Enforcement officers with Newfoundland and Labrador’s wildlife department are looking for a man who was seen pointing a rifle at a moose from the side of the Trans-Canada Highway directly next to a golf course.

Officials with the department say a “fresh moose paunch” — the remains of the abdomen of the animal — was found just three metres into the woods off the side of the highway.

The remains were 75 metres west of the last putting green of the Grand Falls-Windsor Golf Club.

Provincial law makes it illegal to shoot a gun from a highway — including the shoulder of the road — and within 1,000 metres of an athletic field.

Officials say the incident is believed to have happened on Monday, between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m NT. The person was believed to be driving a grey or silver truck at the time.

Anyone who was in the area at the time and may have dashcam footage is asked to contact the resource enforcement division of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture.
