too many golfers over complicate the down swing move and have this tendency of starting the down swing from the upper body where we get this very much so lateral movement taking place causing this club to go very much so over the top and then last minute we end up leaning back away from the golf ball and as you can imagine it makes it very difficult for the strike the direction the distance you name it which is why in today’s video I’m going to be showing you a very simple move the only move you need to get this downwing starting from the lower body so for those of you who are new welcome my name is Harry PJ golf professional here to help you transform your game no matter where you are in the world so make sure you hit the Subscribe button and drop those comments down below the tips or drills video topic you’d like me to cover in a future video now the downwing move a lot of golfers over complicate this move way too much by trying to watch the club in the downwing here making sure the golf clubs getting in the correct positions but as we’re doing this here we’re already thinking about two or three things just to take place during this down swing move and make contact with that golf ball and how long does a downswing take well it takes half a second so imagine going from practicing these moves here watching where the golf club goes doing let’s just say 5% 10% of your normal swing speed but then going straight into hitting full shots doing this having to look at the golf ball and going at 70 mph maybe 60 70 M hour well that’s going to be very difficult for us to time it’s going to be very difficult for us to try and get the club into certain positions in the down swing when we shouldn’t be having to do this and when we do this and we look at the club we get very tense and this is one of the most common mistakes I see a lot of golfers do especially at the driving range they look at the club get very tense really make sure they get into certain positions and it doesn’t work it makes it so difficult to make solid contact with that golf ball even if we’re in the right positions and get that distance accuracy that we’re looking for now a lot of golfers have to think about this move here to try and make sure they’re getting the club into certain positions two or three things just because they’re recovering from something taking place in the back swing phase usually I tend to see golfers with the takeaway move and back swing bring the club too far on the plane like this here so when we get to the top of the swing from this position here the first move to initiate this down swing will always come from the upper body so when it comes from the upper body we’re doing this because we’re trying to push the club back out in front of us to get the club back on playe when this usually cause us to get over the top and then it makes it very difficult to get that strike we get a bit too steep onto the golf ball and that’s when we end up leaning back to try and hit a little bit more up on the golf ball as opposed to getting too much of this chopping motion to take place now obviously we don’t want to be hitting up on the golf ball with the irons but we’re just trying to lean back into time just to help with that strike coming from this angle here makes it very difficult to get that strike to take place naturally so to begin with what you’re going to do is set up in this address position like this here with the trail hand the only hand gripping onto the golf club in the middle of the shaft like this here with the actual Club itself paralleled to the ground and what’s going to happen is the only two moves that you need to think about to take the club to the top of the back swing here is we’re going to get this bicep curl motion t taking place with the trail arm here getting this motion to take place as we’re getting our back to face towards the Target now just to Simply start this move get that back working towards the target just allow this arm just to follow and then we’re going to fold it up and do the bicep curl you can see here this sets me up in a great top of the back swing position so I want you just to repeat this a couple of times back and forth bringing it up to the top bringing it back down down just like so looking at the golf ball as opposed to looking where the the actual golf club is and what you haven’t noticed there from me doing this movement a couple of times and if you’ve done this yourself whilst watching this is that you’re bringing the club back down on this lovely plane we’re taking the club back to the top and we’re bringing it back down on a lovely more shallower plane which is what we want so straight away just from you doing this drill where we’re just folding holding the right arm up to the top of the swing and getting your back the feeling of the back is facing towards the target it’s allowing you to set the club in a great back swing position but also just naturally without thinking about where the club is looking at the golf ball it’s allowing you to get the club to travel back down on this lovely Arc as opposed to pushing out like so so just doing that move alone is going to allow you to get this club into this great position and then bringing it back down and nice natural plane whilst looking at that golf B it’s going to make things so much easier for you but how can we make sure that the lower body is initiating this downswing phase is starting this downswing for our golf swing and we’re going to be introducing one little move that you’re going to do right in between these two steps taking the club back and down but just before we do that I’d like to introduce my new sponsor to the channel GX golf if you’re sick and tired of spending too much on premium golf gloves or go out and play rounds of golf where the gloves rip after a couple of rounds whilst you’re playing then I would definitely consider checking out GX golf as they provide High premium quality Ceta golf gloves for a fraction of the price on the market by using this discount code below Harry 10 you can also save yourself a whopping 10% off so I’d highly recommend checking them out now to get this lower body starting and initiating this down sing move we’re going to be taking the club back where we were we’re going to to swing up to the top just like we’ve been doing and we’re going to stop at the top of the swing and I want you to think about ground reaction forces for a second if you don’t want to what they are that’s fine all you need to know is this for every force acting on a stationary object there is always there always going to be an equal and opposite reaction and force coming back off it so in this instance here the more pressure we can put into the ground the more power more Force natural force is going to take place now we’ve got this club set in this lovely position bringing it back down naturally we’ve got to make sure that this lower body is initiating this power initiating that downswing phase to take place starting that downswing so all I’m going to get you to do is once you get to the top of the swing just doing this drill here bringing the club up to the top and all we’re thinking there is back to Target falling the right arm the trail arm to the top of the Swing is we’re just going to bring in a tiny little squat like this here so we’re pressing down into the ground I’m not not turning whatsoever to begin this down swing I’m just simply getting up to the top and then squatting down a little bit like so pressing like this here so what this is doing is this is creating more pressure into the ground and this is how we’re going to get the ground reaction force is working more and getting that lower body to start we’ve triggered that lower body to start the down swing and now all we need to do from here is push back up as we bring the club back down but the club we don’t necessarily need to think about this we’ve got the club set in this position here and you knew from watching those swings before that the club’s going to natur come back down on that plane so we don’t need to worry about this all we need to focus on now is once you up to the top we’re squatting down to initiate that down swing phase and we’re pushing back up and through to Target and you could see there I’ve gone from getting my back to Target and then getting this chest to work towards the target so it’s one two three and that’s all you’re going to need to do this one move is going to make the down swing so much easier and starting from that lower body and once you’ve done a couple of more drill swings doing this using this one move you can start to implement this into full swings taking the club as normal and all you’re thinking about in that back swing is getting that back to face towards the Target and folding that trail arm into position then we’re going to get this little squat to take place and then we’re going to push back up and through like so now this isn’t going to work unless you allow the upper body the arms and the shoulders to stay nice and relaxed just let them do whatever they want don’t worry about where the positions are in the down swing the down swing is all one motion so why should we worry about setting the club in positions we’ve already done that just from doing this motion here with that move so what you need to do from here is just get the club to the top relax the arms and shoulders back to Target fold the right arm press down and then push back up and you could see there how much more effortless how easy that looked and we were initiating that downswing starting that downswing from the lower body once you’ve done a couple of rehearsals doing this in steps which i’ highly recommend you’re doing at least 10 to 20 you can then bring this into full swings we’re just going up to the top squatting down and pushing through but do this at 10% of your normal swing speed what you would normally swing at to hit a golf ball so I’ve got an A Time here as well just to start off with so I’d recommend a high lofted club to begin with as well so we’re just swinging up to the top nice and slow allow this Mo motion here to take place and then we’re going to push up and through so folding that right arm the trail arm back to Target like so press and push back up and through dead slow you can go even slower than that just to make sure you get this timing correct and remember when we get to the top here all we’re doing is pressing into the ground just to begin with I’ve not turned my shoulders like this here because when we turn those shoulders and try and get the hip to move usually the shoulders follow so the club’s going to come back out in front of us and get over the top again very steep on the golf ball so just make sure that you doing this in stages so you’re doing this all in one motion nice and slow so you is still getting that little squat so get that press and then push up and through and then you can start to build this up into those full swings 10% then go to 20% 30% all the way up to the full normal swing speed that you would use on the golf course so make sure you go ahead and give us a try if you’ve come this far highly recommend subscribing to the channel so you stay tuned to all the latest and greatest content coming to you every Tuesday and Friday if you’d like to learn a little bit more about this downswing move that I’ve introduced to you today you can click this video here subscribe buttons there oh and I completely forgot we’ll see you in the next video

  1. Hi Harry great video at the top do you recommend straightening the right arm to keep the left arm straight or should I keep the right elbow pointing to the ground with full wedge of the right hand thanks for your help kindly advise Jack

  2. Hi Harry thanks for your prompt reply I'm going to keep the right arm flexed as a top in the backswing and rely on my rotation of the upper body in the backswing to keep the left arm straight any comment on keeping the hinge of the right hand through impact thanks for your help kindly advise Jack

  3. I am on the right track with the squat, to me it feels as if it is happening about 75% of backswing. Have had wonderful ranges session with this technique but does not translate under pressure in match play. To many old habits come back I suppose but on the right track.

  4. So does it mean one has to stand slightly taller in backswing to execute the little squat move ? Just feels to rotate to top of swing , to then execute that move, it’s difficult in the sequence as it’s no time to do. For me anyway. But if standing slightly taller, it’s easy to perform it.

  5. Wow.. Not only did u simplify the downswing, but you made the entire swing very easy to do. without overthinking it.

  6. I think half my trouble is being too tense and solid in my stance so maybe this will loosen me up a bit. I've made improvements but biggest issue right now is throwing my right hip out, so I hit out right. Is this bump likely to help me with that?

  7. Great lesson and explanations. However, I've been seeing people recommend starting to drop the arms during the forward shift, before starting the body rotation to help shallow the club/get the inside out path and keep the arms and hands in front and not lagging. What do you think about this thought/timing on starting the downswing before the "unrotation" of the body.

  8. Wow. Just found this video and followed. I always tried to push down on the lead foot (after recentering). Always topped it. This move has been magic for me. Keeps my upper body delayed instead of flying open. I just pressure down a little, and the rotation just happens. A ton of speed, also. Thank you, Harry. I've never seen another instructor teach this move.

  9. Great Video… I found that as the club is going back start the downswing…. Being trying that move for a few rounds…getting better stike with my irons… Appreciate your Video… Thanks

  10. Harry, I noticed when I do squat to start the downswing, the arms naturally fall into the correct position. Is this what you have found for most of your students??? Thanks

  11. This is the best golf lesson I have had. Shaved 10 strokes off my average sore today, Thanks Harry!

  12. I noticed you tap your toes just about every time you start the swing and than something with your back foot as well? What is this motion or technique

  13. After the squat move you say push and then up. Do you mean push from the right foot and then push up from the left foot (post)? Or just push up from the left foot?

  14. I told myself, "Don't watch another YouTube golf tip video. It will screw up your swing." Now I don't need to watch another YouTube video, because this tip fixes the transition, the bane of a hundred thousand golfers.

  15. This move fixed so many flaws in my swing. For the first time in my life the swing feels effortless. I am able to have nice high hands and “moving down” to initiate the downswing naturally shallows the club nicely into the slot.

  16. Well done. The less thoughts in my noggin, the smoother the transition. It becomes much more difficult when there are 5-10 swing thoughts as your getting ready to swing. This simple drill takes out a lot of guesswork. Thank you from across the pond
