WNBA breaking story
In one of the most talked about moments of the WNBA season, former Indiana Fever forward Nelissa Smith is at the center of a heated debate after a shocking play left Los Angeles Sparks star Cameron Brink with a gruesome nose injury. The incident took place during the second quarter of yesterday’s game. Smith, now thriving with the Las Vegas Aces and helping lead them to an impressive 14-15 game-winning streak, went up for a play in the paint, but her elbow made brutal contact with Brink’s face. The result, Brink left the court bleeding, assisted by teammate Derkica Hamby, and fans immediately erupted online. At first glance, the collision appeared accidental, a routine basketball play gone wrong. But slow motion replays tell a different story. The viral footage circulating on X shows what many believe was a clear moment of eye contact between Smith and Brink before the elbow was thrown. Fans are now debating whether this was simply hard-nosed basketball or a deliberate act of aggression. Brink’s injury is particularly concerning given her history. The talented forward missed most of last season after suffering a torn ACL and only returned to action in late July. Her comeback has been one of the sparks most inspiring storylines with Brink quickly becoming a key contributor alongside Kelsey Plum. Social media has been divided. Some commenters argue that the WNBA has grown too physical with one fan writing, “The league is growing with new fans. Missing stars like Clark and Brink for extended periods could hurt all that progress.” Others have defended Smith, saying she simply made a hard play in a competitive game. However, many are pointing to the slow motion angles as proof of intent. There was no reason for her to swing her elbow like that other than to hurt Brink. One user posted, “This controversy comes just days after WNBA Commissioner Kathy Engelbert addressed concerns about officiating and league physicality. Many believe this latest incident only underscores the need for stronger measures to protect players as the league heads into the postseason. Whether intentional or not, the play has already become one of the most viral moments of the season and has reignited the debate about how physical the WNBA should allow games to get. With the Aces storming into the playoffs and the Sparks fighting to stay healthy, all eyes will be on both teams moving forward. Fans are waiting for updates on Brink’s condition and for potential league discipline towards Smith. One thing is clear, the drama surrounding this collision has added even more fuel to what was already shaping up to be a fiery end to the regular season.

It was a drity, flagrant foul!!!!!! It was no need for her to swing her left arm like that, her body momentum was going to the basket for the layup, look how far her arm had to go back to make contact with Cam face, Cam was even lending back trying to get out the It might as well been a punch, it was definitely on purpose, a drity drity play no question stay strong Cam
The WNBA is rediculous in it's lack of protection for the players. So costly to an expanding successful brand. The WNBA can not afford this officiating as they are going to lose their audience. Let the players play but call the damn fouls. Otherwise your game is bulls__t. Imagine an NBA that allowed this. It would start looking like football without the pads as the injuries pile up on the sidelines. None of those players you bought those tickets to see play would be playing. Just like the WNBA is now.
