castle and a manor? Is it who stays in it? Sort of. Okay. A castle is designed to keep people out. So, there’s like moes around and protection. A manor is designed to welcome people in. Learn something new every day. How about that? So, we’re going toward the manor here. There’s water down the left and a bunker that’s probably right in your landing area. It’s a tough T-shot. Yep. I’ll tell you what, I’ll take bunker over water uh all day. Yeah. Yeah. Certainly not left. No, I didn’t go left. I think as long as you can miss that tree, it should be fine. You just got to lay it up. It’s just It’s classic layup. Yeah, it’s a three shter. Three shot hole. It’s a three shter. Who do I think I am? Fairway is still open for you. Fairway is open, but it’s looking very narrow with all that water down the left. That really is an uncomfortable TI. You know what I mean? Just feels like everything in the world is telling you to just hit it at that bunker and just play from there. You’re too high. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Tell you what, coming back. Yep. You’re going to find the Come on now. Get past that bunker. Get past the bunker in the rough. We’ll take it. We’ll take it. We’re going to lay up from the angles. We’re going to lay up from there. playing as a three-shotter. I know that I will not. 270 out of 270. Yeah. Got to get smart here with the position. All right. Position play. Layup irons. You know how you feel about that. Yeah. It should be the best swing of the day. Yeah. And it was Oh jeez. Where’s that going? Get through. Definitely clip something for that only to go to 137. Still think I have an open shot. Yeah, I think you’re you’re only 140 from the rough. Okay, let’s see. Oh, the tree is giving me some issues. I think I got to go for it. I think I’m going to hit a five iron left and just find dry land. Wow. Trying to get as close to the hole as possible. Someone told me that that’s a good strategy on par fives. Mhm. Just get that in left hand. [Music] Oh, it’s more aggressive than he talked about, but I think he’s going to get away with it. I think so, too. I did not mean to hit it that far right, but that’s it. Sit right short of that bunker. A bad place to be, though. It’s going to be an interesting lie, but I’ll take it. Just give me a shot. Give us a chance. Give us a shot. Oh. Oh, you’re golden. Gold. And you got a lot of green to work with. 43. I like my chances here. We have I think just coming out of the rough. I’m need a little more club. So, we’re just going to hit a little eight iron. This is it. It’s nine iron all day. But we’re just going to we’re going to chop at this one a bit. Eat a good one. Uh-oh. Get going. Get going. Dig. It did. It did. And it got a kick forward, too. All right. That was close. That was That was close, man. He’s on, though. Green was feeling more like a castle than a manor on that one, dude. Trying to keep you out. Yeah, I didn’t like that. More more castled than manner. Okay. Oh, you’re not in the bunker. I’m not in the bunker, but it’s a short little shot. It’s only 14 yds. I’m not entirely sure how it’s going to come out. I’m going to try to give it some I’m going to try to give it some height. Oh, that’s a good play. Sit there. Sit there. Yeah, it’s smart. About 15 ft. Take that all day. Now, the moment of truth. Moment of truth. What’s it going to do? Four foot. No. Two putt. Oh, you made it. Made it. 13th. I’m putting my bird. That’s a nice bird. I’m putting lights out today, apparently. All right. The putter cooperated. Made a birdie on the last. So, I am one up going to the final hole. This final hole is brought to you by Bush Mills 21-year single malt. This 21-year single malt might be the pinnacle of whiskey. And we are going to play one of the holes that might be the pinnacle of parries. It’s the 13th at Royal Port Rush, which is just a stones throw away from the original Bush Mills Distillery. It is the oldest whiskey distillery in the world. Let’s finish with a bang. What do you say? Let’s do it. I don’t like to lose. Um, and I know you don’t either. So, the best I can get to tie, which I’m okay with, um, I got to hit one good golf shot and it’s up to the the putting gods. It’s up to the putting gods. What a beautiful golf hole. Looking at looking at these dunes. Looking at the the ocean in the background. This this hole is right in the middle of the property. It’s an epic T- shot. Wow. All right, let’s see if we can match it with the beautiful golf shot. I got faith in this. Oh, that felt good. That looked like a good pass, my friend. That looked like a good pass. Oh, it’s cutting. Oh, it’s fading. Oh, it’s cutting into that right bunker. Oh, no. The the club was perfect. The door is open. H. Let’s find the green here. Okay. All right. Door’s open. I’m going to need some help here. You are going to need some help here. And I I like you a lot, but I’m going to try not to provide it. That’s fair. All right. We’re going to go seven iron. We’re going to go right at the middle. Right at the flag. And just one one good swing away. Feeling great with the bushels. I’m rooting for you. Thanks, buddy. Oh, I did. I quacked it, Nick. Oh, he quacked it. I quacked it. Uh-oh. I quacked it. It’s holding its line there, though. It’s holding its line. Stay. You stay. You just have to be putting. And you are putting the contours. Using the contours. This is going to get better. Wow. You did what to it? I mean, I whacked it. I flushed it. Feels perfect. Flushed it. Flushed it. What a golf shot. That’s a problem. All right. I’m going to have to hold this. You’re going to have to hold this. You are going to have to hold this and hope for some help. Oh, this is fun. This is fun. I don’t You see that graphic? I don’t like that. Yeah, there’s a lot. Yeah, I don’t like that. That’s sand percentage. This Yeah, this is this just a lot going on here. 17. I don’t even know what to make with all that. I’m just going to go off straight feel here. It’s definitely spinning. Oh, it’s a good shot. It’s a very good shot. It’s a tidy shot. You know, I’m okay with that. But the way you’re putting today, I’m not sure they’re going to give you that. No, I don’t. I think that’s a three putt from what I’m seeing. All right, we got 19 ft and we got seven. I need a three putt from you and I need to drain this. You need some outliers as far as the algorithm goes. Let’s see it. They just you I mean they have you programmed as the worst putter in the world. I mean two putts from 7 ft. I can’t make anything. You missed a 4-footer and a 7 foot. Yeah, it’s tough. I’ll take it. I feel like there’s maybe a little asterisk with the putting performance, but you know what? I’ll take a victory. [Music] It was a hard fought match. Played great. I appreciate it. You know, we put it as tour pro put punting. I don’t know if they thought you were the worst tour pro putter on the plan. I don’t know which pro exactly they put me down as, but not not a very good one. I I definitely did not hit the ball like a golf pro. That was more like you on the tour pro side of things. I got it around. That’s how I play. You got it around. Have you been over there? Have you done a trip like this? Haven’t done Ireland. Done Scotland, but haven’t done Ireland. The whiskey is fantastic. Love that. The golf maybe even better. Cheers.

The intersection of golf and culture.
Behind every drained putt or hosel rocket into the stands is a human being with complex emotions—among them, an insatiable appetite for golf. That’s what we’re after. Golf’s humanity is what makes it so special to us. There have never been more reasons to love this game, and we’re endeavoring to explore them all.
