Don Martone Dominates to Capture 2025 Canadian Men’s Senior Championship

NEW MINAS, N.S. — Don Martone capped off an unforgettable week at KenWo Golf Club with a gritty final round to win the 2025 Canadian Men’s Senior Championship, presented by BDO. The Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. native closed with a steady 1-over 71 on Friday, securing the national title at 7-under 273—eight shots clear of Ottawa’s Dwight Reinhart.
Martone was the lone player to finish the week under par, with rounds of 71-63-68-71 highlighted by a second-round 63 that set a new course record. The win also helped power Team Ontario to victory in the Inter-Provincial Team Championship.
Battling Through Adversity
The championship nearly slipped away when Martone injured his back late in Thursday’s third round. Unsure if he could even tee it up for the finale, he ground through discomfort to finish the job.
“Today was probably the toughest round of golf I’ve played in a really long time,” Martone said. “When I got up this morning, I was in a lot of pain and wasn’t sure I could go. To push through and finish it off means a lot.”
Known for his aggressive style, Martone dialed back the risks and focused on keeping the ball in play. The perseverance paid off with one of the biggest wins of his career.
“I put this up there with making the Canadian Tour and qualifying for it,” he reflected. “This week has been incredible—the membership at KenWo, the volunteers, everyone welcomed us with open arms.”
Ontario Ends Alberta’s Run
Martone’s triumph wasn’t his only reason to celebrate. Alongside teammates Mike Kray (Oakville, Ont.) and Ashley Chinner (Brooklin, Ont.), he helped Ontario snap Alberta’s streak of four straight Inter-Provincial Team titles. Ontario finished at 1-under, 11 shots clear of the field.
Team New Brunswick and Alberta tied for second at 10-over, with Quebec and Manitoba rounding out the top five.
Hall Goes Back-to-Back in Super Senior
While Martone owned the overall spotlight, Georgia’s Jack Hall successfully defended his Super Senior (65+) title. Hall finished tied for fourth overall at 4-over 284, five shots ahead of 2023 champion Doug Hanzel.
Hall also has a history with the championship—last year he beat Hanzel in a playoff to capture the division after Hanzel had won both titles the previous season.
Looking Ahead
With the victory, Martone earns exemptions into the 2026 Canadian Men’s Amateur, Canadian Mid-Amateur, Canadian Men’s Senior (plus a 10-year exemption, if eligible), and the U.S. Senior Amateur.
Back home in Sault Ste. Marie, celebrations await at Crimson Ridge Golf Club and the Up & Down Lounge, a golf simulator venue where he is a co-partner.
