AFA, Colo. – Sophomore Bryson Barnes is tied for 14th, while the CSUN Men’s Golf team is tied for 13th after the opening round of Air Force’s Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational on Saturday at Eisenhower Golf Course.
As a team, CSUN carded an opening round 7-over 295 and is tied with Denver and Nevada for 13th place in the 23-team field. Idaho is the team leader after 18 holes at 5-under 283, while Jared Abercrombie (CBU) and Paxton Maxwell (UVU) share the individual lead at 4-under 68.
Barnes was 4-over after his opening four holes before making birdies on four of his final five holes to make the turn at 1-over. A bogey at No. 11 dropped him back to 2-over before three birdies and four pars over his final seven holes dropped to 1-under 71 for the day. Barnes heads into round two in a tie for 14th place with 11 other players.

Following Barnes, junior Dillon Jonke is tied for 36th at 1-over 73. Jonke got as low as 2-under on the front nine following the third of his three birdies. After making the turn at 2-over, Jonke carded eight pars and one birdie on the back nine to finish the day at 1-over 73.
Sophomore Tavin Boman is tied for 63rd at 3-over 75 after one round. Boman had one birdie, 14 pars, two bogeys, and one double bogey in round one.
Sophomore Nick Fry is tied for 77th at 4-over 76 after making birdie on his opening hole before finishing 5-over the remainder of the round.
Domenic De Luca had three birdies, along with four bogeys and a pair of double bogeys, to finish the day tied for 91st at 5-over 77.
Three Matadors are competing in the individual tournament with junior Ethan Posthumus in third at 4-under 68, junior Liam Judkins tied for sixth at 2-under 70, and senior Yuo Torii 35th at 6-over 78.

“Bryson finished 1-over on the front and 2-under on the back, he managed his game well today. We didn’t finish well, got a couple of bad breaks, but hopefully we’ll play better tomorrow and get ourselves in a position to finish in the top half of the field.”
