Donald Trump has never been shy of controversy, but according to Andrew ‘Chubby’ Chandler – the former manager of Rory McIlroy – the US President once confessed to being a serial cheat.

Chandler, who parted ways with McIlroy in 2011, admits he has played golf with Trump several times and during their very first round, the golf-mad President came out with a remarkable line on the opening tee.

“He turned to me and said, ‘I just want to tell you – I cheat in business, I cheat on women, and I cheat on the golf course,’” Chandler recalled during an interview with CasinoHawks.

And from there, Trump apparently proved his point.

“What he does is move his ball… but the funny thing is, he moves yours as well,” Chandler laughed.

“It’s almost not cheating. It’s more like he’s rewriting the rules for everyone – as if to say, golf should just be fun.”

Chandler even referenced a recent viral clip of one of Trump’s caddies tossing a ball back into play: “I thought it was hilarious – you can’t quite work out what he’s up to.”

Still, Chandler insists Trump’s love for the game is undeniable.

“It’s all about him having fun.

“Like I say, you just cannot catch your breath how much he likes golf and how much the most famous and powerful man in the world, liking golf as much as that, is great for the game.

“So he cheats a bit. He tells you he cheats a bit. Is that cheating? Maybe it is, maybe it’s not.

“It doesn’t matter. But you know when he’s having a weekend off he’s playing golf with his granddaughter and I think that’s amazing.”

Trump, however, doesn’t just see himself as a keen amateur.

“In his mind he’ll be at Tiger Woods’ level soon too given they’re now related.”

For the record, golf legend Woods, winner of 15 career major titles, is currently dating Vanessa Trump, the ex-wife of Donald Trump Jr.

Earlier this season, Chandler is adamant Trump will get his Turnberry course back on the rota at The Open.

Golf legend Sir Nick Faldo and LPGA superstar Charley Hull were two of the 160 guests at the State Banquet.

Hull told BBC Radio 5 Live that golf was very much on the menu when she got to speak to President Trump, who confirmed he wants to play a round with the three-time LPGA winner before the end of the year.
