After months of anticipation, the 45th Ryder Cup is here and officially tees off from the vaunted Black Course at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, NY on Friday, Sept. 26.

The biennial event pits the top American golfers in the world against their European counterparts in a three day event, beginning with two sessions of fourball and foursome matches across the first two days, before shifting to singles matchplay on Sunday.

2025 Ryder Cup Format

Fourball sees each golfer play their own ball throughout the round, taking the lowest score of each hole posted between the two teammates in each pairings, while foursomes will have two teammates playing the same ball in an alternate shot match throughout the session.

Sunday singles is a one-on-one matchplay session to determine the Ryder Cup winner, with pressure-packed moments and high-stake shots being hit all over the course.

The Europeans have dominated the matchup in recent years, winning eight of the past 11 Ryder Cups.

In 2023, Europe cruised to a convincing 16½ – 11½ victory at Italy’s Marco Simeone Golf and Country Club, and will need to earn 14 out of a possible 28 points to retain the title this time around.

The Europeans got off to a hot start on Friday and swept the first foursomes session for their first 4-0 lead in Ryder Cup history.

They carried the momentum into afternoon fourballs, with Europe holding a 6½ – 1½ lead to close out other first day of competition. The United States either lost or halved all eight matches to begin the Ryder Cup, marking the first time they have failed to earn a win in a single day at the event.

The Americans would not be able to overcome the large deficit after Day 1, and would lose an away Ryder Cup for the seventh consecutive time.

This year however, the United States will have the advantage of playing at home, and will be able to set up the Black Course to their roster’s strengths, or Europe’s weaknesses.

Since the competition first began in 1927, the home team has either won or retained the Ryder Cup 27 out of 41 times, a winning percentage of roughly 65 per cent.

The European team looks very similar to the one rolled out in 2023, with mainstays Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Justin Rose, and Tommy Fleetwood all set to reprise their leading roles this year.

McIlroy, who has played in every edition of the Ryder Cup dating back to 2010, has been a part of two losing teams in his seven previous appearances at the event.

Both of those have come when playing away from home soil, but the recently-minted Grand Slam winner is up for the challenge this time around.

“I think one of the biggest accomplishments in golf right now is winning an away Ryder Cup,” he said after the win in 2023. “And that’s what we’re going to do at Bethpage.”

Denmark’s Rasmus Hojgaard is the only player that wasn’t a part of the 2023 winning side after earning an automatic qualifier spot by finishing inside the top six on the European Ryder Cup points list. He replaces his twin brother, Nicolai, on the team this year.

Luke Donald, who guided the team to victory at Marco Simeone, once again leads team Europe at Bethpage. With a victory this year, he can become the first captain since Tony Jacklin in 1985 and ’87 to win consecutive Ryder Cups.

“Even though we have a lot of continuity, this is a different animal,” Donald said. “We understand how difficult it is.”

Leading the Americans in New York is Keegan Bradley, who somewhat controversially chose to not be a playing captain despite finishing inside the top 12 on the Ryder Cup points list and holding the eighth-highest world ranking among Americans.

After being left off the team in 2023 by Zach Johnson, Bradley was named captain in July 2024 and spent much of the season deciding whether or not to be the first playing captain in Ryder Cup history since Arnold Palmer did so in 1963.

“This was a really tough decision,” he said after finalizing his captain’s picks. “I will say, there was a point where I was playing. All these guys stepped up in a major way and played their way on to this team, and that’s something that I’m really proud of, and something that I really wanted.”

Bradley’s team has six returning players from 2023, headlined by World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, and Collin Morikawa.

Bryson DeChambeau, a winner with the U.S. in 2021 at Whistling Straits, rejoins the roster after missing out at Marco Simeone, while J.J. Spaun, Russell Henley, Ben Griffin, and Cameron Young are all set for their Ryder Cup debuts next week.

FanDuel Sportsbook offers the United States as the favourite to win the 45th Ryder Cup at -145, implying the probability of an American victory at 59.2 per cent.
