Help me. Oh, that’s what happens when you get older. You get more woods and less irons. Oh no, I hit a good shot, too. I keep dropping. Well, I thought that’s what you said to play it from. Useless. Useless match. I got to harden you up a bit. Oh my word. That’s what you get for trying to put me off. Hi, I’m Paul McInley. And I’m Steven. And we’re here to play a nine-hole match at a Dare Manner. the host to the 2027 RDER Cup. Let’s go, Iona. Don’t show me up. Okay, come on, Paul. I want a few shots. [Music] Right, Paul, we’re going to go off the same tease, which is a bit frightening for me. No, frightening for me because you’re going to hit it outside me. I know that. No, I play cruisy golf these days. Cruisy golf. What’s that? Cruisy golf is just, you know, that kind of within yourself golf. I I’ve only got one style of cruisy golf. I don’t have another style anymore. I’m giving you two shots. Two shots. We’re starting on the 10th T. Let’s be having it. Okay, let’s go. Nice breezy day in Ireland. Aona. Perfect. Still got it. It was a bit stiff, but it’ll do. That is looks like short grass. broken down all proon. If you can’t beat me, you can’t beat anybody today. And that’s the sad thing, Paul. Thankfully, I don’t have to beat anybody to put bread on the table. Right, off I go. Looks like it’s pretty much as you see it here. Have you played here before? Never. Oh, you’re in for the treat. Beauty. Little draw. Don’t hit it outside me owner. Please don’t hit it outside me. You did this year. Of course, we’re off to Beth Paige. The Ryder Cup’s come back around because it feels like just yesterday we were in Rome and it’s going to be tough to top that, Paul. Rome was in my opinion the best Ryder Cup ever. And I’ve been to I think 10 or 11 now. Uh and I think the performance of the team was the best ever. Yeah. Of any team on either side in my opinion. Wow. And I think also the staging that we did, European Tour staging was just off the scale. Yeah, it was the biggest buildout any golf tournament ever had anywhere in the world, including Augusta, including the US Open terms of hospitality stands. Um, it was phenomenal. I mean, the bar was raised so high in Italy and of course you had the chicness of being in Italy too and being in Rome. That’s right. All this history felt like it had led to this moment. Yeah, I think that was the best ever European team. I know we’ve had some great teams in the past. Don’t want to be disrespectful to any of those teams, but I think from 1 to 12, that European team was the best we ever put out. And I think we had the top three players in the world at the time. Yeah. Victor, Rory, and John were one, two, and three in the world. Yeah. How often can we say that? Uh-huh. So, this is an interesting hole. As we say, we started on the 10th T. What do you think of this 10th hole? Okay. So, this is a very shallow green. It’s a wide green, but it’s shallow. So, it’s all about distance control with the second shot here. It’s looking good, I just exactly what you said. Stay just over the back. Yeah, you see it too much shape this way. Yeah, you see the shape going like that. The wind coming off that side. A shallow green. You needed to land soft. So that’s why they’re banking it against the wind. I’m trying to I mean I genuinely tried to hold that off a little bit and it was trying for me but looks like that shallow greens caught me out. Exactly. I see that little smile. Another victim. This is the kind of shot I used to relish. There it is. It’s a great shot. Yeah. Just about. You can see it was working. It was just holding it against it. Yeah. Very nice. I did. I could have cut it more. I didn’t hit it. Going to need a bit of sevy in this one. You really think that’s a shot? I’m open. If you want to get it close, there is no way. Maybe Phil Mickelson could pitch it up there with a flop shot and stop it. If you want to get it close, you’ve got to hit it into the bank. And I would put it back in the stance. Yep. And I would kill it into the very top of the bank. Kill it into this bit. So when you walk up here, you can feel this is really steep here. So you’ve got to hit it in there with quite a bit of speed because it’s so steep. Let it pop up in the air and then let it just try to trickle down. The idea is the bank kills it. Iona. Iona, I’m glad you’re here, Paul. How about that for a shot? Thank you. That would have been a Scotty Sheffller special. That’s what he would have done. And he can chip. Thank you. That is some great ad. I’ll keep you as my caddy for the rest of this match if you don’t mind. Yeah, I’m I’m probably better as a caddy now than I am a player. It’s got to go. I had it, didn’t I? You did. It’s in the jaws. Take it away. Okay. Is that for a half? Yeah. I’m not going to read it for you. I’ve already given you too much help. Okay. Match play is a game within a game. We don’t play enough of it in pro golf in my opinion. I loved match play. I grew up playing it here in Ireland. Yeah. All our major championships were played in match play. I was a good match player. And I loved it when I played as a pro, too. It’s a game. It’s a psych psychological game. And it’s putting pressure on. Okay. So, now I’m in the hole for four. So, now there’s a little bit extra pressure on you. You got this for a half. There’s not a lot in this right center. Very good. Very good. Good save. I felt that pressure. Good save. Yeah, I’m only starting on you. I played mind games. You’re cool as a cucumber. I love match play. Right. I still have the honor. Okay. The honor is so important in match play because now I’m going to put pressure on you. That’s my intention. So if I put it on here with a good shot, it makes your shot much more difficult. So it’s always important to put your opponent under as much pressure as they can. Yeah. I got an eight iron and I’m going to try to drive it through the wind. Okay. There’s a little bit of bounce on these greens. So it’s probably only playing about 140 to the front. Looks really good. It’s really good. Yeah, it’s a great shot, Paul. That didn’t that didn’t budge. You’re not meant to clap your opponent, See? Useless useless match. I got to harden you up a bit. Okay. Is it up? Go. No. Didn’t quite catch it, did you? Didn’t, but I was just trying to kind of hit a smooth one, you know, and actually it probably was a full one. It was definitely a full one. I feel like I I hit it kind of how I wanted, actually. Yeah. And the winds caught me out. Yeah. So, I’m going to be You didn’t need a clippy one. You needed a full one. I needed a full one. I thought that was going to be a bit too much club. I got it wrong. Options, options. I think I might play my 56 just because I want it to release a little. Beautifully played. Ah, that’s class. Well played, Iona. Thank you. chances. Okay, I see a little bit of a double break on this. Ah, hard. Didn’t take enough of a to break. Good effort. Yeah, that’s it. That’s a better attitude. Just toughening up a little bit. Yeah, you’re about to see my hard side. Yeah, good. I didn’t know I had one of them. What meant more to you, Paul, playing in the RDER Cup or captaining? I get asked that question a lot. Yeah. Um I think the sense of achievement that’s captain it’s two different emotions. So holding the winning pot, it’s like an explosion of joy. just a huge explosion. I don’t know where I got this idea, but at a press conference afterwards, they asked me what it felt like, and I said it was I felt like a bottle of champagne that had been that been, you know, shaking shaken, shaken, and then the pop came off. The pop came off and it just popped. That’s the feeling when you hold a winning pot. Yeah. But the sense of of collective achievement when you’re captain that your strategy, your communications, all the stuff that you did to manage the 12 players, Yeah. gave so many people joy. That’s a real That’s That’s a real deep sense of um kind of collective giving if you know. Yeah. It’s like a deep It’s a deeper probably a deeper emotion. A deeper emotion. Yeah, it is. Do you still carry that emotion with you? How long does that that real never leaves? That’s what wonderful gift. It’s it’s just great to that you know you created so much joy for so many people. But I’ve been in enough ride of cups now to know that captain makes a massive difference. Your job as the captain is to create a platform and a place for them mentally to go unburdened and unshackled and play well. And that’s not easy to do because you’re taking guys from an individual sport who are not used to be part of a team and then try to put them together. And it’s it’s tricky. It’s really tricky. Okay. Okay. This is a wooded area. Bunkers up the left, loads of room up the right. Par five. Let’s be having you. But it’s a three shot hole. So good. Yeah, that wasn’t bad for a broken down old pro. That was out the screws. That one. So, if I knock this a wee bit past you, there’s no excuses that it wasn’t your best. I’ve set myself up now. I’ve opened the door. You’ve got a free shot. Okay. It’s okay. It’s going to be in the rough, but it’s okay. Is it? Yeah. Oh, okay. You got a little bit too much from the inside. That’s why you get so much draw on it, but we can fix that. Do a bit of work. If you could help me fix that, I’d be very grateful. You got to thread the needle. What are you going to do here, Diana? Well, I’m going to do what you told me to. I’m going to thread the needle and with my throughwood, it feels like I’ve got a little help off the left. Um, so I’m thinking just the right edge of that green side bunker just if I finish it a bit right of that. Perfect. Yeah. Okay, that should drop to the inside again, Iona. Yeah. What’s over there? It’s going to be probably bunker. Bunker. Yeah. Just came from the inside. Coming at it too much from the inside. Yeah. 235 to the front. I used to be able to hit it there. What would you like? I think I best I’m going to do is front. I I’ll hit it in the front bunker. I’ll hit the 3-wood. You got a lot of things that say three. Yeah, I know. I don’t know which is which. That’s what happens when you get older. You get more woods and less irons. Lot of head covers in that bag Paul. My old caddy Jimmy Kimmy would have been very confused with all the head covers cuz even with two head covers, he got confused strike. Yeah, I didn’t quite get it on the line I wanted. Up you go. Up, up, up, up, up, up. Look at that. 234 and I can’t even get it to the front edge. Used to be a fivewood I own back in the a bygone era Paul. Yeah. I’m going to give you a little bit of a match play hint here. Right. Okay. You’re out of position. I’m in a pretty decent position, but it’s not a straightforward up and down. Yeah. So, don’t take it as a given that I’m getting it up and down. Your attitude here is I’m not in a great position here, but what I’m going to do is I’m going to make sure I’m going to make five. Yeah. And I’m going to force him if he wants to win the hole to have to make birdie. So, this is not a time to be aggressive. This is a time to make sure you carry that front bunker and make my chip tougher. Right. Needs to go. That’s a mistake. Yep. Donald would not be very happy with me. That’s a mistake. Yeah, that’s a mistake. you. You’ve now made my chip shot a whole lot easier because I’m thinking even if I don’t make a four, I’ll probably still win the hole because she’s not in a good spot. Okay, I so now it’s really important what I’ve just done there. I’ve now seen your sem plugged. You’re on a down slope. You got no green to work with. Happy days for me. You can just enjoy the hole now, Paul. I’m now thinking probably a five is going to do here. Wait till I haul this out. Wait till I knock this in the hole. Little bit giddy. Pretty good. Pretty good. Oh, still going. Just took a bit more break. I got the speed right. Yeah. Bit more break than I thought. Quite a nasty hole. But I got a smile on my face. At least that makes one of us. Just anything within 10 feet or 10 feet would be a good result. Give myself a chance of the putt. Loads of loft. I would have said if you had anything inside 10 ft that would have been a worldly shot. Come back. Okay. You’ve got a putt for five. I’ll get your bunker. You go ahead. Get your putter. Thank you. be absolutely fuming with myself. Whip that one up. I fancy my chances of holding this one. This is a good looking pot putt. It’s very inviting. It’s got Let me see have the flag. Yeah, it’s definitely some left to right in this. If you don’t make this, you’re going to concede me. So, yeah, I’m sitting here. It’s important that I don’t switch off mentally here and think I have the whole one. So, I got to still think that I got to make this putt and expect you to hold yours so that if you do hold it, I’m not on a downer. Okay. Good try. It’s too high. All right. Pick it up. Thank you, Mcinley. One up. One up. The good news is you got a stroke on the next hole. I over this way. Now we come to my favorite hole on the course. Tree line par 4. Slightly blind T-shot, but you use the corridor of trees as your guidance. All righty. And you do have a stroke here. Ayanna, music to my ears. Paul, how many Ryder Cups have you been to? Just the one. Just the one. Marco Simone. Wow. Start at the top. It blew me away. Yeah, it blew me away. If I only went to one and that was it, I’d die a happy moment. Yeah. Like I said earlier, I think that was the best one that I’ve ever been to. Yeah. And then obviously getting the the honor of of doing the presentation at the end, that was Yeah. like the best best what what a privilege that was. Yeah, absolutely. Righty. Okay. Good looking hole. I think my honor Rory Moy said it’s Parkland perfection a dear manor and this kind of getting an understanding of why. Oh, take that one. I wish I had a bad back more often. And I might hit it like this all the time. Do they do a senior rider cup fall? Any interest? I’m inspired against you today, Iona. That’s good to hear. Let’s see if I can find something down here. Drifting a hair. Is it enough? Maybe just fine, Paul. I don’t know. It’s close. I was trying to give it the march off. Yeah, just caught it slightly towards the heel. It really wasn’t far away. Well, you talk about match play, too. Uh I’m a big believer in body language. Yeah. So, you know, you you you talk to your opponent through your body language. Tell you what, I can see a we white egg sitting up. You do with better eyes than me. I see one in the bunker. Do you? Oh, in trouble. I don’t know. It’s close. Might have been saved by the rake. Ah, you’re short of it, Ia. Somebody’s looking down on me. Must be my Irish ancestors. Are your Irish ancestors? I do. My my both sides of my family. My mom’s a Monahan. My dad’s up by his grandparents were up from Bali Lifen. Okay. Don G. That’s where my mom and dad are from. I’m actually half Irish Paul, believe it or not. Good. We’ll claim you if you want. Yeah. Do you pick targets? Yeah, I like trees. Okay. There’s a big one there just where you should be hitting it. See it right edge of the bunker? Uh, exactly. Yeah, the white. That one is Yeah, kind of a whitey gray. Yeah, that’s the one trunk on it. I would like to finish it on that. You do have a stroke. Yep. It’s got to go. Go too short. Just just nearly on the front end. Getting the putter at it. Quite get that. There for one net one. That set me up for a good two putt from there. He’s putting me through my paces. This Mcinley Paul. Yeah. Red squirrel. Look at him go. You’re a long way from the flag. I think you’re going to do really well to get down to two. If I can make a four here, I could squeeze a half. Okay. Again, there’s no room where the flag is. So, I’m going to go middle of the green. Mhm. And try to hit an Iona 5°ree into out draw. Oh, you’ve done it. No, I didn’t. Have you overcooked it? Y. There you go. Oh, I got stuck behind it there. That was a bad swing. That’s definitely an Iona. That was a bad swing. A little bit fat. Yeah. This is a humongous putt. I think it’s me to go. Is it Paul? Pardon? Is it me to go? Yeah. Yeah. It’s just peace. Nothing silly. Keep going. Keep going. Keep going. Keep going. Okay, you’re opening the door for me. Oh, thought that was going to be good for pace. What a shot. Is it close? Yes. I thought it might have been in. You know, you’re in trouble. You open the door for me. Now the pressure’s on you. How did you spin that out of that? Why? Now the pressure is on you. You’ve got this for a win. Yep. But if you get a little bit giddy, you’re really going to put yourself under pressure with a two-footer for a half. You’re not going to make me pop when psychologically you thought you were going to win the hole easy. Okay. Well, listen. This I have switched the whole momentum of the hole with that chip shot. This hole is nothing but net. I I’m find I’m finding these greens really difficult to read because the brakes are so subtle. I’m not seeing a lot in this one. I don’t expect you to give me any help, but I’m just saying it out loud. Now, there’s nothing in this Good try. It just moves. Good putt. It was a good put on. Thank you. But I’ve escaped with a half. I’m very happy with myself. I’m very disappointed. Look at the way the trees are done here. Isn’t this nice? Yeah. Everything is just to detail. All of these trees. He had an abortist in who looked at every single tree in the whole estate and um kind of trimmed them, looked after them, looked at their health. Yeah, that’s why they’re all such great specimens. They have uh a file on every tree and Yeah. Yeah. It’s brilliant. Nice bit of shelter for some of the fans in 2027. No doubt we’ll get all kinds of weathers and that’s part of the joy of playing golf in Ireland. Okay, on another hole it’s made for you. Little right to lefter. I’m not going to be so nice in this hole. I’ve had enough now, Paul. Starting to warm up a little bit. Unfortunately, I think you are too. This is a really good par four. Okay, it’s a tricky green. You got to be coming at it from the fairway down off the left. that going to hang on for you? Yep, it’s perfect. So, it is opens up the green for me. I’m happy with that one. Good shot, Ayanna. The weed is I think it’s going to be okay. Sit. Yeah. Soft bounce. Good. Well played. Yeah. Thanks, Luke. Donald was a marvelous and successful captain in Rome. What in your opinion, let’s take you out of the equation because many look to you now as as a real guide with the textbook of how to captain a Ryder Cup, but let’s put you to the side. Who do you think has been one of, if not the greatest Rder Cup captain of all time? Oh, it’s so hard. I mean, every god, there’s so many captains, every captain brings a different skill set and certainly the one that had the biggest effect on me was Sam Torrance. And uh, you know, not saying that Bernard Langanger played under as well, didn’t have a big effect, but I played under Sevy. Sebie captained me. Alasal captained me. Monty captained me. So, you know, I’ve had a lot of experience of some of the greats of European golf being captains. Um, but Sam had had the biggest effect on me. Maybe because he was my first, but probably because I’m a big believer in man management and he talked to that more than anybody else. You know, how he dealt with one person was very different than how he dealt with the next. And his communication with each player was very individual, very different. And he knew how to ignite this person and then how to ignite this person. and and then put it together and and I think we were very inspired. Um and I put that a lot down to his man management. I always used to call him the happiest guy in the room. Every time he walked, you know, talked about body language in match play. Same in a captain. Every time you saw Sam, beaming beaming smile, big mustache, the bushy mustache, the beaming smile like this is the greatest event of all time. And that kind you took off that energy and and Luke’s Luke’s been a great choice in that regard. Certainly. Righty. Got to be left of the flag. The green camers from left to right. 150. This is like a 145. Is that all right? Perfect. Front edge. Yeah. This used to be a shot that when I was on tour was right up my alley. Three/4er wedges. This is control with the short irons was my game, Iona. Okay, Paul, let’s see. But the skill set is not quite the same. Awful lot of water on the right hand side. Look at you trying your hardest. Didn’t stand a chance. Yeah, you deserve that. You deserve that. Oh my word. That’s what you get for trying to put me off. No, you inspired me there to hit a good shot. Fair play, Paul. Fair play. Nearly hold that. I know, right? You can pick that up. Absolutely turning the screw on me there. I was close to going in, huh? Well, she was winding me up. I had to hit a good shot. She was trying to uh mess with my head, telling me about the water on the right. She deserved it. Okay, well, I’ve got to hold this one now. It’s a real match play moment. Well, you got nothing to lose now. So, pick it up. Wasn’t going to leave it short. Two down. Help me. Iona, this is a drive up for, but not today. We’re into the wind. Water down the right. Yes, bunker down the left. Thank you for reminding me. Ah, over the top. Dead lucky. Are you safe? Oh, clipped the tree. It’ll be all right. It’ll be all right. Right. The door is a jar for me. One of the best salmon rivers in Ireland. That one. Iona. Was it? Catch a wee fishy. Yeah. Goes into the Shannon. Our biggest river in Ireland. Eventually probably leads to the Atlantic. Exactly. Oh, my grip slipped. Hang on. I think you might have got lucky just about. Absolutely slippy mix slippers. Oh, nothing to do with the talk about fishes in rivers. No. No. You see, if you’re going to bust, you got to be a bit more subtle than just saying there’s water on the right. Yeah. The salmon was jumping. I take a drop then, Paul. Yeah, take a drop. What are we doing here? Well, it’s 80. Why you dropping me down? I thought that’s what you said to play it from. Two club lens on and do it properly. Exactly. Into the rough. Now it’s a different shot. All right. All right. Fair. Fair. Fair. It’s been too long since I took this game, you know, seriously and did it properly. This is going to be a very important shot. Thank you. 86 yards. Right on the limit really from my 52 with this crosswind to my third shot. Must get up and down. Good shot. Very good. Excellent. Give yourself chance for four. I like it. Well played. Thank you. As I was saying, good example there of what not to do if your opponent hits theirs left off the tree and gives you for the first time really a little opportunity. I just stood up there and knew I wasn’t quite comfy over it and hit it anyway. One place you can’t miss it on this hole out on the right. But anyway, I’ve taken my drop. Three on the green. Putt for a four. Paul looks like he’s under a tree. Come on, let’s go and find out. What I’ve come to realize is the more I try and wind you up, the more it’s having the opposite effect. So, I’m going to stop now. Okay. So, I’ve got 90 yards here, Ayanna. Uh-huh. And up slope. You’ve hit a good shot in there. So, you you’ve made this shot tougher for me. I got an ups slope into the wind. I got to be I got to make sure to make good contact on this and not make it easy for you. Down the contact. Down. Yeah, nice. Thank you. Can’t really complain at that. It’s a good shot. Well, I could I could nearly have lost this hole by being a bit too clever with that second shot, but it’s all right now. It’s a pretty special view walking onto this screen, isn’t it? Wait to see the next hole. Absolutely. Look at the next hole. Part three. My mind’s still on this old ball. I’ve got my work cut out here. You hit a really good shot in there. Thank you. Are we okay? Yes, please. I’ve got a shot here to win the hole and maybe two. So, it’s important I don’t get giddy here. If it goes in, it’s going to just fall in cuz got a bit of speed on it being downwind. Oh, Paul. Right in the middle. You had it in the jaws, but you can take it away. Giving me a we chance. Okay, on that two down, this is a must make. Yeah. What great match players do, I’m thinking Pter, I’m thinking Westwood, I’m thinking Sergio. What great match players do is understand the moment and rise to it. Ah, good putt. Just didn’t have enough break on it, did you? No. A lot of break there. Okay, that put you three down with three to play on it. Okay, well, there’s a fighter in there somewhere. Don’t need that one. The mistake was a T-shot, wasn’t it? Yeah, huge mistake. Another diagonal green. It’s a big feature of Tom Fazio. Look how wide it is. It must be 70 80 yards wide. This is where my ruthless streak comes out. And my objective here is to not let you get to the 17th. Okay, that’s my objective. I’m sorry, Iona. It’s a bit me. What club you got? I got an eight iron and I’m going to really try and cut it into the wind. I’m trying to get this baby to come down softly. Oh no, I hit a good shot, too. I wasn’t sure where that was going to come down because it’s too hard to see. I cut it too much. Same with the salmon. Same with the salmon. Oh, Ia, the door’s wide open. Oh, man. Oh, man. And I can’t believe I’ve done that. Anywhere on green grass is your objective now. It’s going to be over the back, I think. Is it? It’s not. Well done, Iona. Thank you. Excellent. Thank you. Cheers, Pop. I learned from yours. I’m not going to lie. Yeah. We are not done yet. Okay, I might get a four. A good shot. Oh, it’s a great shot. Little bit shy. Brilliant. Little bit shy. I think it was Gary Player that said, “Happiness is a long walk with the putter, particularly when you’re three down with three to play. Okay, Ayona, I’m very impressed with your T-shot there. Well played. Thank you. two parts to win the hole. I’m bringing you out of your comfort zone, particularly on a windy day in Ireland. Oh, did you hit it? You did. Well done. Thank you. All right. Conceded. Cheers. Well done, Iona. Made hole. It’s a tough course, you know, let alone if you don’t know it. Yeah. The most difficult hole on the golf course. Look at the back tea is way up the top of the hill there. What a hole. Wow. Now you’ve got a chance. And you’ve got a stroke here where that bunker looks miles away. It is miles away. You won’t reach it. So you can smash it at that. It’s a wide fairway. should kick down to the right from there. There you go. That’s the fast lane. Thank you. That’s the fast lane. Iona, you’re coming at me. Got to do something, don’t I? Yeah. Thank you. Very nice. Yes. Good. Two different angles to be coming in on maybe. What do you think uh is the most impressive shot you’ve ever seen played in a RDER Cup? Oh, good question. I think you got to relate it to the situation. Yep. And I keep going back to the miracle at Madino and some of the stuff that the impalter did on the Saturday and indeed on the Sunday. Um Justin Rose’s putt on 17. Um Martin Kimer’s putt on 18. I mean it really was a miracle. Yeah. So many things went our way that day for us to win and us holding massive putts or pulling off amazing shots when we really needed to. Yeah. So I’d have to say pick a number of those. Um I’m sure there’s some others I’m forgetting about. No, I think you’re probably right. It’s basically that whole that whole final day. Miracle Madina. Miracle Madina was one of the greatest sporting events of all time. Yeah. I keep telling people who don’t understand golf in soccer terms, it was like playing away from home, being 3-0 down with 15 minutes to go and winning 4-3 away from home. Remarkable. Yeah. In a in a Champions League final or something. Yeah. Just It’s just a one in a million. Keep coming. Okay, you’re on the dance floor. Dance floor. But I thought it might come back right off that slightly below my feet. Didn’t. It was a good shot, Iona. Thank you. Take the good out of it. You put me under pressure with a stroke. Remember? Oh, yeah. That’s right. Thing about match blades, you can’t let your brain switch off. Absolutely. You got to have it upstairs. That’s why I’m so mad at that T-shot on 16. You know, I had the game one. Now look, I’ve lost that one. You’re there with a shot. Probably going to go down the last water and play. Anything can happen. Well, I was pretty because I wasn’t on it with that T-shot. I misjudged the wind. But I can say the same about the T-shot on 15. It’s all in the past. We’re here in the present. And you’ve got a bit of a fluffy lie there, Paul. Well, now I’m thinking three. Okay. I’ve got to take a little bit of a gamble here because you’re in a good spot. He’s right at it. Be good. Yeah, that’s a great shot. Thank you. Thank you. You never lose it. You never lose it. We were chatting about Sevy earlier and you know his brilliance and magic and belief that he brought to the team. Could you pick out a player that’s living in this modern day of golf that you think has the essence perhaps the spirit of something that’s a bit like Sebie? Certainly in my era Monty did in a team room. Monty was tremendous in a team room. Uh Westwood was tremendous in the team room. Pther obviously Sergio, you know, there’s reasons why we had a great era. Yes. And a lot of it was down to personality, not just skill sets. We had a lot of personality in those team rooms in the early 2000s. Who do you think in Rome in Marco Simone played a key role in the spirit and the dynamic of the team? I think Rory does. Yeah. Um I think Shane Lowry does. I think I think John John Ram does it because of his fearsomeness as a competitor and his pride. Okay, it’s big pot for me here, Paul. Big peeler from right to left. Peel. Totally overread that. I really thought that was going to break. Okay. You’re giving me a chance to finish the game. I have. You didn’t leave it dead. So, you’ve left the door open. You’ve made it easier cuz psychologically, I’m thinking I got two chances here. Either I make mine, finish the game, or you’ve got a very tricky putt that you might miss. Yeah. So, that makes my putt, it puts me in a better psychological place to hit my putt. Excellent. Takes a little bit of pressure off it because I have an out. And the out is if I miss, you could miss, too. It’s much the same here. Bit like where I am now. It’s just as big a stage. He’s got it. A dagger blow. A birdie. That’s it, right? That’s it. That’s the match. That’s it. Paul, hard look. Very well done. I guess you just reminded me and the rest of us why you’re a three-time Rur Cup player and such a successful captain. It’s been an absolute honor to be around you and just sort of feel that steely competitiveness that you still have and to watch some of these wonderful shots. Paul, the match is over two and one, but it feels like we ought to play the 18th because it’s such a spectacular finishing hole and you know better than most how we should take it on. Of course we do. It’s a really tough one today with the wind off the left and the water off the left. So I mean just look at the look at the manner in the background. It’s just stunning, isn’t it? Ah, what a backdrop that will be. The bridge and there’s that Lebanon tree. That’s they say that’s one of the oldest trees in Europe. Wow. Several several six six maybe 700 years old. Maybe even older. Hard to prove it, but that’s what they say. It’s yet to see a rider cut, but it will in a couple years. Yeah. Okay then. Okay. So, tough drive hole. This is a bonus hole. We’ll play for a little cocktail in the manner after. How about that? That sounds good to me. Sounds perfect, actually. Oh, of course it’s laced down the middle. Yeah, you’ve given yourself every inch to get home in two there by hugging the left hand side. I know how expensive cocktails are in the mana. It’ll be a spicy margarita for me. There you go. Best one today. A thank you. See, mention alcohol and you’re off. How much do you want a spicy margarita? Quite a lot. Very thirsty. I’m going for this one, Paul. Yeah, of course. We from this far up, you got to go for it. Oh gosh, this is everything. 222 to the flag. That front edge is one. Well, my my advice to you is aiming at the two bunkers. Yeah. And if it blows in the wind, great. If not, you’re going to have a straightforward bunker shot. Don’t take on the flag because the further you take it on there, the more it’s going to drift on the wind and the longer the carry. I’m doing all I can here for you to win your spicy margarita. I appreciate that. I’ll give you half a shot as well. You know what half a shot is? No. So half a shot means if we both have the same score, if say if I have five and you five, you have half a shot. So you’ve got four and a half. You beat me. I like the sound of that. Just like that. Best shot of the day. Two best shots of the day. What a girl. Way to go. Ion on the green and two. Get in. Crowd go wild. Waving to the fans. My dad’s up in the top right hand side of that grand stand. Yes. Come on. Ah, did the opposite. I double crossed it. You really want to buy this mark for me, don’t you, Paul? We’ll do another I’m going to try and spin it. Try to pitch it as close to the edge as I can with spin. Yeah. Just nipped it. Spin. Didn’t spin it. Yeah. Well played. Almost as good as I could have done. That’s a brilliant shot, Paul. Brilliant. I did well to not hit that in the water. I like your rods and the spicy margarita now with that half shot. Yeah. Although I’ve seen your putting. That’s horrible for you. I got to take it right up on this ridge. Okay, not going to overthink this one. If she gets this wrong, this could go in the water. Not bad at all. What a pot. In, in, in, in, in. Oh, what a shot, Iona. Thank you. Wow. Nearly Oh, you clown uphill into the wind again. You know you had it again. I did have it, didn’t I? All right, go on. Finish with a blaze of glory. Earn your margarita. Well done. What a birdie. Good. What a birdie to finish. Paul, honestly, it’s been an absolute delight. We’ve learned a lot there in those few holes playing with you and we hope that you have as well. Enjoyed it, too. Well done. It was an absolute treat and it’s going to be a great Ryder Cup. Come here at Adair Manor in 2027. We’ll see you there. We’ll see you there. What a windome pairing! Two nice people having fun on the golf course.
This is very good content, Iona. Thank You!
Paul is one of the true gentleman of the game. He’s still a great ball striker !!!
492 Par 5. Rory hitting Driver, 8 or 9 iron. Bonkers.
Loved this content. Paul McGinley is such a gent and a true competitor. We could learn a lot from listening to him. 🏆
He's a nice guy, but let's be honest, your nan could captain the Ryder Cup team!
He had her stuffed on the first hole when he told her she was coming from the inside…then she thought of that all the way around
Looks like he’s playing the red tees😂😂
Paul is an absolute legend both for European golf and the Ryder cup. Immense player and Captain. Love listening to him on Sky Sports..
All golfers know what Iona means when she says, didn’t feel comfortable but hit it anyway. I do that constantly. Just don’t feel right but rather than stepping back hit the thing and almost always hit a grotty shot.
Get the man to again, learned so much in 30 mins, we need more ❤
@ontheroadwithiona
The only thing more stunning than Adare Manor is Iona Stephen! 😂
Just Great! Enjoyed this immensely.
The ruthless shot for Paul on 16 would have been left of the pin, not straight at it.
Iona's drive and second on 18 were legendary. Pretty good putt as well !
confirmed my thoughts on McGinley being a k..b
One of the best and most enjoyable videos I have watched in a long time. Iona is a total delight and love the bantering with Paul; a total gentleman in every way who demonstrated he still has plenty of game and wisdom
Paul, ya talk too much
brilliant video… beautiful course… love to play it some day.
Paul is a real ex pro- happy pass on advice but it’s still a comp and he’s not giving it away for nothing. It was great- he even chastised Iona for clapping him, it’s all tongue in cheek, just sit back and enjoy.
Mr McGinley one of my favourite ⚒⚒Iona effortless chat, loved it
Great video. Love listening to Paul’s views and mental approaches to holes and situations in match play
Such an amazing content. Iona, you always involve exceptional guests. I take my hat off to you!
Yes, McGinteeeeeeeeeee!
Had the honour to see Paul play at the KLM Open a number of years back. Greatly enjoyed his sharing of competitive thinking. It sounded quite tough at times, but then again, keep your mind sharp!
Great video but would have been so much better if they told the club and yardage they had to greens.Their tee shots on the 525 yrd 18 hole were they 300 yds or more ?
Why are Ryder Cup venues in UK and Ireland not Links courses? Troon, Hoylake, St George's, Portrush etc..
Amazing, love watching this match.
Great pairing. Course look immaculate, fairways that look like greens, base of trees make me think of Augusta manicured lines. The club house and river showcase the history of the place. Delighted that it'll host the Ryder Cup in a couple of years, fingers crossed Ireland has 3 or 4 players on that team 🇮🇪🇪🇺
์Nice and challenging golf course
im just here to read and laugh at all the simp comments. Pathetic
Did you both forget to take the correct clubs on the 13th, seamless edit but you both had putters at the start 😂
Does McGinley know that Iona was a pro golfer before a TV pundit. Cause I'm getting she knows what match play is..
Great content and Paul was amazing loved the advice. And Iona class as always❤
Brilliant video this. Fun and competition, respect and appreciation on both sides. Loved it.
Brilliant video this. Fun and competition, respect and appreciation on both sides. Loved it.
Course looks amazing. Fun match.
Pure Class. BOTH.
I really enjoy Paul chuckling after Johnson Wagner fails to pull off a shot during Live From… What a stunning venue. Thanks Iona. Another keeper in your previews.
Brilliant video. Wonderful golf course. Cmon 2027.
Hah! "one of the best rivers in Ireland" leading directly to the bleep 😂😂 what a video
Brilliant match between two great people.
