Building My DREAM LAB Putter – I MADE A MISTAKE!

Lab Golf have been slowly dominating the world of putters for quite some time now. And a few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to travel to their HQ and get fitted for the brand new HS model. Now, I found this incredible. I thought I’d found the perfect spec in the perfect putter. And I even then started to roll some putts in, take it out on the golf course, and play really well with the man himself, Sam Hong. As you can see, things were really starting to hot up. However, I may have made quite a big mistake with my build. Let’s go get this. What do we get on the top, Liam? Because I’m I I don’t know. I feel like I want something quite subtle. I want this to be like a stealth spec, but I do like the idea of a T on there, but I don’t I saw yours yesterday with a nice thin line. I thought they looked really good. Mhm. I really like the thin line uh for that reason. It doesn’t over complicate things. It’s just this is a reference point of where I’m kind of aiming. Yeah, I’m not a very big I don’t use a line on the ball. I don’t like focus in on a target overly. I like to just like read the putt and then from here speed is so much more important than line. So like feeling the speed to me is kind of the and then from here like that’s the speed but then if say uphill putt like can I be a bit more aggressive on it and like just feel it out from here. A bit like if you’ve got like a a 40 foot side winding eagle put that the pace is vital, isn’t it? Yeah. Just pace is just really important for the line that you But I must admit it is really really nice to have a a club built by someone who’s actually p say a very very good golfer. So you kind of get it. Whereas I think sometimes when you do maybe go and get a club built from someone who’s not played to a really high level then it’s it’s you can asking questions that nobody really knows the answer to. Whereas you’re really kind of totally and like I just through over the years of experience like talking to the best players in the world about stuff, they have better answers than I do cuz they’ve experienced more stuff and they’ve seen more things. And I think that’s kind of the the approach that I like to take out there is use these people as just feedback loops like just continuously learning from these guys cuz they have the best feedback. And even if it’s not the best feedback for everybody, it’s at least there’s a market that they that they hit. there’s a reason that they think that it’s either good, bad, ugly, whatever they think. And if they think that way, there’s obviously a lot more people that think that way. So helping trying to solve one of their problems is could be potentially solving great problem for a large majority of people. So um yeah, it’s really far from the and a lot of people won’t understand how important the sight line is, but Oh, he’s got a great answer. Knocked it out of the park. Little little baseball reference for you there. Let’s go. Do you So do you want the tea? Should we have a look? You’ve got the chart, haven’t you? We do have a chart. Yeah, we’ve got a chart. We’ve got a bunch of options. And the one of the cool things for us too is because because we laser the sight lines. Um it’s done through a graphic image. So like a digital image is what’s getting lasered onto this. So the ability that we have to be able to tweak those say like what I was telling you before like my the line that I have is a is a 1 mil line versus our standards 2 mil. We offer the 1 mil. It’s the sight line that we have on our website. But, uh, being able to say that you wanted the tea right there, but the tea that we have is the 2 mil lines everywhere, potentially moving those to 1 mil and just seeing what that likes cuz that could look a little better for you. Yeah. So, we’ve actually made a video today making Bobby’s putter as well. So, we have been in this room already. And what I find really interesting is just how Liam knows how to cover every single base of this club build. And you say that as though a club builder wouldn’t know that, but even down to all this stuff, like you look at this. I have no idea looking at the screen what any of it means, but it’s nice to see someone who can uh cover every single base. Want to try? So, you’d actually be much faster with building this uh T-side line. Instead of the lines being 2 mil thick, 1 mil thick. Yeah. So, I was just going to recreate. This is the guy, by the way. I was going to recreate and uh just make him one and do it again. But you are much better at it than I. Okay. So, this is the thing is you know the skills enough that you can do it if you need to. Delegation is key, but know that you’re not as good as the people that actually do it. Yeah. Yeah. So the beauty of it when like say we get Evan to do it or just one of the guys from the laser team to do it, they know for all of the model head models, they know center measurements and they know all of the measurements like on reference to the the axis of the actual laser, not so much this program. Yeah, cuz the top lines are different thicknesses, aren’t they? Yeah, cuz there’s different amount of onset to each head. Each head’s a little bit different size. So, we have different setup blocks to be able to accommodate each head cuz we want the the head to be as close to the middle of under the laser as possible cuz that’s when it’s going to laser the straightest. And then soon as it starts going around, it just lasers off. It still lases the exact measurements of the thing. It’s just where the projection of that will be a little bit different. Genius. It’s absolute genius. As a wise man once said, Steve Chambers and I’ll be watching. This is going to look so cool. Hightech trick here. just color over it. It looks like a fresh head. The guy, it’s amazing how many of those heads are just like all these down there just covered in black Sharpie. [Music] That does look good, doesn’t it? Could we make it This sounds really But could could we make that line narrower so it’s almost like the size of this? Yeah. Size of the the GG with double I feel like I’m being really I think I think that’s Feel bad cuz the bus is 9 I think it’s 9.25 each thing that mill was that line. Doesn’t have to be exactly that. Just like a little I think I know the measurement. I think it’s like 20 and a half mil. Yeah, I think it’s like 20 and a half. 20.2 miles 3 mil. No.3 of a mil. Oh.3 of a mil. Look at this guy. What’s your name? Sorry. Evan. Evan. What’s your name? Love your work. James. James. Nice to meet you. Love your work. Rob. Thank you. Bobby Buckets. Bobby Buckets. After yesterday’s outing at Turkey. Bobby Buckets. Yeah. It’s one thing I’ve learned. It’s It’s really valuable to hire smart people. This is going to look so good. Yeah. That look Oh, yeah. That’s the one. That’s cool. That’s the one. I like that. [Music] And then do you want in the same spot as Bubbies? The Billy. Um, yeah. Oh, please. Yeah. Billy. Yeah. Really? Right there. Yep. This is one of the best days of my life. [Music] That looks sick. That looks beautiful. That looks amazing. You can hold it. That’s yours. That’s man. That’s going to hold some serious yardage. That one. It’s going to beat Liam next time we come out here. Most likely. Send a picture to the wife. She’ll like that. Thank you very much. Cheers. Appreciate your time. Thank you. Oh. Oh yeah. Beautiful. And the matte, the matte black with the mat here. Oh. So then a little surprise at the end is going to look very nice. Cool. So now that’s just going to put them down and let them dry. I’m getting really excited now. So, we have kind of chopped and changed this just for a kind of he’s a very very busy man, Liam, so to help him with his time. Um, and we’ve just seen Bobby’s reveal literally quite luxury. It was a pun that wasn’t it. But, um, sorry Rob, but make sure you check that video out. That video might be out now. It might be coming out maybe tomorrow. It might be the week after. Make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss it cuz it is ridiculous. But back to me. But now we got your bad boy. Back to me. What are the chances that Billy uh Billy ends up with this thing? He’s like, “Oh, it’s got my name on the day.” Probably quit it pretty pretty high. I don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s got my name on it. I don’t see uh James anywhere. For now, your life changes. You go from having your own initials and stuff to like your dogs or your cats or your kids. Cat dad. It’s fun. Perfect time to have the picture of your um Yeah. office insert. That looks good. It’s going to look really good this, isn’t it? Yeah, that looks really good. Proper stealth out. I like that little tick. Yeah, I think it’s a nice one that nice and subtle. It’s interesting because a lot of people don’t understand how length kind of dictates line so much. Yeah, totally. Absolutely. It’s huge. Like the relationship between length and lang is the biggest relationship in golf. Yeah, that guy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That’s the one, isn’t it? That’s the bad boy. Always gone with white in the past. And I’m not the the guy who will like wipe the grips down afterwards. Yeah. I’m not that guy. See the difference between this? Now, the reason I asked that is like your cut even though your end of grip length is the same as Bobby’s. Mhm. Your cut length is a quarter inch longer. Really? Cuz the butt caps cuz that’s got that the superstr. Yeah. Which adds depth to the butt cap cuz it’s got to get that screw portion into it. But this it doesn’t have a any sort of it’s just got a cap normal cap in. There’s quite a big difference as well. Quarter inch. Yeah. Absolutely. And like if you don’t pay attention while you’re if you just cut it to a lens always just go cut quarter cut quarter cut quarter, you’ll get a superstroke and then you’ll be like, “Oh my god, why is this a quarter an eighth of an inch long?” Or Williams as good at splitting the line as I’m splitting the G. But I’m curious to see how because of the riser lengths are so different. Mhm. how shaft stiffness plays a part in that because we’re now say like this you got the same same static same overall length. Yeah. Different cut length that we just talked about whatever but because the your rises from like it could be an inch longer from like the 75 to the 65 like that extra inch of shaft the play. Yeah. How does that It’s interesting what we’re talking about though. We’re talking about the lie angle. So the risers are all different lens, four different line angles. And that’s the beauty about the fitting process behind these putters. There’s not many brands that to be honest will offer such a varied line angle in. But it’s such an important factor. Absolutely. And I love that when we did the fittings the other day and especially in Bob’s fitting where Sam was present as well. It was more right Bob, you get in your posture, let’s talk about how you want to put and then let’s build your put to those specs. So really, really interesting, which is amazing cuz now you can we can set you up for you to move the biomechanically the way that you want to move and that your body’s built to move cuz like if I’m trying to the worst thing ever is like, “Hey man, go putt like someone else.” Yeah. Yeah. Like that’s not how you used I used to try put like Brandon Stenka and Steve Stricker. Yeah. It’s like that then you think, well actually Stenker’s probably there and Stricker’s probably there. So it’s like just you’re a different person, aren’t you? But it’s s but like also like their range of motion in their wrist is different. their range of motion in their elbows, their shoulders, their back, their tor like their hips. Everything is different and certain people have certain restrictions and certain people have certain freedoms. So like if your superpower is flexibility and you can get into a into a position where is comfortable for you that allows you to make a clean move at the ball that’s that’s going to keep the putter on plane, going to arrive the putter square at impact. Why would I change? Like why would I I’m not going to I want you to be able to do that as easy as possible. Yeah. not as technically perfect as possible. I want you to be able to do the same thing as often as you can without you even thinking about it. Yeah. Because that’s how we’re going to get consistency. And then consistency is the most important part of consistency is the one, isn’t it? And it’s funny like a lot of people you’re saying it’s just because it’s lying well balanced and the face is staying square does not mean that it’s going to make every part. It means that we’re just trying to give you a better chance. No, but I must admit we have um played a couple of rounds out here with you and with Sam and some of the puts I wasn’t even impressed. I mean, you’re always impressed with the puts you hold, but it’s the ones that we missed. Yeah. Like it was just a bad read or maybe the pace was off and we’ve literally horseshoeed more putts than I can remember. If you horseshoe in puts, it’s probably look more than anything at that stage, but Yeah. Yeah. You’re not far off. Yeah. Or you can just hold a 50 foot eagle put like I had uh I had this the pro giving me a line. That was all it was. Tell you what, it was super handy having her out there. I am Batman. can look so sick there. I’ve started saying the word sick cuz we’ve been in America too long. Yeah, that’s also me though as well. I got I used to get so much for it all the time cuz when sick putters sick golf is a thing. Oh yeah. Like oh dude that’s sick and like no it’s not. It’s a that’s my alarm to remind me to eat lunch. Imagine being that busy have to have an alarm to make you eat lunch. Like lunch is always like the forefront of my mind I feel like. Thank you. See next to me. See what you think about swear. Yeah. Bang on. That’s two pulls you’ve done to the end of it. Bang on. Yeah. What did Bobby say? Taking it to the spa, the salon. Yeah. How many times you got your haircut at the salon? Never. No, but I went for a phase to do it myself. Actually, I uh I’ve cut my hair myself. Yeah. Since I was 17. Really? I moved to the States and I was just such a tight ass when I was a kid. I was like, “Fuck, I’m not paying someone 20 bucks to cut it.” So, I bought some clippers when I was with the Phillies and just like, “Oh, I’m with I’m with 150 guys. Who cares?” And so I cut it and I actually didn’t even butcher it that bad. It wasn’t good, but it wasn’t like I had to cut the whole thing off. I mean, I did mine during co is what you had time. Yeah. You had your eight weeks. Yeah. Yeah. I’m really excited about this. It’s going to look absolutely crazy. It’s interesting how that’s the the method. I I thought it’d be epoxy to put the face on as well. Yeah. I mean, this stuff is like you can not put screws in there and it will not Yeah. not budge. The thing to me that’s crazy is when we were doing all of like all the testing and R&D for it all um how many materials are out there now that are just like absurdly sticky. Yeah. And also have like So the cool thing about this one has also got sound dampening properties too. So it’s got some absorption which helps with the sound feel uh of just no metal metal contact. Yeah. Oh, stop it. I’m out. I’m going to the airport. So stable. It’s really good. I absolutely love that. It’s good. So good. What do you think? I mean, he’s made the last two or he’s actually aimed it, so can’t complain. I feel like it just allows me to like I feel like I’m tapping a nail with a hammer almost with that line, you know? Just a Yeah. Yeah. My brother thinks I’m crazy. Thank you, mate. Thank you for everything. I really, really enjoyed that. Pleasure. Absolute pleasure. Always guys, if you’ve enjoyed that, make sure you do smash that subscribe button below. I’m taller than you now as well. Hey, need some. We’re miracles. Goodbye.

  1. Since using the LAB putter my putting is currently best part of my game feel so confident on alignment and roll big thumbs up for this brand👍♥️

  2. We gotta talk about the "fake" labs being sold by the thousands, because they are indistinguishable from the real ones. My buddy bought a DF3 for a thousand dollars, I got my "fake" for 200, no difference whatsoever.

  3. Have you tried that alignment aid that is on the thumbnail? Been trying to find videos on it, sort of reminds me of the spider tour X alignment.

  4. Even after reading your replies I’m clueless as to what the mistake was. Please enlighten me. Great vid by the way.

  5. Get them from china, they sold it china just basically had the blue print and were made there, might be copied, but its the same putter. Temu for me i think then, 😂

  6. I bought a mezz from Temu only issue i have with it is the sound it makes when hitting the ball. Obviously the head is hollow and it sounds awful

  7. I think of myself as a pretty average putter but since buying a L.A.B. I'm so much more confident and that's leading to less putts and lower scores. Rolls so well, so forgiving and easy to line up. Just brilliant for me.

  8. Now that I know LAB sold out to a French private equity company, I will buy a knock off without hesitation. Never buy a LAB putter now. But for now, I ordered a custom putter from sub70 golf. Can’t wait until it gets here.

  9. I know a few of the guys at L.A.B personally. Encounter a lot of them at State AM events etc. These guys are always willing to go above and beyond to hook people up. I appreciate what they do for the local golfing community and they really do a lot for junior players. Lot of respect

  10. If I got this sort of personal service, get fitted, customise it, get to watch my putter get built, walk out with the new putter same day, It would make it easier to fork out the $750 for one of these.

  11. So you changed into the Diamana shaft?
Is that because the insert is a different material or just black ss?
Did you get a sneaky new material for your insert James?

  12. Just watched it back and Liam's putter (blue head – he tried to cover it up with his hand) has a totally different insert.
Not sure on material but the milling is different.
How long before the different insert options are available for us mere mortals?

  13. I’m interested in the length being based off the Superstroke. Would 35.5” really be 35.25” if you decide to change from a Superstroke?

  14. This is really awesome what you do James, their putters have really fascinated me and I even custom ordered an HS myself . Not a lot of videos showing the actual work that goes into these like this

  15. Apart from the riser, mine is smaller, that putter being made and shipped to Italy. I had just bought a TM spider proto, beautiful and then…….you bastard 😂😂😂

  16. Crazy – James gets his while he waits…… I ordered one and it took over 7 weeks. I suppose regular customers are valued less than James.
