Olay, Olay, Olay, Olay. Europe is going to win the RDER Cup. Who am I kidding? USA is going to win the RDER Cup. But if Europe was going to win the RDER Cup, Rory Mroy would be the reason why. Here, I’m going to show you three things in Rory’s golf swing that is going to help you hit the golf ball further and control your golf ball. Go USA. But why should you listen to me? I’m just a humble PGA professional, newly named to the Golf Digest best teachers in Texas list. I’ve had 19 years of experience helping golfers of all abilities fix their golf games, play as good of golf as they can. I know for a fact I can point out what’s going on with Rory Mroy and how certain things in his golf swing will help you. Today we’re going to take a look at Rory Mroy. Go USA. But Rory Mroyy’s golf swing is one of the best in the game right now. I know he hasn’t had the success that he’s had since he won the Masters, but we’re going to take a look at the side view of his driver as well as his irons. And we’re going to look at some of the key differences that Rory’s trying to do right now. And one of the reasons why I believe he’s got a little bit of some inconsistency. We saw this at the Masters is he won despite making more doubles than any other Masters champion in history. But I want to specifically look at some of the shots that he hit down the stretch where those tight iron shots all within 15 ft on 15, 16, 17, and then the gap wedge that he hit on 18 were all high tiny draws with an iron. And yet his best TE- shots were tiny little cuts. And a lot of this can be seen in Rory’s setup. So, anytime I take a look at golf swings from the side, I draw a series of teleustrations. First one’s going to go up the shaft. We refer to this as the shaft plane. This is probably the only time you’ll ever hear me use the term plane. We’re going to go from that same point and we’re going to go up through the top of the trail elbow. I’m going to draw a line off the back of the hip as well as the front of the knee. and we’re going to draw a circle around his head in both images. So, as you can see from the onform skeleton, Rory sets up with his shoulders with his driver open or facing left of the target just a little bit. And yet his irons are very straight, if not slightly closed, along with his hips. Here, his hips are very straight. Yet his foot line is slightly closed to his shoulders where on his iron swing, his toe line and his shoulder line and his knees and his hips almost match up. Now, Rory, when he first came out on tour, used to hit big old high draws. That’s his natural shot. He has worked to learn how to hit the ball the other direction. When you hit the ball as long as Rory does. You can get away with playing any shot shape you want. Mere mortals and amateurs will always usually hit draws a little bit further. But the key here is you have to be able to spin the ball enough to keep it in the air to maximize your distance. We take a look at his back swing. Rory’s going to move his club, his hands inward around an him on an arc. His knuckles are still tracing the shaft plane from P1 to P2. as he takes his club back with his driver. You can see by the time he gets to P2, his knuckles are actually coming off, which means he’s taking the club more outside, trying not to swing inside out too much to try and hit a little bit of a cut because he’s afraid of the left miss. As he gets all the way to the top, his lead arm structure is really, really good. It’s almost perfectly parallel to his shoulder line, slightly above his right arm has gotten to about 90 degrees, but the right humorris or the upper arm has moved around his body and behind him. This creates a lot of length and a lot of width. It also helps him. He gets this by moving the humorris around, but he also gets this by turning his body on a tilted angle more than anybody. If you look at him with his irons, he still gets his arm in a very similar position along with his right arm. This is down here at Riviera where he earlier won this year. Still making a nice big shoulder turn on a tilted angle. His arm structure gets further back. You can notice the big difference here in the back swing is what his wrists are doing here. He’s got more radial deviation or hinging. This one he has a little bit less. Might not have turned as much. He’s also trying to hit a nice controlled iron shot here. Uh he’s not trying to hit this as far as humanly possible and bomb this. He’s trying to control this. And you’ll see this with a lot of tour pros is their driver swing will look slightly different than their iron swing simply because they are trying to hit it a very controlled distance. They are not trying to hit this as far as humanly possible with their irons. Remember, three fundamentals to golf. Make solid contact with it every time. Hit the ball far enough. Control the curve. Now, down swing. This is classic Rory. Rory has a big squat move. Knees thrust towards the target. You can see both knees are in front of where they were uh in the from a dress. that club is dropping down miles behind him and that requires Rory to rotate an absolute ton. When he was younger, he used to do this a lot more and his lower body would slam on the brakes really, really hard and actually retract backwards a little bit to let his arms catch up and unload the club with a lot of speed. He would drop this club back so far behind him, he would swing miles inside out. And that’s why he would fight either blocks to the right or he would overdraw and hook it to the left. As you see his down swing, he’s going to do the same thing, but because he shortened this up and he’s not swinging as long, it’s easier for him to get the club more in front of him. Okay, you can see here, here’s the club shaft. Slightly blurry image, I’m sorry. in between the elbow plane and the shaft plane. Yet, you can see the difference here in the driver shaft is much lower. Part of that is because it’s longer. Part of that is because he’s turned more in the back swing and he’s swinging more from the inside. Even though he’s trying to play a cut, he’s going to round the corner really, really well. He’s got the iron swing more in front of him. So he can swing a lot straighter and use the angle of attack to keep his path slightly inside out to play a tiny draw down through impact. We’re going to watch the shot tracer be pretty straight here. Chest rotates. Hands move around the arc. Club comes out just below the shoulder. Hands come out on the same spot, which means there’s no flipping. Nice controlled ball flight. Really straight. This ball might draw a little bit, but very, very, very good. This is Rory’s standard ball flight with an iron. We watch his driver. This ball, he actually hits it slightly on the heel, which is why this toe is crossed over. Is he hit this on the heel, which is going to give him typically a slight cut. So, this ball starts a little left, is going to cut. And you can see just how much higher this club shaft starts moving. Well, this is why Rory has a tendency to fight a hook with his driver and why he sets up to try and hit a tiny cut. It’s my opinion Rory would be really, really diabolical and hard to beat if with his driver he made his exit look more like his irons. He would hit the ball extremely straight and he would give Scotty Sheffller a run for his money. make your golf swing look more like Rory’s to hit the ball really, really, really straight and control everything. You can do that with your driver as well. Make sure check out my membership options. We’ve got membersonly exclusive content.
