A golf club has teed off a green investment, opening an all-weather driving range built with 1,500 tons of sustainably produced sand.

Hunley Golf Club, set against the dramatic coastal backdrop of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, now offers golfers a year-round facility on its upgraded outdoor range, thanks to recycled sand supplied by Scott Bros, a Teesside-based recycling specialist.

The sand was processed at Scott Bros’ £6 million wash plant in South Bank, one of the UK’s largest “urban quarries,” which converts construction and excavation waste into British Standard certified sand and aggregate.

Greg Fitzmaurice, general manager and course manager at Hunley Golf Club, said: “Scott Bros’ recycled sand helped us create a high-quality driving range field with excellent drainage, while reducing our ecological impact and staying within budget.

“It’s a great asset for members, visitors, and the wider community – and reflects our long-term commitment to providing golfing excellence in a responsible way.”

The previous driving range had poor drainage and could only be used for eight to ten months of the year.

The new facility features improved playability and aesthetics, with mounding to direct surface water into drainage gulleys, enabling year-round use.

It also includes new target zones, nine covered bays, and Power Tee technology.

The range is fully floodlit and open until 9pm.

Peter Scott, director at Scott Bros, said: “Hunley is not only one of the North East’s most scenic courses, but also one of the most forward-thinking.

“By using our recycled sand, it’s reducing reliance on finite natural resources and supporting a more sustainable future for the sport.”

Bob Borthwick, also a director at Scott Bros, said: “It’s rewarding to see our investment in sustainable technology helping enhance such a prestigious facility.

“Golf clubs like Hunley are proving that top-quality development and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.”

Hunley Golf Club is known for its sustainable approach to course management.

Located on coastal moorland, the 27-hole club offers three distinct layouts – Morgans, Imperial, and Jubilee – designed for varying abilities.

Scott Bros has also supplied recycled sand to other golf courses in the region, including Teesside Golf Club in Thornaby and Seaton Carew Golf Course for use in improving drainage, turf health, and surface firmness.
