Two-time Ryder Cup winner and Sky Sports pundit David Howell & current Tour pro Dan Bradbury take on Woodhall Spa!
The pair teamed up for a 9-hole scramble – how many birdies do you think they made?!
Hi, I’m David Howell here at the wonderful Wood Hall Spa Golf Club. I’m going to be playing with this fella Ben Bradbury and we’re going to go nine holes scramble around the Hotkin course. See how low we can go. You ready? I am. Let’s do it. I’m not sure I am, but we’re going to have a go. Cheers. There we go. There’s your ball, sir. Right. Come on. Then do let you chip it on. Are we trying to beat Are we trying to beat any record here? No, we’re just playing. We’re trying to We’re trying to beat I reckon we beat one a hole. One a hole is par, I reckon. Right. We can’t be out here making PS, can we? I’m going to think out of these lies. Going to have to run it. What are you doing, Brad? Dan, what are you doing, Dan? I’m going to land it. That’s not nice either. I’m going to land it probably 10 yards short this green. Okay. Land it just see where it’s a bit lighter. Yes. Just at the start of that. Come on then. Try that. Nearly a little high really, wasn’t it? Oh yeah. I’m going to try the same shot but with a 54. Yeah. Looks good. Oh. Oh. Thought I played that quite nicely. Somewhere in between the two, wasn’t it? Somewhere in between the two. So, it leaves us a nice putt, which is the whole point. Yeah. So, I’m seeing I’m seeing a little bit right to left, but I know that these greens don’t turn as much as you think. Okay. So, having played here quite a few times, they seem relatively flat. So, I’m seeing just outside the hole on the right. Oh, yeah. Okay. Well, I don’t see even that high really. Yeah. But great. Go. So, we go in the middle on right edge. You go with your You trust your feelings. Okay. You happy with me? You’re You’re the You’re the tall winner. I’m just an old duffer. Sorry. You didn’t trust your gut, did you? No, I didn’t. Terrible read by me. Okay. Low. Always low. for that one. This is what you’re known for though. Yeah. Oh, that was a nice P, wasn’t it? It was. It’s a good roll. That was a lovely Look at the pace, Dan. Great pure. Look at the pace. That’s where mine was lacking. One foot past, but we didn’t get a birdie. That’s not good. No. Rough start, but we’ll be fine. Four wedges away to play it, but look at me. Thoughts struggling. Oh, mate. I’m absolute pieces. What a putt I hit there. Bravo. What a putt. I I That was him out of the line. I gave him the wrong line. So, it’s problem is what’s interesting is Dan is never messing with his head or just That’s what’s interesting. You might You might never know. We’re on a team now here. You might never know. 440 hours a second here on the Hotchkin. It’s beautiful up the hill into the distance. Can’t quite see the pin from here. Um, but it’s out there somewhere. Um, just find the left side of the fairway, I think, with the driver. Shouldn’t leave much in for the big man here. It’ll be 99. What do you 9 160? Uh, yeah, about that. There we go. So, it should be that. You just nudge one up there and I’ll let rip. I’ve only got a nudge. That’s all I’ve got anymore. Oh my god. Stay out of there. Stay out. Oh, really? Blime me, that one good, was it? That’s um probably the deepest bunker in England. Excellent. That’s why I’ve got you as a partner. Okay, that’s pitched about 220 yards. That was not impressive. That sounds correct. Yeah, should be should be able to get over that right one. So take it a bit further right go. It’s way past that, isn’t it? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I don’t think that was in your There’s another one there, though. I think I think we’re all right. I think we’ll be fine. What we got? 130. 130. That’s right up my alley. 130 down the breeze. Are you going first or am I You’ll go first. It’s your drive. What’s it playing? I I’m playing it 120. Excellent. Because I think five are helping and a big bounce. Correct. That’s my So you play with a fade. So it’s going to start left with the flag. Is it just a hair left of it? And the green kind of slopes both ways to this one. Okay. Set. You’re right. Oh, it’s good shot. It’s a very good shot. It’s exactly what you said you were going to do. This looks nice as well. Thought I think I’ve outdone you there. Oh no. Don’t know. Yours is a bit long. I was happy with that though. What do you think? Is that good? Should be pretty straightforward with this one. You’re filming here. So I this is the first day really as Dan’s putting coach and he’s now got two feet for birdie. Would be an absolute abject disaster if he was to miss this live on camera. It be needs to concentrate or focus. You got me laughing now. Well, I know you focus. Come on few is my man. Very good. What a nice birdie. Yeah, we’ll take that. I would have held mine anyway. So, yeah. Yeah, we’ll give you we’ll give you yours down for a three. All right, we Okay, we can get a second shot from the fairway, can’t we? Well, we’ll see. This is only going to go about 230 this. Yeah, down the wind. 240. All right. Bit of run. 250 260 priy. I don’t think so. But anyway, we’ll see. You got those grip going. You got your grip splitting. See the big tree and the path. Yeah, that’s your fairway, right? So, flags right edge of the fairway. That’s making the fairway sound very narrow, but Oh, no. There’s loads of room left, but we want the tiger line. Come on. Yep. Perfect. That was all right, was it? Do you want me to driver then or I don’t mind hitting that? Whatever you want. I think I’ll hit this cuz there really isn’t a fairway up there with driver. It’s ganky, but it’ll do into win. It will do. It’s all right. Lesser of two evils. I love this club. Your little trusty. It’s just I mean, it’s a really random club. I got it made up sort of specifically. It’s three iron length. It’s a you know, it’s just goes to 15. Yeah. But the manufacturers are like, “Well, that’s really weird how you’ve got that set up. I love it. What is it? So, it’s a three. It’s a three iron. Three iron length. It goes, you know, whatever. For me, 210, 215, which is three length, but it’s so easy to hit. Yeah. It’s what you want there, isn’t it? High low. I’ve not really liked hybrids over the years, but that one’s cuz it’s short. It’s just lovely. Yeah. So, I’ve just started working with Howler. Um, I’ve I’ve worked with Robo for years. Robo obviously comes down a lot with the England setup. Um but yeah, just I mean it’s kind of a middle point. He’s obviously down in London. I’m up in Leeds, so it’s it’s perfect. Um and obviously the facilities here are fantastic and we knew it would be in great condition as it always is. Um so yeah, just a a great place for us to meet really in in the middle. So I was only in the squad for a couple of years to be fair. Um in the the men’s squad, they created that overseas squad. So I was in that I obviously spent five years over in America for university. Um but yeah, I did joined Graeme squad. Um we came down and did a bit of stuff in the summer and uh like a week’s camp here and there and stuff that is just amazing. Obviously, like I say, the facilities are fantastic. Um but yeah, I was also a member for two years. My dad and his mates were country members down here and uh student membership was only I think 200 quid at the time. So it was a no-brainer getting to play this place. Even if you only play it three or four times, it was worth it. So, um, yeah, in the winter you we just come down for the day sort of thing and it was it was amazing. Really love coming here and it’s easy drive and yeah, fantastic course. What do you reckon? How 181 181. Sort this through. U Well, we we have on slightly different agendas here. 181. Well, for me, this is going to be a seven iron cuz I hit that 170 yards and that’s 10 yards of help. Well, I’m the I’ve got it’s an eight for you, is it? I’ve got an eight, but I don’t know if it’s a full one because I’m thinking we only need this green kind of all slopes back towards that flag. So, I’m thinking land at 72 73ish, which might only be playing 65. So, I’m going to give that Looking at 15 yards of total help. Are you I think I think seven or eight of ground help and seven or eight of wind help. Okay. So, you’re going with what number? I’m going with a 165 shot. Okay. How far do you hit that club? 170. So, I’m taking I’m just going to grip it. Okay. That almost feels like there’s hurt now. Yep. I I agree. It’s a very nice shot. It was all over it, wasn’t it? Very nice shot. It’s just an all one would have done you, wouldn’t it? As it turns out, but I think you worked it out quite nicely. Yeah. So, I think a full one of them for you should be perfect. Not sure I’ve got a full one. I got to be honest. I’m not sure I’ve got a full one. No, that’s right. Come on. No back swing. No turn through. Oh dear. It’s on the front as well. Few average shots there. Yours was good. Yeah, but yours was good. Don’t don’t don’t knock that as average. Was a lovely shot. So with Hower working on my putting with me and I’ve worked with Steve now for over 10 years. So we just thought Steve had a bit of time off. So great way for them to meet and uh get to know each other a little better and thing is they want to work together. They don’t you see a lot of times some people not step on each other’s toes but they’re both part of my team. I want them to work well together. So that’s uh that’s the aim of the day. Bit appalling. Sorry I didn’t mean your py get your own putter. My punishment is kept my own. Supposed to be a pro. Well, he is a pro. He’s top class pro like me hobbling along. He’s funny. But we are here to watch him make long putts. So that’s good. Have you seen my tea, Matt? You haven’t seen my tea? This is what we’re using. Mark, my thing is cuz as we know, I’m just trying to help Dan Radbury here with his coat, with his stuff. But this is my little rider cup tea from 20 years ago that I found just to remind him who’s top dog. Yeah. Yeah. See what he’s got in his mind. Anyway, that’s that’s by the You weren’t filming that, were you? Okay. I’m going to tend it for you. Something I’d like you to consider having your caddy turn the flag. Okay. For obvious reasons. Yes. Yes. Yeah. Pick where you want to aim. You made me doubt myself again. And I shouldn’t have. And it’s short cuz I thought it was downhill. Yeah, it wasn’t downhill. No. You did see the brake though. I didn’t My initial looks I I didn’t see that brake. That really turned, didn’t it? Yeah. And it’s slower than it looks as well. Don’t forget your tea. Do you know what? Your second shot’s got us in real trouble. Well, this is your put this one. No, no, no. You am I taking the lead? Taking you’re taking responsibility. God, imagine being one under through three in a scramble. Well, if we hold I was about to say, imagine being level. Lovely. Here we go. It’s not a great start though, is it? Realist. Nice. Is that a water? It’s not a water tower, is it? I don’t know. But it’s pretty cool, isn’t it? Yeah. Right. How I’m trying to finish on the right hand bunker, am I? Yeah. Do you see the the big fat gauze push on the down there? Just to the right of that. Yeah. End of the path. Yeah. Just left. Just left of that. Perfect. About 240 250. Sit down. Set. Might just run into the into the heather. You can’t hit driver. No. Well, anyway. No, cuz there’s a bunker down the left that if I carry I’ll just end up in the right rough anyway. So, Oh, then let’s ching the most then like the one year before. straight at that bush and let him take it, I think. Well, that was higher than the one you hit before. You hit on the last. Yeah, I skanked it though, didn’t it? Yeah, you did. That should be pretty good. Nice, mate. Take that one. Good, aren’t you? Good. Even that might be in the semi on the right. It’s nice and firm out here. We’ve got 147, right? What do you reckon? Where’s the wind? Well, I’ll go first. I’m going to give you cuz you think it’s I think it’s straight off the left. I think it’s playing it numbertheast. I think it’s playing it number. Are you Are you starting this left of that flag? Even though there’s a 45. I’m just going to I’m going to hit I’m going to have to hit this hard to get there. So, that’s going to turn it right to left. So, I’m just going to aim at it. It’s like It’s a hair down. I’m trying to hit a hard one. Yeah. I like ideal. Come on, win. Stay right. Yep. Lovely shot that. It’s all right, was it? That should be very nice. Kind of did what I thought. Tweaked it left a little bit cuz I tried to give it a bit of a clip. Very nice. Hit it hard to left hand pins. It’s not a bad shout. One of my caddies taught me that. Really? You can. Yeah. I’ve never heard that before. I like that. We’ve hit it hard. You know, for me, I’m almost more likely to miss it left. So, I’m doing the opposite. I’m going to hit it smooth. Okay. What you got? Nine. Wedge. Got a nine. Yeah. I just don’t think a wedge. Yeah. Wedge is like 42, 43. So, I think I’m feather this in then, mate. Yeah. Just a nice high cut. I think the less said about that one the better. Well, I don’t know. The camera came on. I think more talk about you. That was not my moment. Yeah, I’ll just go get that one out the bunker. We’re fine. It’s not in the bunker, is it? The old boy on the dance floor. Exactly. Let me go for the green. That’s where we went wrong. But you trust yourself. I’m more important that you hit your putt where you want to. Yeah, that was a bit po, wasn’t it? Jumped a bit early and then jumped. I’m not sure if you didn’t start it a little bit left unless it went high. Well, I’m going to pick that up and hope that you can uh do better than that. Always good if it reaches the hole. And there’s there’s a rumor that most putts that reach a short don’t go in something. I don’t know. It’s a bit of an old wife’s tale or something. Oh, better put. We Thank you for angels. Hit another one. Well, I was I was here, wasn’t I? I’ll tap that one in. 54. But it’s a very very back pin. Excellent. So, we can’t go long with this one. Slight wheel for me. We can go next to the hole though. Yeah, we can. We can go next to the hole. So, what’s this? You hitting a little eight or I just eight, I think. Just Yeah, just a comfortable eight. Straight off the left again, isn’t it? Yeah. I mean, cuz I can I might feather this in just a little from left to right. Yeah. for you like a Brad Brieresque smooth eight mreen think about how to do that but I can do that. Oh he has as well go. He’s got to go. No that’s uh I think it’s within 15 ft. It’s a very respectable effort. I thought it was very good, wasn’t it? Yeah. I like the way I named the shot and pulled it off. Right. No pressure then. Nine for you. Yeah. Should be should be a perfect number. Okay. 55. Go. Go. Oh well, partner. One part. Whoa, whoa, whoa. That was an early call. Whoa. Hang on. Are you good with left or right? Are you? Well, it’s half the distance. Knock it in then, mate. Half the distance. We would have We would have hold mine. I was going to hold mine. What? You don’t think you’re going to hold this one? I think I will. I’m not so sure you will. full of the confidence in me. I’m assuming you’re like most competitive men that like to rally against people that doubt you. Oh, yeah. Brilliant putt. Do you want to have a No, it’s great. Good for me. Thoughts, questions, comments? I thought that was excellent. It was a good shot in and you hold the putt. You hit exactly where you aimed and you read it beautifully. Tremendous work. No line on your ball. Keep that one in. intuitive read nowhere and it was perfect. This could hold this back here. Par five. Massive bunker down the right. Okay. And the fairway slopes from right to left. So, but I’m not reaching the bunker on the left. I don’t I don’t think you’ll reach the one on the right to be honest. Okay. Well, that’s doubting Thomas, isn’t it? Well, I think it’s about 300. You look offended. down the wind. Nail it straight at the flag. Keep your rip. Hit the middle of the clubs. No. Oh, hang on. Oh, yeah. Spendly ramps. Oh gosh, you’re right. It didn’t get anywhere near the bunker. That’s all right, was it? That’s perfect. Golf is not a game of perfect. Brilliant. Very good. Guess that bunker might be further than 300 from here cuz I hit that one well. Yeah, it well. Yeah, but that will do. That’s a good hit there, mate. We have got 181. 181. That’s helping. It’s definitely helping. Bit off the right, but you go first. I’ll be at the rear. Okay. What are you going to do this time? I’m thinking I’m thinking based off the third hole. I’m thinking it’s a full eight. Yes. And I’m thinking it should just be perfect cuz coming in from about Yeah, it should right. It’s absolutely perfect. Not happening much. Yeah. Solid AR stray of the flag holding up against that little breeze with your fade. Yeah. I think five of help and five of Yeah. ground help. Still you you can’t hit this long. You can just just just button it. Is that short? Pick your partners. See? Or is that still got to pick your partners? Very good. Cheers. That was good, wasn’t it? Hey, that was proper shot. Work your body. You say work your body. That doesn’t look shabby at all. How worked his bum. Go on then. Oh yes. We should have done worse ball today. Another one’s just just come up shy. Better check with my partner before I pick his up this time. I’m seeing a cup right to left. Okay. Cup outside. Great. Didn’t quite start at a cup. Did I? I think fractions not. Oh, this is all right. All right. Tell me if I start this online. Where are you going? Cool. So, I’m going to do what you do. Try. I like a cup. That was a good p was it? That that didn’t move. Yeah. Still a bird. It’s power. Is that a par five? Is it? Yeah. Yeah. Par five. It’s a three under. Oh, I’m not sure about a birdie hole. I love this is probably one of my favorite holes on the course just because of how hard the driver is. I mean, at least today it’s downwind sometimes. If this one’s into it, it’s just brutal. Um, but yeah, I should be able to carry the bunker down the right today. So, it’s not too bad. And then hopefully wedge it on from there. Uh, the bunker down the right there is how far is about 260 270 carat. Well, I hit it over there then. Okay. Well, I’m in place so you can hear it again. You what? Sorry. Pick mine up on the way to yours. Yeah. Get that on camera. No, I don’t think we’ll be doing that. I think you’ll be coming and getting it. Might as well wander over. Didn’t drive three and a half hours to not embarrass. A walk of shame. There we go. That’s interesting, isn’t it? because you were all all giving me quite a lot of abuse about how old and decrepit I am, but as it turns out, mine was the longest drive. Well, there’s a nice downs slope back there just short of that bunker. Let’s not get into any semantics or detail. Pick it. I’ll get it for you. No, no, no. You’re fine. You You stay there. You’re fine. We’ll go up to yours. Come on. 119. Was a hell of a bouncing. 119. Yep. That is a number that can only work for me. You going to set the target? I’ll go first. Yeah. 119. Go with the 55. That looks nice, sir. It was nice. Looks very nice because it was nice. Good shot. Cute. Might not be needed on this hole. What we going with? And I use positions for my wedges. So I’m going to go with a five, which is a hands to shoulder 50°. Lovely. Should be 112. Little bit of help and a bounce. 120. That’s the thought. So a 112 shot. Yeah. Carries to 115. One hop. Check. Oh no, it’s popped. set. Yeah. Good distance. Nice shot there, sir. Thanks, mate. I’ll pick this one up. Yeah. Well, that’s that’s very in very impressive. So, you got five numbers. I said three. Little curler. I’m going just outside the left. firm. Very well. It was a good read, but it’s in. It was a good read. We have 188 yards, right? Winds in and off the left. So, I think it’s playing about 200. I’m thinking we want to be We’ve got to get this at least pin high. Okay. This for you, isn’t it? You’re going with a six iron and you’re going with a nice I’ve got a smooth five. Yeah, cuz it’s in off the left. Okay. I know it’s gone down a little now, but I think there’s definitely a bit of hurt. Okay. Yeah. And you can’t be short of this pin. All right. Great. So, there’s lots of room long and left of it. So, I’m starting at middle of the green and just going to let it drift in. Yeah. On the flip side, we are trying to birdie every hole. So, if you could it stiff, that would be great. Well, yeah. But if I if it if I get it up a little bit, the wind catches it. It should go stiff. Okay. That’s kind of the plan. But the miss with this is going to be 30 ft left. That’s left edge of the green. That’s not very good. Old man’s going to stand up and get it. Jesus. Do all the work here. No wonder your back. Well, I can’t reach then. Can I with this? What have you got? Five. I think you can. I’ve tried to take quite a bit off that. It’s over there with me. Just lost the face a bit, didn’t I? Easy when you said that. Where you going? So, I’m thinking thinking it’s a little bit left to right at the start. Okay. And then I’m thinking quite a bit right to left. So, overall, I’m probably a couple of feet, three feet out. Lovely fly line, was it? It was just a little uh rubbish of pace. Take what you want out of it. Actually, I wouldn’t say it was rubbish of pace. Joking aside, it’s not bad, was it? 10% rule. How far have you got? I’m 4 ft short. Well, this is what 70 footer. Yeah, probably more. Yeah, 50 to 60. Well, so inside six feet, 4T you’re about right. Yeah. Just a little bit slow for us, aren’t they? Really good. Off you go. Yeah. Boom. Right. So, I’m It’s par five, 580, but downwind. We’ve got a cross bunkers of probably 320. Okay. So, I’m just going to hit a low one that runs just short of them. And then another one onto the green. Excellent. It’s a good choice. Straight at the flag. Okay. A low one. Yep. Little draw. Happy with that? Yeah, very. Oh, really? You were going for the low draw, were you? You normally paid it. That’s That’s caught the wrong side of the fairway, the interrain bit. So, it’ll be miles back, but it’s in play, right? Oh, might do. That’s why there’s two of us. We’re in playing a scramble. Come on then. Terrible club choice off the tea, by the way. Really? Yeah. So, three yards back from the bunkers. Well, I’ve hit a 3-wood into the bunkers before, so I didn’t think that was the right place. Realized you were going to bring your scar tissue from nine years with you. Aha. That’s what I’ve been doing. So 305 to the pin. About 400 yards short. 305. If we land If you land it short right, it all kicks in. I think you got it. Come on. You can do this. What What can you push through with 280 in downwind? Probably. Yeah. I’m going to hit it high and hard and excellent. Like throwing that, mate. This is the drawer that you asked for earlier. I might need to sit. All right. Front edge. I smell money. Front edge. That was pretty good, wasn’t it? I’m not sure. There’s not much point me going, is there? In fairness. Hit driver. Run one up there. Now, where were we? Just here. Yeah, just there. Hang on. Now he’s trying a new Look at him. He’s watching it. He’s watching it. He has as well. More than one more than one way to skin a cat, isn’t there? I forgot. Very nice. Still got it. Jeez. See, we seen that Sunnydale in the senior Open. Maybe. New grip. Work your body. I wasn’t thinking about working the body on that one or that club face flipping, man. Oh, I didn’t want to. He wanted to work with me. No. Well, we’ve known each other for a while and um uh well, I don’t know. I don’t know if I can help him, but you know, I was renowned as a good putter and Dan feels like he’s not been holding as many cuts as as possible. Probably the, you know, maybe the the weakest part of what is a really strong game. So, uh just trying to give him a few insights about the way I went about it over my uh 30 years on tour and maybe something will resonate with with them, which means, you know, the odd more putt will drop. Nothing more than that really. You still love the game cuz you’re on talking about it. Yeah, I love it. Yeah, I’m a golf addict. I’m not very healthy at the moment. I’ve got bad foot and back and definitely I’m not the healthiest of nearly 50 year olds. Um, fire as I might, which is a shame because I love playing. I love the game. Um, and everything about it really. I love the people, the places, and uh, and all things golf cult. So, yeah, lovely to still be involved in many different ways. Well, take mine, but yours was a great shot. Thank you, mate. Worked out. It was quite clever, wasn’t it? Got the most out of it. Yep. There we go. Right. Be nice to drop one of these. Need to try and give them a chance though, don’t we? Yeah. So, bit of a wide but good pace. Lovely pace. I think you started left of that. I think I started it where it’s ended. Pretty much. Pretty much. Yeah. Go and turn this flag for me. I will do. just unless I might want to jump. But it definitely The nice thing about standing there, you can see it. All I’m thinking is it’s starting at me. You kind of get a feel for it. Yeah, I think it start did start just just left of you. Yeah. Whether it was jump or not, I’m not sure. But looks pretty good. Somewhere in between the two. going to turn. It’s not ideal. Just thought I’d let you have the glory, you know. Well, maybe it’s straight. It’s your dream. Yeah. Well done. Hey, another birdie. What do we get round in? Is that five under? Thank you, sir. Cheers. Five. Five under. Five under in the end. Very good. Miss. Very good. Five under par. Nine hoes on the hutchkin. Beautiful sunny day. Dan Bradbury, David H.

Love David and Dan but for goodness sake England Golf – try a bit harder! Get shot tracers and perhaps someone filming the ball landing on the green to become a little more of a professional production?
I agree with Mr. Holmes.
Nice format, but it would be good to see more of this wonderful course. How about putting a camera on a pole for each shot to see the challenges, with a little bit of description of the thinking for the shot? And a series on some more of our wonderful UK courses?
