BURLINGTON, N.C. – Avery Nordman continued her strong start to her college career, Abigail Sheldon climbed nearly 30 spots in the standings, and Longwood women’s golf wrapped up the Elon Invitational in fifth on Tuesday afternoon.

Sheldon had the low round on the day for the women with a two-under 69, giving the team an under-par round in each of the three rounds of golf at the Par 71 Alamance Country Club.

NOTABLE RESULTS:

Longwood’s fifth-place finish had them four shots back of Appalachian State, who fired the low round of the tournament to climb up five spots. The Lancers posted a 287-287-294—868 (+16) on the strength of their work on Par 4s. The team was one strike back of James Madison for best score on such holes at the event. The team’s 868 broke the scoring record of 873, set in the spring of 2012.

Sheldon led the way in the round, leaping 29 spots up the standings into a tie for 16th. Her final round saw her post five birdies, including three in her final seven holes, and she finished with a 78-72-69—219 (+6). She was the best player in the field on Par 4s, with the sophomore the only player in the field with a scoring average under par on such holes.

Meanwhile, Nordman stayed inside the top 10 with a 72-68-75—215 (+2) that saw her tie for ninth. She finished the tournament with seven birdies. Nordman also tied for het second-best scoring average at the event on Par 4s, finishing even.

Madison Lehr tied for 13th behind a solid final round of 72, giving her a three-round tally of 72-74-72—218 (+5). She had an eagle on the Par 4 seventh in her second hole of the round, and she also matched Nordman on Par 4s in the tournament, finishing even on the holes.

Chiara Wippert tied for 27th behind a three-round tally of 69-73-78—220 (+7). She tied for second in the field, with Nordman, with 40 pars.

Caroline Tragesser tied for 55th with a 74-74-81—229 (+16). She tied for seventh in the field with 37 pars over 54 holes.

WHAT THEY SAID:

“A second top five finish with a 294 team score is still a respectable day!” said Longwood Head Coach Megan Weaver. “After yesterday—and dropping a 74 in the second round—I had high hopes for today. Abigail was really locked in, getting birdie after birdie, and progressively improved throughout the tournament. Madison holed out from the fairway on her second hole, going three under after two holes. That added some pressure, and she got a little ahead of herself, but she maintained great composure and finished with a solid round and tournament!”

“We didn’t do as good a job today in playing for the ‘miss’ or targeting the best part of the green,” Weaver added. “The other challenge was Par 3s, which are typically a strong suit for us. But all around, the team played great golf this week!”
