If you’re a fan of looking to the pros in order to glean some gear insight for your own game, you may already know that nearly 80 percent of Tour pros used a blended iron set — that is, their iron arsenal includes more than one model.
While many recreational golfers may opt to play different brands or models of wedges, hybrids or fairway woods, many don’t consider breaking up their iron set (generally clubs from PW all the way through 4-iron) with different models. And yet, that’s what the majority of top-level players are doing. But why?
“Blended sets of irons are sets that feature two different models that typically offer two different forgiveness levels,” says True Spec’s Peter Weber. “Commonly, this is done to offer distance consistency in the longer irons, and precision consistency in the shorter irons.”
7 signs that a blended iron set could benefit your game

With this in mind, should you consider mixing up your bag with a blended iron set? Maybe.
“Mid- to lower-handicap players tend to seek the benefits of blended sets of irons,” Weber said.
Real-time examples of blended sets currently in play include U.S. Ryder Cup team member Russell Henley, and Charles Howell III, who recently spoke with GOLF’s Johnny Wunder about his blended set.
“His 7-iron down to his wedges are set up from a model and loft gapping setting to hit precise yardages,” Weber said of Howell. “His 6-iron on up are set up to avoid making double bogey.
“The most common break in the bag I see during fittings is between the 5- and 6-iron,” Weber continued. “Players want the added forgiveness and launch in their longer irons, and more shot shaping options in their lower irons.”
If that sounds like a framework that could benefit your game, Weber recommends checking out the following blend-friendly iron models below. You can learn more and shop now by clicking the links. And to dial in the ultimate set configuration, find a club-fitting location near you at True Spec Golf.
