It was a frustrating day for Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on Friday.

The Irish duo played together for the second day running, with both men starting the day in a strong position.

Ultimately, however, both men would finish the day well back from pace-setters Viktor Hovland, Hideki Matsuyama and Ludvig Aberg, after difficult days.

Lowry, in particular, grew frustrated as the round progressed, and his outburst at the 15th was one of many that required an apology from the Sky Sports commentators across the day.

Shane Lowry outburst caught on hot mic at Wentworth

One of Friday’s liveliest groups saw Tyrrell Hatton, Robert MacIntyre, and Ryan Fox tee off at 8:35am.

Hatton has something of a reputation as an easily frustrated player, and that shone through when he struck his own bag with a club after hitting a tree at close range early in his round.

MacIntyre could later be heard shouting “THAT’S THE ONE PLACE YOU CANNOT FUCKING HIT IT!” after miscalculating his approach to the green.

Soon, all three men were routinely swearing throughout their rounds, leading the Sky Sports commentators to humorously start taking turns apologising for the foul-mouthed antics.

There was an unexpected addition to this trio when Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy’s group approached the 15th.

Lowry overhit his approach to the green, with the ball trickling off the far edge and back into rough terrain.

The mics would then pick up the Offaly man shouting, “I mean, you are fucking joking!”

After all of the swearing from the Hatton-MacIntyre-Fox group had the Sky commentators weary by this stage, and they would come up with a brilliant response:

Sorry to hear that. We weren’t joking!

It is not the first time this year that Shane Lowry has been caught swearing on a hot mic, with similar incidents at three of the year’s four majors.

Lowry would finish the day with a two-over-par 74, to leave him tied with Rory McIlroy on -3, nine shots back from the leader Hideki Matsuyama.

McIlroy hit five birdies, three bogeys, and a double bogey, to finish with a frustrating level-par 72.

Both men are through to the weekend but are effectively out of contention at a tournament they have both won before.
