Golf tournaments can often cause surprises.

Just take the 2025 Westmoreland County Coaches’ Association tournament Thursday at the Latrobe Elks Golf Course.

The winner of the annual event, Latrobe senior Parker Berk, surprised himself by taking the crown with a 1-under-par 71 and edging the 2024 champion, Kiski Area senior Max Mottura, who shot an even-par 72.

Berk used an eagle on the par-5 18th hole to pull out the win. He also had birdies on Nos. 4, 6 and 8.

“I had no idea that I would shoot well,” said Berk who plays No. 3 for the Wildcats. “It feels good to be a county champion. I am going to go home and celebrate. I just do not know how.”

Berk said the season has gone well. The Wildcats are undefeated, and his goal is to make states.

“I made WPIALs when I was a sophomore,” Berk said. “The eagle on No. 18 was why I won. I hit a drive over the bunker and had 165 yards in. I hit a pitching wedge to 10 feet below the cup.”

Mottura had a tough time on the greens. He had a four-putt for bogey on No. 4. He also had three three-putt holes.

He also had birdies on Nos. 3, 5, 11 and 15.

“It was a crazy round,” Mottura said. “I putted for eagle and had four putts. I was not happy. The course was playing hard, firm, fast.”

Mottura helped Kiski Area to its second consecutive team title with a 389 score, one shot better than Latrobe. Norwin edged Franklin Regional for third place, 396 to 398.

“If I did not win the individual title, winning the team title eased the pain,” Mottura said. “I was happy the young guys had fun.”

The other members of the Kiski Area team were sophomore Brady Jankowski, freshman Mike Ogden, senior Owen Konieczny, sophomore Gabe Thimons and junior Zach Hald.

Belle Vernon senior Jordan Mocello was third with an even-par 72.

Ties were by a scorecard playoff.

Latrobe senior Jack Sacriponte was fourth with a 73, Norwin junior Riley Shaffer fifth with a 73 and Jankowski sixth with a 73.

Franklin Regional senior Dylan Mauser took seventh with a 74, Greensburg Salem sophomore Luke Sikora finished eighth with a 74 and Penn-Trafford senior Jake Lenart was ninth with a 74. The final medalist was Franklin Regional senior Colin Holt.

Sikora and Mottura had the low scores in 2024, but Mottura won on a scorecard playoff.

Sikora, who has carded three holes-in-one in five months, helped Greensburg Salem win the Class 2A title.

The Golden Lions finished with a score of 415, 15 better than Ligonier Valley. Greensburg Central Catholic was third with a 438.

The other Golden Lions were junior Bryce Ferace, junior Sam Vassar, sophomore Hayden Henry, senior Justice Castaneda-Payne and sophomore Nathan Ross.
