FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Trailing only Colorado State entering the final day of the Ram Masters Invitational, Long Beach State was the only team under par in the final round to take the top spot and claim the tournament championship in their first action of the season.
Final Results
Senior Alejandro de Castro Piera had a monster final day, picking up birdies on four of the last five holes to finish the day with a 6-under par 64, the best round of the field to climb into third place, his first podium finish of the year and his fourth career Top 5 finish. His final tally was 206, 4-under par with back-to-back rounds in the 60s to close the tournament.
“I’m so proud of the team!” said head coach Rob Murray. “This was a very hard setup and we had to grind all 54 holes to get it done. It was a great way to start the season. Alejandro played incredibly today and really led the team to victory in style.”
Junior Krishnav Chopraa eagled Hole One as Long Beach State’s control of the 575-yard opener continued for the second day, helping him close the tournament with a 70 and climb into a tie for 12th place overall with a two-over 212. That tournament finish was matched by senior Jack Cantlay, who also closed the tournament with a 212 after a strong day on Thursday, showing the team’s strength with a Top 15 finish even with the day’s drop score.
One stroke behind that pair for the tournament was Jaden Huggins, who finished the tournament tied for 14th at three-over par, while Norwin Gohm’s final day 72 helped the Beach clinch their win.
Also impressing was individual Steen Zeman, as the graduate playing as an individual joined de Castro in the Top 5, one stroke back of the senior with a tournament score of 207 after a final round 70 in a tie for fourth place.
Long Beach State will be back in action in a week, participating in the William Tucker Intercollegiate hosted by New Mexico on September 19 and 20.
