Thailand’s Danthai Boonma clearly likes the Shinhan Donghae Open. He has played in the prestigious Korean event four times and comfortably made it through to the weekend on each occasion. In 2022 he even had a run at the title before tying for 14th.
Today, in his fifth appearance, the affinity showed once more as he took a share of the first-round lead, shooting a five-under-par 67.
The fact that it’s a different venue this year – the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Incheon – had little effect. Two birdies in his last three holes as the day drew to a close saw him share top spot with Korean Jiho Yang.

[Music] Well, good afternoon and a very warm welcome to day one coverage of the 4th staging of the trianctioned Shinhan Dongh. Here’s what’s already transpired here on day one. This was a lovely way to end his day. A birdie putt at the difficult ninth hole accessible front hole location. That’ll be an opening round of 70. and Richard T. Lee who has been in hot form in recent times. Not the best of approach there at the par five. So this will be just a par and at the par 38. Strong par three, the longest par three on the golf course. And with the pin tucked on the right portion, all the players they look to bail out all this left hill, but overly cautious will leave himself a difficult par saving attempt. That’ll be his first bogey of the round to drop back to three under par. This is the man that sets the pace at the moment. Jiho Yang, dual card holder on the Korean and Japanese tours. Ogie free in his opening round. That was a great pass saving putt back at the fifth. And this was some excellent touch from a really tricky spot right at the seventh green. Big hunt to negotiate. Played that beautifully and would confidently roll that one in for a fifth unanswered birdie of the day. Just with the high point of the eighth green trying to nestle this one down close. He is a two-time winner on the Korean tour. Spent most of his year playing in the land of the rising sun, Ji Hoyang. Almost a six birdie of the day, but you’re not going to hear too many arguments from players carding bogey free 67s to start their week here at the Shinan Dong Open. So that’s what the first page of your leaderboard looks like. Yang leads by one over a quintet of players at four under par. Now out to the golf course we go and the last winner on the Asian tour. Pratip Tianai did it in some impressive fashion at Pondokinda to claim the Manderi Indonesia Open title and the putter continues to run hot for the tie known as D. also starting the first round of this tournament in a nice fashion. Birded the opening hole, two par since Moon quickly moving to two under par for his round. [Music] Now Ishikawa, that’s more like it from Rio. Three straight pass to start his day. [Applause] with some pace and that’s a very efficient way to start the week for Teahil Lee. One pass 71 on Thursday. That’s the the crowd that Anthony Kang was talking about. [Music] That’s a solid start to the championship for In Hoyhur. Now to San Hun Park at seven. Nice angle in for Doy of Mun’s third shot at the seventh. Yes, but he does have to be careful of the pin that is cut very tight to the left edge of the screen. Excellent shot by Mun and Yonghan Song for a birdie. It’s been eight straight pars to this point for Yonghan until now. That’s a nice way to go to the turn for Yonghan Song into red figures and inside the top 25. Now out to the back nine and Yonghan Song is second to the 10th and it’s a good one. Taken Jana for a first birdie of the day. Never a bad time to make your first one. That’ll make the walk to the 10th T a little bit easier for Kenjan. Recovers one of the pair of shots he dropped at five. Just enough speed on that Nago like man gets it to three under park the halfway mark of his opening round. Needs to start finding some birdies just to get a little confidence. This is a good look on 10. He stalks that one in. Well done, Rio. Back to even par. The ageless Kilnam Kang with third to 18. He’s won over par. [Applause] From one ageless to another ageless man who just is one rung above Kim Kong and number of Korean tour wins. Hangan Park has turned into quite the prolific winner for the last couple of seasons on the tour. His triumph at the Indonesia Open fourth title. We have the 2022 Korea players number one, Yang Su Kim. It’s a wide green for the players, but pin is cut on a top ledge on the back right corner. Tough to get close to not a problem for Sutipot. You won’t see too many closer than that today to 17 you friendly kick off the shoulder of the bunker. No pictures on the scorecards. He’d be very grateful for that fortuitous bounce. Oh, finally one drops for Teo. Breathes a sigh of relief. Balances his account for day one. Bit of an uncomfortable putt. Almost got to graze this off the fringe of the green. It’s going to hang hard right then and try to work back left as it makes its way down to the hole. This is for Regal though. Chance to get back to two under. And Moon gets it to drop. Well done. Good four there for Doy. That’s a sixth birdie of this opening round for Pratip Tienai. He’s up into a share of second. Eagle attempt for Ishiawa. Yeah, very well done from that distance. It’s pretty attempt to get back to two over par for his round. Going to need a couple more just to make his job a bit easier to make the weekend for tomorrow’s round. And a lot of that has got to do with that club in his hands right now. Syun Park with a lengthy one for birdie takes in the 21. is a joy to watch around the green park. Beautiful shot. One of the best we’ve seen from that section just gets it to drop. Yong Han fabulous opening round of 68. Capped off with a birdie on the last start Friday morning within one to left swinger for birdie on 17. Oh, beautifully rolled in. So, Hanikami Oji, what he’s known as in Japan, roughly translates into his nickname, the bashful prince. [Music] And just like Rio Ishiawa, Tahhun Oak is going to pour one in. Finally taking him back to red figures. Well done, Tahhun Oak. Yeah, he didn’t realize after going for the green and two that he’s going to have three full swings on this par five. Takes a lot of courage and a lot of skill to play a shot like that. Dyman up to the task. Little misread there. That’s going to be a rather disappointing way to end what was otherwise a a really good Thursday at the office. 69 for Pratty Piani. It’s for a round of 300 par 69. Classy shot from the back of the green. Hard work on that back nine but a nice way to close for Toyo Bud. like Sutipa for a 69. So birdies were plentiful this afternoon. I’m sure we’re going to see much of the same tomorrow. But it’s Jiho Yang who leads after the opening round here at the Jack Nicholas Golf Club. Play continues on Friday. We’ll hope to see you then. Bye-bye for now. Thanks for watching Asian Tour in the YouTube. And don’t forget like and subscribe.
