As team Europe gears up for next week’s RDER Cup, one familiar face will be missing from the dressing room. Captain Luke Donald has chosen to stick with much of the formula that brought Europe victory at Marco Simone in 2023, retaining four of his trusted vice captains, Thomas Bjorn, Eduardo Molinari, Jose Maria Olazabel, and Francesco Molinari. The one change, Nicholas Koulsards has been replaced by Sweden’s Alex Nornin. for Colarts, a Rder Cup winner at Medina in 2012. The decision stings. “Yeah, very disappointed because it’s a competition that I live for,” he told the Sky Sports Golf Podcast. “It’s basically been the only thing that will get me out of bed for the last couple of years.” “Extremely disappointed.” “Yes, but the captain is in charge. There are no hard feelings about the decision. Out of respect for the competition and those representing us, I would always back them. The Belgian admitted that what hurts most is not being able to contribute to the team effort. I would have loved to be there and more than that, I would have loved to help. He said it’s the fact that I’m not able to help that makes me disappointed and sad. Still, Karts won’t be entirely absent. He plans to spend a few days with the squad early in the week before switching into his role with Sky Sports for the weekend coverage. I would always back the team. I would always wish them good luck. I would always think the world about the guys representing us, and I hope we keep the cup, he added. Fans will remember the 42year-old rallying the home crowd with a thunderclap two years ago. This time though, the European lineup remains largely unchanged with only Raasmus Hodgegard replacing his twin brother Nikolai. Everyone’s comfortable with one another, Colarts explained. You go there with that familiar feeling. Everybody knows what they have to do and where their place is. They say never change a winning team. It’s no coincidence. The challenge is different this time because you need to stay tighter as a group in front of the New York crowd. But for what I see, they’re doing everything to be ready. Team Europe has even been preparing with VR headsets to simulate hostile atmospheres. And Colarts believes the American fans will dish out plenty of noise, not just to the visitors, but also to their own team. The first day in 2012, I heard nothing because I was in the zone, he recalled. I realized the only thing that mattered was those four golf balls. Whatever Joe is shouting after six beers on the sixth fairway has no impact on the game. It does, but it shouldn’t. It’s just an outside element. The New York crowd is different. They love entertainment. They have no problem telling you how they feel, but they’ll also have no problem giving stick to their own players. As the 45th edition of the RDER Cup draws near, Colarts may not be inside the ropes, but his passion for the event and for team Europe remains as strong as ever.
