Had someone explain to me that the handicap system is your potential not your score which makes more sense

  2. UncleEvander

Course rating must be super difficult for those scores to yield a 6

  3. CompleteDetective367

As a 6 this is almost spot on, but it’s been a long time since that 90. Until I make this statement of course.

  4. My CH is a 6, GHIN is 5.4 and that’s about right. My spread this season was 69-94.

Depends on the rating of the course. For example, shooting 80 at Bethpage black from back tees is very different to shooting 80 at a random local course playing under 6,000y.

In fact, just checked and a 6 handicap would be level to their handicap on the Bethpage black tips, if they shot 86.

Everyone taking this post too literal. The point isn’t to calculate the exact handicap. It’s shedding light on how numerous people misperceive what a 6 handicap shoots (people generally assume a score of 6 over par). In reality, there’s a variance of scores that show both low rounds (upper 70’s) and high rounds (90).

    Potential vs. the scorecard.

My fairly friendly home course? Plenty rounds in the high 70s/low 80s.

The crazy “cliff courses” in St. George, UT/Mesquite, NV? I’d rather not discuss it, but my scores are scary-close to the green fees I pay down there.

Please don’t, this is how we get those “my 9 iron goes 160 in the air” guys who shoot 100+ and say they can get down to single index some days.

  9. garnsy10

I’m a 5.3 lefty. Lowest this season (and ever) is 74. Highest this season is 88. On average between 78-82

  10. Spiritual-Tadpole342

It’s a measure of potential not consistency.

You get to toss 60% of your scores.

  11. bruyeremews

    I’m a 4.6. Just went up from 3.5 after putting in a 76.

    My recent scores are 76, 77, 36 (9), 41 (9), 39 (9), 82, 80, 75, 73, 77, 83, 81, 82, 75, 72. Different courses with different ratings and slopes.

  12. ExcuseIntelligent539

My last recorded handicap was 6.2, and this is spot on with maybe some wilder swings for me. I am probably a 9 or a 10 right now. I need to get the GHIN going again.

  13. mingomcgoo

It’s about right , I’m currently just over 10 HC and would shoot similar scores but I play “easier rated” courses so my cap won’t drop much 🤷

  14. Yes. I’m a 1.5 and I fired a healthy 85 the other day. Even after posting my score on GHIN my index remained the same.

It’s a weird algorithm they’ve got going on at the USGA. I’d love to know more about how it works.

Yup. Your handicap is the average differential between your score and the rating/slope on your best half scores. So your best 10 out of the last 20. And it rotates on the last 20.
It’s to determine a best guess on what you’ll shot at your best. How consistent a player is trying to get those low 10 closer to your average score. Like all the 78’s to the left. If that guy plays a 72 rating course all the time he plays to a 6 every time and will be a 6. But normal people blow up occasionally. So any score higher than the worst one of the half best won’t count. It’s in the worse half. But that worse half days a lot about the player.
When I give a student a handicap conversation, I tell them to keep track of your average score. It’s a bit more telling.

  16. Howy_the_Howizer

Yup best round was one under par, worst was 86. Sitting right at the 5 right now.

  17. UnitedDoubt7596

Exactly: had a friend tell me I’m not a 2 handicap because I shoot 78 all the time.

  18. sonofabunch

Well since I shoot double those numbers I’ll just consider myself a 12 handicap then.

  19. UnflushableNug

I shoot the right side almost verbatim. Should I not be saying I’m a 13?
