Nick Turowski chips onto the 18th green during a U.S. Open qualifier May 13 at Quicksilver Golf Club.

West Virginia University sophomore and Penn-Trafford grad Nick Turowski shot 3-under-par to finish in fifth place and lead the Mountaineers to a third-place finish at the Gopher Invitational at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn., on Sept. 15.

Turowski recorded rounds of 74-66-70—210 to post his second top five finish in as many weeks.

The Mountaineers placed third in the 15-team field with a 9-over finish. Texas A&M (even) won the event, followed by South Carolina (7-over).

WVU’s third-place finish was its highest finish in its six Gopher Invitational appearances.

On Sept. 1, Turowski finished third at the Island Resort Collegiate to open the 2025-26 season.

Sophomore Ryan Leach shot a school-record 17-under to win the tournament and lead WVU to the team title with a 55-under total.

Leach’s score beat the mark of 15-under set by Greensburg native Mark Goetz, and his 199 total score eclipsed Goetz’s record of 201, both set at the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate in 2021.

Turowski was 15-under with rounds of 66-69-66—201, setting a personal best with the rounds of 66.

Hanging tight

Penn-Trafford girls soccer team rebounded from a 3-0 loss to Norwin to defeat Armstrong, 5-1, on Sept. 17. The Warriors are now 4-1 in Section 1-4A, a game behind 5-0 Norwin. Penn-Trafford is 4-3-1 overall.

The Warriors have consecutive home games against North Hills (Sept. 27), Hempfield (Sept. 29) and Woodland Hills (Oct. 1).

Tennis team tied

The Penn-Trafford girls tennis team was tied for the Section 1-3A lead with Latrobe and Franklin Regional.

The Warriors lost to Latrobe, 3-2, and were scheduled to face Franklin Regional on Sept. 10.

The Penn-Trafford boys golf team will be sending three golfers to the first-round WPIAL qualifier. The section qualifier was held at Glengarry Golf Course.
