The 25th-ranked San Diego State men’s golf team continues its fall season at Utah’s The Wohali, Sept. 15-16, at The Wohali Golf Course in Coalville, Utah.
The 54-hole event will be contested over two days with two rounds slated for Monday and the final round set for Tuesday on the par-71, 7,873-yard layout near Salt Lake City.
The Aztecs, who are ranked 25th in the preseason Bushnell/Golfweek D1 Collegiate Poll, are coming an impressive fifth-place finish in their opener, Sept. 6-7, at the Sahalee Players in Sammamish, Washington. SDSU came in fifth of 12 at 18-over-par 882, beating No. 15 North Carolina (+21), No. 19 Pepperdine (+22), No. 22 Arizona (+24), Washington (+25), No. 4 Florida (+34), Northwestern (+45) and Oregon (+51). No. 6 Arizona State (+3), No. 3 Texas (+4), No. 24 UCLA (+9) and the USGA Junior National Team (+15) were the only teams to beat San Diego State.
Sophomore Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) fired a 5-under-par 67 in the final round to tie for second place out of 72 golfers at 2-under 214. It was the third career runner-up finish for the 2025 Mountain West Freshman of the Year, all of which have come over his last six tournaments dating back to last season.
Seniors Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) and Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) tied for 24th and 37th, respectively, while sophomore Kai Hirayama (Arcadia, Calif.) and junior Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) each tied for 41st at 11-over 227.
No. 25 San Diego State will once again compete in a loaded 14-team field this week. The Wohali includes No. 6 Arizona State, No. 13 Brigham Young, No. 24 UCLA along with Cal Poly, Colorado State, Georgia Southern, Kansas State, New Mexico, Oregon State, San Diego, Tarleton State, UNLV and host Utah.
The Aztecs will play their first two rounds with Brigham Young and New Mexico, beginning from the 10th hole at 7:45 a.m. MT (6:45 a.m. PT). Tuesday’s final round will be based on scores from the first two rounds.
Head coach Ryan Donovan has gone with the same lineup as SDSU’s last event in Washington, penciling in Takis, Choprajakchat, Kowack, Sampson and Hirayma.
Wohali Golf Club is one of the newest golf developments in Utah and is located only minutes from the world-renown ski-slopes of Park City, perfectly tucked away in a hidden valley just minutes from the small town of Coalville. This 19-hole course is nestled in the serene landscape of the Wasatch Mountains and designed by David Boyden. The course is complemented by additional golf amenities, including the Manor House, a 5,000-square-foot golf training center with a unique second-floor driving range. This range allows golfers to practice shots from various angles, including uphill, downhill, and level shots.
The Aztecs will also have five golfers competing as individuals at the Soldier Hollow Individual at Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway, Utah, including freshmen Beah Sahr (Eagle, Idaho), junior Phillip Kench (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS), sophomore Teddy Gardner (San Francisco), sophomore Grant Lester (Washington D.C.) and freshman Grayson Sebastian (Richmond, Texas).
SDSU wraps up is fall state at the Marquette Intercollegiate, Oct. 5-7, in Erin, Wisconsin.
