You want to learn how to stop pinching the pocket? Well, as a once trendy teen movie used to say, get your head in the game. Spin it. [Music] [Applause] Hey DMD family, welcome back to the channel. And just because we have an influx of new subs, thank you very much. got a good response to the last video. Just going to do a couple of admin things. Uh if you’re new to the channel, I usually do one video a week, usually on Tuesdays, except for this week and next week cuz I’m on vacation. Life just got in the way. So, it’s probably Thursday this week, Thursday next week. Then we’ll probably try to get back on to Tuesdays. I usually try to Wow, bugs just flying around my camera. Just flying right into the picture. Uh, I like to try to do like instructive videos and offset them with some, you know, fun, uh, type of, I don’t know, challenge videos or videos where I’m on a course throwing. Um, so that’s kind of my modus operandi. Um, links are in, uh, affiliate links are in the description below. I make little to nothing off of any of them really. I put out stuff pretty much every week. Uh, and I try to be entertaining and educational. So, uh, you’ll have fun. You really will. So, welcome. Thank you. Let’s get on to what we’re talking about today. All right. So, get this out of the way. I know Josh just put out a video about over rotating and drills to use to stop your over rotation. Uh we’re going to talk about over rotating and coming through too fast with our shoulders in this video. Um believe it or not, I did have this scheduled and planned for today. So I’m just going to go with Josh and I think a lot alike. And this is not in replacement of Josh’s video because I use the drills that Josh showed in that video. uh this is sort of a supplement to that uh because we’re all different and different things work for different people. Uh those drills that he gave are very effective. Uh but some of us are a little more stubborn than others and need a little bit extra help. Uh and also again we we all learn differently. Different things hit us different ways which is why we put out multiple videos on the same thing with tweaking things here and there, right? because one thing may not hit you, but another thing may, right? And that’s why I love the overthrow coaches, just because we tailor our methods to our athletes. We don’t tailor our athletes to our methods, right? We just we find things that work for you and then that’s what we use. If it doesn’t work for you, we move on and use something else. So today we’re going to talk about stopping over rotation of our shoulders, not pinching the pocket by controlling our head. Now I put a video out about this about a year or so ago, maybe longer than that. Uh I know Mikey did a video about it 3 months ago, but I know that we need to reiterate these things just because they’re so important. And again, we come at things a little bit differently, right? we tweak things a little bit differently just so it hits one person uh a little different and may be more effective for them. So, uh any coach who has ever coached softball or baseball uh worth their salt has uttered these words to a batter. You’re pulling your head out of your shot, right? Any coach worth their salt in any sport knows that the head controls the rest of the body. And the issue that I find with people who really have a problem with shoulder rotation is the fact that they’re using their head to guide their throw. And it usually looks like something like this, right? Where their head’s either leaning forward or really twisted and turned and their shoulders start turning. So, if we learn how to stop forcing the movement with our head, we have a better chance of slowing our shoulders down. So, here’s how I do it. Here’s how I coach it. Get a focal point that you can put behind you. Either a cone or I mean you can even put a disc on the ground. I’m going to use this red cone because it’s easier to see. And I’m going to try to put it in frame for you. Okay. And again, progressions. I’m going to do a stand still. Just get in my position, keep the focal point behind me because when I get into my back swing, I’m going to keep my head on that cone, and then send my arm forward. Okay. And that’s really all there is to it. I just want to keep my head back because keeping my head back in essence keeps my shoulders back. I’m less likely to drive my shoulders forward if my head remains back. Now, with standstills, it’s pretty easy to keep my eyes on that and just keep my eyes on it the entire time, okay? Cuz I’m not throwing really hard. The second step of the progression is just the X step. So, I’m going to start behind, right behind the cone, and I’m just going to do an X step and get into the same position and keep my eyes locked on that cone. Okay, again, not throwing very hard, so it’s not hard for me to just keep my head on the cone the entire time. The third progression is where it gets a little bit difficult to keep the head on the target the the cone the entire time. And we’re going to talk through that, but it looks something like this. [Music] Okay. So, you’ll notice my head did turn off the target because that was the momentum of my throw. The issue that I don’t want us to get into is trying to force ourselves to keep our head right on that cone and then twist something in our neck. That’s not going to be good for anybody. It’s going to get you injured. Here’s what you need to do with doing a full walk up or doing a more powerful throw with this drill. Let your back shoulder turn your head. Right? And I did this in baseball all the time. Right? It was shouldertosh shoulder. So, I get set up, put my chin on the shoulder, keep my focus on the pitcher, watch the ball till it’s right in front of me, chin on the shoulder, follow through, back shoulder pushes my head through. It’s the same thing here, right? So, we’ll get into the walk up. We’ll get to our back swing, throw, and let this shoulder push our head through. Don’t try to look forward when you’re throwing. Don’t try to pull your head forward. Don’t try to look forward. Just keep your head nice and easy and let your shoulders push your head through. It’s very, very difficult to pull your head uh pull your shoulders through a shot when your head is back. So, if we train ourselves to keep our head back, it’s easier for us to delay the shoulders until the hand gets through. Uh it’s a it’s been effective for me. It’s been effective for a couple of my athletes, so I’m putting it out there for you. This is in addition to the two drills that Josh talked about in his video. If you’re still having troubles, if it’s still if you’re still stubborn and can’t get your shoulders to slow down, give this a shot. It’s usually pretty reasonable and it usually works pretty well. Well, there you have it. Uh that’s that’s the drill. That’s the idea. I hope you find it useful. I hope it works for you.   1. Good one. Safe to say that majority of beginners have this issue because how are body works

I believe things like hip, shoulder, and head rotation are core problems that most players have, so it makes sense coaches might cover similar topics around the time, just as a matter of coincidence. Great minds think alike, and both you and Josh have years of coaching experience in other sports. And baseball/softball and tennis are very rotation-centric sports where timing and positioning are everything.

    I'm also in the same camp as Josh in that I'm interested in cues that work – not cues that are technically accurate but mean nothing to me (or whoever). Though it's great when technically correct cues coincide with what works for the student or learner. An example would be reachback. Works great for some people, not so much for others. 🙂

  3. Over 4 min in- still going on and on… lost me buddy. Do better. Your video is only 9 min long and you’re telling me how entertaining you are and how you are such a good teacher – cut to the chase. I’ll check your next video and see if you still praising yourself and start actually teaching.
