Franchesco Molinari is set to play a key role in Europe’s RDER Cup defense later this month, returning as one of Luke Donald’s vice captains. With a showdown at Beth Paige Black looming, Molinari and the European squad have already been working behind the scenes to prepare for what is expected to be one of the most hostile atmospheres in Ryder Cup history. The American crowd is sure to be in full voice as Keegan Bradley leads Team USA on home soil and Europe know they will face an uphill battle. An away rider cup is always one of golf’s toughest challenges, but Molinari insists this year’s team are doing everything possible to be ready for the pressure and the noise. Speaking at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, where 11 of the 12 European players are competing alongside Donald and his assistants, Molinari explained just how seriously the team is taking crowd preparation. We are very aware, Molinari told Bunker to CO. It has been one of the main points of the preparation. We’ve even been talking to people outside of golf to see how they manage crowds and other sports, but it’s an experienced team. We all know what’s waiting for us, and we need to show up and perform. Molinari knows better than most how to succeed in enemy territory. He was part of Europe’s unforgettable miracle at Medina in 2012, the only time in the past nine Rder Cups that the Away side has triumphed. Donald, Rory Mroy, and Justin Rose were also part of that famous comeback with Jose Maria Olazabel captaining the side. Remarkably, all four men are reunited again this year with a Lazabal back as an assistant and the others leading from within the team room. Luke was there, Justin was there, Rory was there, Molinari reflected. We’ve got a core group from Adena plus Olabel bringing his experience. That definitely helps. Even for those who have played in the US without winning, it means we know what to expect. Eural arrive in New York without home advantage. But they have other weapons at their disposal. One of the biggest is Molinari’s older brother, Eduardo, who has quietly become Donald’s secret weapon thanks to his cuttingedge work in golf data and analytics. Combining his statistical expertise with his playing experience, Eduardo has helped shape much of the team strategy. For Francesco, working alongside his brother again has been another highlight in their long shared journey in golf. It’s a pleasure and an honor to do the job with the team, especially with my brother. He said, “It’s definitely special. We were lucky to play our first Rder Cup together, and who would have thought back then that we’d be here now.” While Eduardo crunches the numbers, Francesco admits his own contribution lies elsewhere. “I think we are quite complimentary,” he joked. I’m not good with numbers. I try to bring something different. With experience, strategy, and family ties running deep within Europe’s camp, Molinari is confident they have the tools to take on the Beth Page black challenge head-on and defend the crown they claimed so convincingly at Marco Simone in 2023.
