Former US Mid-Amateur champion Matthew McClean will be looking to repeat the feat this week as he tees it up in the US Mid-Amateur Championship at Troon Country Club in Arizona.
McClean won this championship in 2022, beating Royal Dublin’s Hugh Foley in an all-Irish final at Erin Hills in what was the first time that an Irish pairing contested a USGA final with McClean becoming the second international golfer to win the event.
It opened doors to the Masters and US Open in 2023 and the Malone man who is based in Belfast as an optometrist will be hoping he can have another deep run.
The 32-year-old missed out on a Walker Cup place for Great Britain and Ireland last week but can put some gloss on a disappointing season.
McClean will be joined by John Conroy and Ben Phipps.
The championship will be played across 36-holes of stroke play qualifying with the top-64 advancing to the matchplay stages.
